True I think CB and DM were always more important which is why the decision to hand Matic a three year deal was baffling. With Rashford, Martial and Bruno we already have enough goal threat in forward areas which means that the teenagers we have can rotate in and out plus Mata is still a viable option in certain games.

For me the priority should have been a DM who is good on and off the ball and also quick across the ground who would provide us with the solidity to play Pogba as the Box to Box CM in a 4-2-3-1. A physically imposing CB would have helped too.

I am not too fussed with missing out on Sancho because I think Greenwood and/or Diallo could be at the level he is right now in 12 to 24 months. What is galling is that not only have we missed out on him but we haven't done anything to address the central defensive issues we have in midfield and at the heart of defense.
Agreed.

I'm just dissapointed we didn't sign either a DM or CB because signing at least one would've seen us make steps towards closing the gap. Hopefully we can bring in a DM in January if possible.

Agree. I believe DM is now the most important position to strengthen.

To be brutally honest whenever I've seen Garner he doesn't strike me as anything special - hope he proves me wrong but I believe a top level DM is a key piece to making us more competitive.

I'm not as negative about this squad as many are, I think we have a talented squad, DM I believe is key for our progress though. The difference in our performances when Matic is in form compared to when he's off the pace are night and day.

Very detailed story. Not pretty from a United perspective

I would disagree. It's clear the club wants bring some order in the spending departement.
Just because Dortmund are overpricing their assets doesn't mean that we should be gloomy about it.
What's disappointing is he won't come in the next two windows either.
I guess giving Cavani #7 is a subtle notice about that.

Yeah, a player has never been stripped his number.

We need a DM who can control zones in the defensive phase, high up the pitch IMO. Someone who is athetically and physically gifted , 'a containment specialist'. We currently don't have a single player who could do that which would allow us to play a more expansive game. I'm hoping we can bring in a DM in January and in the summer target Konate or Upamecano for the CB role which would then give our attack minded players the foundation to sustain attacks. And then I believe we will be close to challenging for the league with maybe one more addition to come.

Saúl would be my pick.

Yeah totally agree. I know it seems like we are miles away from the top two in the league but a player like this in midfield and the right CB can transform our approach in games and take us to the next level.

I would argue that our midfield architecture just isn't right imo, Matic and Pogba in a midfield two are a no go in this era of high energy football. We will always get overrun with that pairing whilst Fred and McT look the part but they don't have enough on the ball and will leave Bruno with too much to do creatively.

A proper DM plus Saul would be my suggestion but that's likely to cost us north of £100m surely. The only way we can do that is if Tuanzebe comes good and nullifies the need for a CB signing or if some club pays us over £50m for Pogba.

I completely agree and have said so a number of times in different threads. Pogba for me has to be removed from the double pivot and I would play VdB and either Fred or McTominay instead to give us solidity and balance.

Andy Mitten reported on Diallo and Pellistri over a month ago. But in fairness to Brown he's been on the ball too. I know a lot of posters don't like him because he's not averse to criticising the club. He's certainly not a bullshitter however.

Luckhurst, Braun and Mitten all seem to have similar sources within the club. They all were in unison saying we hadn’t signed the kid from Belgrade. It’d be interesting to know who that source is because as you’ve alluded to none of them are fans of the owners/board.

So it took them till deadline day to work that out
We spent very little, we never intended to spend much in this window its quite clear.
They should have just been upfront about that from the beginning and ended all speculation around Sancho

Club briefing ahoy

I didnt know the premier took a levy on tranafer fees

But €230m would’ve been okay obviously... I don’t think his wages and the agent fee would’ve been much lower if Dortmund had accepted the €100m bid.

Briefing time from the club to excuse their failures, instead making them look incredibly stupid since it means they realised the cost of the transfer like two days after a huge bid.

They worked it out months ago, hence why the bid wasn't made months ago.

Isnt this common sense? Thats eye watering for the best of times never mind during a pandemic.
As a fanbase we have to be really careful about dismissing stories like these. We need to get our side out, its obviously not a case of an extra few mill up front
We arent always the bad guys

It will be dismissed by some anyway. Maybe they thought they could get the agents fee/Dortmund price lowered down to the last minute. I'd agree they shouldn't have bothered wasting their time if that was the case. We've been hearing about the agent fee issue all summer though so why anyone would act like this is a surprise is beyond me.

These calculations don't make months to work out it's going to be very expensive. If you can't afford something you're just wasting your time chasing it.

That s the most irritating issue. If he was so expensive (and I fully agree that he was ) we should have been and offer and moved on.

On the reports of 250 Million Financial Package for Sancho:

130 Million for Wages and Agent Fees?

Over a 5 year contract the salary comes to 500k/ Week.

If 30 Million of that is Agent's Fees then it's still 385k/ week.

320k/ week if the contract's length is 6 years.

I have a feeling that United was ready to pay the 120 Million to Dortmund. And also willing to pay Sancho ~300k/ Week. The point of contention was probably which club paid the Agent's Fees.

£72m in transfer fees only is not spending very little by any account. If you add agent fees I'm pretty sure the amount is close to £100m and that's without the potential add ons. Can you tell me how many clubs spent more than that? I have a feeling Manchester United is one again in the top 5 for overall spend this summer.

Yup and this is exactly why we’ll end up signing Sancho over the next two windows :wenger:
A CB and a DM will be an after thought.

We kind of did move on. It was only Twitter and the red-tops keeping the story on life-support.

Our interest in Diallo was brought to everyones attention last year via Sport Witness. The difference in this case is Brown went a step further and insisted that we were gonna sign him.

We can negotiate though? I honestly dont think we were in for other wide forwards, Mason obviously has that position now. An opportunity with Dembele arose but that was fecked off with his contract standoff with Barca and even then it was a loan.
Theres a narrative going around that we were left short without Sancho but I dont think we were ever going to sign anybody but Sancho. Especially with Traore on the way.

What a crock of shit, if they'd calculated this then why not switch to another target 2 months ago instead of scrambling for an injury prone Dembele on loan in the last 24 hours? just more excuses, i bet the motherfecker's still take their dividends regardless of the coronavirus.

You’d think that would’ve been briefed at the time if it were true. And if the club had decided that they weren’t going for him, why did Ole reportedly keep in touch with Sancho?

Also, didn’t we submit a bid worth €110m last week?

We kind of did move on. It was only Twitter and the red-tops keeping the story on life-support.
I m convinced there was some type of indications from the club which encouraged the idea that a deal was possible.

Mind you, the fact that we moved on is a good thing. Sancho imo is over rated. The bad thing is that we didn't have a ready made alternative, though the figures for players like Sarr are unreal - 45m.
Re Dembele I think we got it right too. The risk was too big. Though we left it late , again.
