I don't think its such a "breakthrough" because the price was already was summed up.

The only thing that got left for us to complete this deal is Frenkie vs Barca for his lost wages
It was previously reported that we had a “broad agreement” on the fixed fee with work still needed to be done about the structure of the add ons, so this new update seems significant because it sounds like total agreement has been reached.

Liverpool got £17m for Neco Williams with what 20 championship matches? Compared to Pereira's experience? Lord know how Liverpool do it tbh.

TBF, Neco Williams is at an age where many players still unable to break into the first team, especially at one of top performing team. Also he's the early stage of his career with much room for development. He's called up regularly for Wales NT. In another word, he's only got found out as not being good enough to be a squad player for Liverpool.

So what Liverpool doing is selling surplus young players at highest value before they're required to give more expensive wage bumper contract. They hold all the card in negotiation.

Pereira's so called experience is nothing to boast about. He was given chances because he came from out youth set up, but then stayed for too long he's got fully found out. He's not good enough for a squad role in this chaotic United. Not doing that well on loan to Lazio. He's at an age where you no longer sell with value expectation of earth shattering untapped potential. We're selling a journeyman.

Neco transfer is more comparable to Dan James sale, which we did well. I believe we did wonderfully selling Pereira at this fee and that 20% clause.

Further confirmation thanks to both @Adnan and @Berbaclass:

Typically, their newspaper articles are written by their more reliable journalists, so this is something to look forward to.

So...

1. There's video evidence of Arnold and Murtough meeting Barca executives for lunch in Barcelona.
2. Manchester United Sources are saying they spent all day there and came to a verbal agreement for £56m + addons.
3. Barcelona sources say we reached the agreement at lunchtime for £72m.

Everything above seems to corroborate each other.

Neither source says anything about sorting out De Jong's wages. But both imply the De Jong is open to the move. United have a deadline for Friday, whilst Barca are also in a hurry in order to move along other transfers that depend on cash inflow.

I think it's safe to say this is about 80% done. The final 20% is going to be tricky, but there seems motivation from all sides to reach competition. It's looking like the fee will be £56m + £16m addons. I'd expect it to be done if not this week, then early next week - assuming reports are reliable.

I tend to think the reports can be believed because we're getting two completely different angles from two completely different sources, each linked to a separate club.

Just like when you're trying to determine the historical accuracy of a war story, you'd be sceptical if it was just a single perspective saying it. But here, both sides seem to agree on all the same big points. This is about as certain as you can get in a situation like this.

I am last trying to remember a saga where 2 clubs have agreed and all that is left now is to persuade the player to leave. No - I can't :)

Yeah I thought United always launched bids after agreeing personal terms but wonder why that is not the case here.

De Jong wants to stay at Barcelona if at all possible. So his agent probably told United to sort out the business between clubs first, because his priority was never to leave unless forced out. But now we've done that, Barca are going to start showing there true colours and push him out the door.

This is what De Jong was waiting for but hoping never to see. Hence his initial hesitation to negotiate. But now he's got no choice.

Makes sense. Thanks!

This - everyone knew we were offloading Pereira and there weren't many takers so we can't really expect to get more than £10 million for him

That makes it even worse. I'd run in the opposite direction from a player like that.

Imagine marrying a woman who only said yes to you after she found out her lover who she was still in love with decided he was going to give his marriage another go. You'd be bonkers to shackle up with her.

Yes but if you are an average guy -. and she was a supermodel - would you really care ? :) And our midfield makes de Jong look like a supermodel

That has to be BS. Fair enough if it’s a player the manager has never worked with before but surely ETH and De Jong are on close enough terms that a clear yes or no would be given to save all sides a lot of time.

Could understand if he said his preference was to try succeed at Barcelona but would be open to United but There’s no way we’re still chasing him after this long if he has no intention of joining.

Serious Di Maria vibes. He's just not that into us

Absolute bollocks.

It costs a fortune just to negotiate these sorts of deals. Then you have the wasted time in the transfer window, the eventual embarrassment and hit to the club’s image when the player rejects after a bid is accepted.

No club is going to negotiate for a player without first knowing that the player is open to moving to them.

Yep, I think there’s a lot of murky water around the whole “tapping up” situation.. so you never hear about things like that happening directly, but there’s no way United would even bother going this far into the process if at the end of it all he didn’t want to come.. the Spanish press are desperately trying to save face and protect Barcelona as you’d expect, but by the sounds of it, it’s a more a case of preference.. he’d like it’s stay, but isn’t going to reduce his salary to do so, which tells you everything you need to know really

Thanks to both @Zoo and @VanGaalEra in the Frenkie de Jong thread:

This is the first time we're reading a report from Barcelona that states an agreement between the two clubs. Oriol Domenech is also reliable for Barcelona news.

