Relax, this is Summer 2006 repeating itself.

There's a gaping hole in our midfield with the departure of Herrera (Keane) and then we go and lose Lukaku (Ruud) without buying another striker. People are claiming we are much weaker than last season having spent next to nothing, and start bemoaning the Glazers. However, the return of Sanchez (Scholes) takes everyone by surprise, alongside the phenomenal performances of our youngsters, Martial (Rooney) and Rashford (Ronaldo). All the signings made in the year turn out to be huge successes, with Maguire (Vidic) and Wan Bissakka (Evra) getting into the team of the season. It's one of the most memorable seasons ever.

People need to calm down. :nervous:

I am so relieved now. Thank you Mr Offside.

Admire the optimism i really do.... Martial and Rashford are not a patch on what Rooney and Ronaldo were before 2006. Happy to be wrong on this though.

Ok final 10 minutes.

Is Messi in Manchester yet? Cutting it close...

Great signing for Arse IMO. David Luiz is pointless but Tierney I think will be quality.

Lovely post!

It's better to keep the money saved for Longstaff and Jason Sacho next year than to risk it on expensive risks, like Bruno Fernandes, Milikovic-Savic etc

Maybe just buy Longstaff and Sancho this year and save money when there price goes up next year

This made me happy

Well with how fecking awful Woodward is I would understand finishing behind City/Liverpool/Tottenham/Arsenal and maybe Wolves without blaming him entirely. I still think our squad is way better than Chelsea's though.

I said they used their young players in midfield specifically, I didn’t mention any other positions. Skipp was used sporadically but Winks was used quite a lot.

Which is my point, they were surrounded by players knowing each other, mostly experienced, and Winks was in his 3rd season, having played more than 50 games as a pro including European games and England caps. So it's just basically one young player (Skipp) making two starts at home vs random teams and getting 71 minutes for the whole season as a sub. Not really the same as if Skipp had played 15 or 20 games for them.

Winks and McTominay are the same age, before last season McTominay had played 23 games as a pro. Winks was just above 60 and had played 14 European games including Real Madrid, it's not like he came from nowhere at all and he was meant to be the cornerstone of their midfield given the people around. On the other hand, Man Utd lost Blind, Carrick, Fellaini and Herrera during the last 12 months with just Fred coming in. Mc Tominay will supposedly be a regular alongside Matic and Pogba, and behind him there is only Fred as a senior player so youngters will have to massively step up, especially Perreira who is now not a young kid anymore but a 23 year-old with 100 pro games. Behind him, Gomes just 3 pro games and Garner 1 need time to learn and improve. If Pogba leaves or one senior midfielder gets injured, this could be critical and I can't see the parallel with Tottenham.

Just seen Dybala walking around with a choc ice near Las Iguanas in the Trafford Centre.

What a week. Started with the possibilities of Dybala, Fernandes and/or Eriksen... ended with no one.

Did we sign anyone? 3 min left till deadline, was working so didn’t follow in the last hour

Do people genuinely think that rebuilding a whole team can be done in one transfer window? Maybe I give this place too much credit for being sane and rational

You obviously cannot replace an entire team in a single window (it wouldn't even be advisable to try) and, whatever we did this summer, we were never going to be title contenders this season.

However, 4 or 5 first team players should absolutely have been possible, particularly with a couple of high profile departures like Lukaku & Herrera.

Assuming they were of the requisite quality, that should have ensured that we closed the gap to Liverpool & City, and, at the very least, put us in a very strong position to achieve a 3rd place finish.

When we appointed Solskjaer in March, we heard it was to give him time to plan the "rebuild" (his words) in the summer.

That we have only managed to sign two first team starters and have been left scrabbling around in the last few days of the window desperately trying to get deals over the line, must be seen as something of a failure for this club, given what's at stake and who our manager is.

Transfer window: *closes*
Ed: So we've got til Monday 2nd September, that's right isn't it?
