No idea why we have spent all summer chasing someone who doesn't want to sign when Neves, Sangare and Tielemens are all just sitting there.
Or people might prefer we identified and lined up targets in good time to get business done earlier in the window with work behind the seasons to understand the viability of transfers happening before the summer. You know like a well run club

Looking at past form, especially when we were utter dross for much of last season is a bit pointless. We have a new manager and some new players and its the start of the season. Have some faith.

At the start of the window you weren't sat thinking only Frenkie can improve us. Just because that's where we are people now feel the need to spin that as the reality.
What would you prefer, getting a player that will improve you somewhat but will want replacing again in a year or 2 years time or going for someone who should be with the club for a decade and improve you massively.
Improving your squad by a little amount while spending a lot of money each season is silly. There are loads of players that would improve us but many of them would cost a lot of money and only improve us a tiny bit. The overlap of players that would improve us a lot, not cost the earth, are available and willing to come to United is quite small despite what people like to suggest.
People seem to forget all the players that United "should have signed" that go elsewhere for big fees and do feck all when they get there. All the clubs people fawn over doing "great" business are gambling on players. Sometimes they come good, most of the time they don't but our fans forget about that and move onto the next window and make eyes at other "great buys" that are still just gambles.
Everyone will just be complaining that we didn't get Frenkie if we signed Sangare and hes crap. Everyone will be complaining if we pay £60m for Neves and hes barely an upgrade on what we have.
Did you watch the second half against Villa and the Athletico game. We have improved in our application and work rate but we still look very ordinary going forward without Sancho/Martial/Rashford showing up. After that…we have nothing. Ronaldo/Elanga/Amad/Pellistri cannot step into the gaps left by that front 3 and if we lose one (Martial) the attacking dynamic changes.
I would not be surprised if we drew both those games. Your optimism is misplaced based on everything we have seen to date. If Martial is fit and that front 3 plays…we should get over the line.
Hypothetically, it could make sense to not rush signings through for the sake of getting bodies in, when realistically the aim for this season is to 1) Get Champions League football and 2) develop players from the acadamy and first team into players that suit EtH philosophy. Getting Champions League should be easily achieveable with this squad if theres even a tiny bit of team cohesion, especially if Ronaldo stays. So whether we get Frenkie in today or the last day of the season shouldn't make or break our season. Even though it makes us look weak i would rather we do things right.
That all said, if an extra £10m would have pushed this deal through to pay the deffered wages Frenkie is owed then i think at this point i would have accepted that.

Look, we should beat Brighton and Brentford given our players and a much better coach than last season. But we will be going into these games with mostly the same team as last season and no matter how much good work has been done on the training ground if we go a goal down the confidence will be fragile.
Holding up a pre-season match where we put four past Liverpool (with an extra week's training) is daft. It's not indicative of anything and even if it was our pre-season results got worse as it went on.
All that being said I'm confident of beating Brighton on Sunday given we are at home and there will be positive energy for ETH's first game. Brentford away will be tricky though.
The only thing I find baffling is that if we really have agreed a fee, then they've known exactly how much transfer budget is left for other positions for quite a while now. Why haven't they moved for at least one attacking player in this time. It suggests actually that there is no other money available beyond the De Jong money.
Yer our midfield did struggle last year, but I feel with ETH's system this will help! Not sure our starting midfield has got weaker, it's the same and then add Erikson/VdB on the bench, instead of Mata and Matic, I think we have got slightly better! (Pogba could be a contentious issue here!)

Well if you believe reports that we agreed a fee for FDJ, then you believe that we've bid for Sesko recently.
This is absolutely true. An extra £5-10m or whatever would probably have been worth it for squad cohesion, allowing FDJ to find a house and move his family, and allowing the fans the optimism ahead of the season. Instead, we now have nothing but negative media and no matter what we do now; whether its signing FDJ or an alternative it will look like we wasted time or panic bought.
All those who want instant success, there are a lot state funded clubs to support - maybe Manchester United isn't your favorite club and you just support success, not the club nor it's players.

Are you really comparing results in a competitive league game during the season. To a random pre season friendly which didn't even include first 11s etc?
To be fair, they did include first XIs, they just didn't include them in the same halves.
I did find it pretty interesting that their first XI couldn't score past our backup squad though, definitely a little satisfaction in it even if it means nothing in the actual season.
Regardless of the pre-season, though, I do agree that our side should be beating Brighton. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being melodramatic.

Luckhurst doing a running total of time spent on FdJ is one of the more annoying things about this whole saga and that says a lot. Started with weeks and now days. He will be on to billable hours next.

I'm pretty certain that I've seen enough from good sources like Mitten, Ornstein and Whitwell to convince me there is a deal agreed between the clubs. If you want to quesiton the value of that if the player is not keen, then that's fair. Go listen to the last 10 minutes of this weeks 'talk of the devils' podcast to hear Andy Mitten talking in pretty positive terms of the deal still. He says it's probably 50% he comes to united, but he also says, don't rule United out, they wouldn't have gone this far if they didn't believe he would consider joining United. He also explains why the Chelsea interest may not be quite as attractive to the player as it might initially seem.
There seems to be this idea that we should be happy that club is patiently focusing on specific targets and yet even Chelsea's scattergun approach this summer looks better than ours as they have actually recruited players that will be in their first 11 and potentially have two other defenders lined up that will walk into their first 11.
I mean personally I'm very much of the opinion that we must have assurances from the player to have been going at this for 83 days. So fingers crossed.

Yep, I'm comparing the result from a game from last season with a team that didn't care, didn't work for the manager and we're probably at the lowest point in quite a while vs a game that is completely meaningless because its pre-season.
The link is that neither result has any fecking impact on what will happen on Sunday. Neither has any more relevance than the other. The point was that making out that we should be worried because we lost 4-0 to them is silly.

Did Liverpool and City take the same approach when Klopp and Pep were appointed? That is the standard to judge us by. What this transfer window has shown is that our scouting and club structure is still a major work in progress. Most other clubs would have found alternative targets to fit the system, as there is a strong scouting and recruitment department in place. If rumours are to be believed, ten Hag tore up the recommendations from our scouts and is going off his own list. That isn’t progress and I would be very much concerned if this remains the process and structure next summer.
Klopp and Pep took a few years to get where they are now. United have wasted so much money over the years it set United back massively. It's the correct approach to be extra careful and not buy for the sake of buying.

This is an attitude I absolutely fail to understand given our recent recruitment history. We KNOW from experience that a scattergun, sign-for-signing's sake approach to recruitment doesn't work. Now you're praising Chelsea for Boelhy's Woodwardesque approach to running the club? Their signings may well work out, but there's no guarantee they will.
What I've wanted from United is recruitment of players that fit the way we want to play. Not too long ago folks were wanking themselves silly over signing Varane, Sancho, Ronaldo. Look how that turned out.