So they didn't ask FDJ first if he wanted to join United in the first place? I have a bad feeling about this, I am getting Di Maria vibes. I feel like FDJ and Barcelona are taking us for a ride. (Can't post media so removed tweets from quote)

Not sure what Barcelona have to gain by messing us about. They need the money from his sale, and the wages off the books, we know this much

I think the "Frenkie doesn't want to leave Barca" perspective is being driven by the Barca PR machine - playing the angle that the player doesn't want to leave. Its clearly obvious they are having to sell due to the financials of his contract and the clubs dire financial position. When in fact, United have probably been given the green light from the players agent and the club to negotiate a while ago.

His first interview at United will be a real doozy.
"First off, f*ck Laporte and the club you claim
Manchester when we ride come equipped with game
You claim to be a president but you hid my wage
We bust on Barça broke boys are cheapskates"

Come on guys, have some common sense. We wouldn't be negotiating this long for a player who hasn't agreed to come to United. The hold up is between Frenkie and Barca. They need to work out how much he will accept of the deferred wages to leave. There is a lot of money on the line here for player and club. Frenkie holds 90% of the power and should bend them over.

Brilliant.

Can always appreciate a Tupac fan.

Didn’t we say the same about Pogba 6 years ago, until he plays in the PL and proves he can play week in week out and produce a 7 or 8 out of 10 every week, we simply don’t know.

A better hypothesis would be in this media infested world of you tube clips which makes every Dutch player to be the new Johan Cruyff, cosmetic surgery and make up have never been so good, it is possible to make a bang average bird now look like a super model, with some cutting edge max factor and a decent nip n tuck surgeon on Harley street!

Pogba has a mentality issue, not a talent or ability issue. FdJ by all accounts doesn't have an ego like Pogba and is used to being part of a system that demands the player put the team above themselves. Pogba played for himself.

Pogbas problem wasnt that he looked like a supermodel
Pogbas problem was that he behaved like a supermodel

Keep seeing the same posts along the lines of "Doesn't want to leave Barca, do not want" or whatever. He doesn't have much choice if they want to sell. Should he just retire then? If all clubs had the same attitude there'd be a lot of players in limbo. I'd love to play for United but if they didn't want me and another team offered me a load of money a week I'd be alright with that!

Great reply however on a serious note I’m not a fan of £60M£100M signings I can’t remember the last one to be a success

Let’s go down the list of 15 of the hugest value in PL

1. Jack Grealish £100M - Flop
2. Romelu Lukaku £96M - Flop
3. Pogba - 93M - Flop
4. H Maguire - 80M Flop
5. R Lukaku - 77M not as bad as people thought but stil a Flip
6. VVD 75M - Huge Hit
7. J Sancho 73M - Jury’s out
8. K Havertz 72M - Hit
9. N Pepe 71M - Flop
10. K Arrizabalaga - 71M Flop
11. KDB - 68M - Huge Hit
12. Allison - 67M -Huge Hit
13. Darwin Nunez - 64M + add ons
14. A DiMaria - 63M - Flop
15. T N Dombele - 62M Flop

Doesn’t look good now does it ?

What’s scarier is that united have 5 out of 15 without a bonafide hit it yet, like Arnold said we’ve wasted a billion pounds, yes it looks a lot better at the £45-60M market range with some huge success like Bruno, R Mahrez, B Silva, M Salah, R Dias, Sterling, Cancello, L Dias but even Liverpool spent £55M on N Keita.

So we get a player who doesn’t want to be here, never played in the PL will cost £70M because we are probably paying his £13M wages owed by Barcelona and he doesn’t even get double digits in goals and assists whats not to love about this transfer ?

Apart from maybe we are paying £20M over the top again for an unproven PL fooballer who will fill these pages next season with the Heading .”FDJ he’s not all that, Glaziers Out !”

12 T N Dombe - 59M Flop

Think you are being more than a bit harsh here....Grealish hasn't been a flop - just not a hit. Maguire was awful last season, but he had 2 good seasons before that. Overpriced but not a flop.

But you also forgot De Bruyne, Mahrez, Dias to name some

Post wasn’t finished have another look 5/15 are a hit which is a 1 in 3 chance

Agreed but Lukaku was really poor in both his big moves.

Take that one game against PSG away and there was nothing notable about his United career

not sure we can really say Havertz has been a hit can we either?

Allison a hit and didnt he cost 70m?

I'd give Grealish another year before calling him a flop, though while I wouldn't call him a flop as he's still young, Havertz hasn't been a hit, even if he scored in the CL final.

He doesn't have much choice if they want to sell.

You can't sell a player who doesn't want to leave. FdJ can 100% refuse to leave and sit there either playing or not for the rest of his contract. Either way, Barca would be on the hook for his wages. Thats why Barca are in such a bad position. They need to incentivise FdJ to leave and the only way they are going to do that is to pay him a large chunk of the wages he deferred for 2 years.
