 Panic button pressed. Same money would have landed him last year and fulfilled Mourinho's wishes and not had a season down the drain and Europa league finish.

Wonder why we didn't bid for koulibaly last summer before him signing a new contract.

I'm pretty sure that United interest was rumored at 65m-70m and Leicester weren't interested at all. So no, it wouldn't have landed him last year.

80 million on Maguire. He better be an absolutely top CB for that fee.

He's not. He's also very slow, which won't be an issue if we're looking to sit deep and counterattack like we did in the last few months of the season, but absolutely will be an issue if Solskjaer wants us to press high like we did in the early part of his time here.

Name them.

1. Malang Sarr - Nice
2. Dayot Upemacano - Leipzig
3. Moussa Niakhaté - Mainz
4. Nordi Mukiele - Lepizig
5. Ibrahim Konate - Leipzig
6. Ibrahim Sangaré - Toulouse
7 William Saliba - St Etienne
8. Stanley Nsoki - PSG
9. Boubakar Kamara - Marseille
10. Kelvin Almian - Toulouse

Seriously. Ligue 1/France/Leipizig has a ridiculous amount of talent and most, if not all, of these could be bought for less than Harry Maguire right now. I'm not saying each of these guys would immediately fit in the team and settle in England. But each of these guys has a higher ceiling than Maguire.

He is more like English Mats Hummels. Bayern were never defensively astute with him.

The bolded part is a bit of a problem considering what happened to Bailly and Rojo.
As for the higher ceiling? It's all guess work really. Us cafe experts said the same about Depay
And the names aren't as good as Magurie...

He's a DM, but I'm with you in principle.

We will lose out on all the top midfielders to rivals. Ndombele down for medical with spurs who also sign Caballos on loan.

Spurs getting Ndombele for 70m and us bidding 70m for Maguire and getting the bid rejected shows why we NEED to shop elsewhere, preferably in France where there are 10 central defenders better than Maguire we can get for less than 50m right fecking now.
If they were better than Maguire, they wouldn't be playing in France.

The fact that 70m was our opening bid means we're willing to pay more.
Should've opened the negotiations at a lower value and aim to conclude at 70m.
70m is already mad.... anything above that is prohibitive

At their ages they would. But I'm not sure that half of them have the potential to be as good as Maguire.

Agreed completely thats excluding people like Umtiti and Kimpembe who both are atleast as good or better than maguire and would cost less.

I won't start a debate here as this thread is for transfers - been caught out on that before by the mods - but my point is this - why not go for players with world-class potential, rather than players we know for sure are only ever going to be slightly above average. Look, Maguire isn't a bad player by any means. But he's not going to make the difference between us coming 5th and winning the league. That's what we should expect for that kind of fee. Right now, for 70m we should either get a standout, world-class, readymade central defender. Or go for one of the guys I've mentioned, who would cost half the price and have twice the potential.

And it has been rejected

Fair enough. Leicester don't need to sell. Not sure what we should do here. 70m is itself too high a price for Maguire. Doesn't make sense to go higher. The max we can do now is include a few more add-on clauses or else just move on to a new target.

He said better than Maguire. That's not true. If they were, they'd be at Paris or in England.

No, they wouldn't. It's actually rare for U20 defenders to leave France and PSG don't really shop in France. The ones that do leave go to germany before showing anything.

I'm not talking about potential. I'm talking about ready-made top class CBs. Didn't say Paris would buy them. They'd come through the youth ranks. If they reach a certain level, they leave.

Toby is available for £25m, I'd rather get him this summer and put more money into other areas. Hopefully, with Toby, Lindelof, Bailly and one of Smalling or Jones as 4th choice for this season that'd be enough until Axel comes back from a loan next season.

And my comment was about whether they would be in France and their potential/ceiling compared to Maguire, that's the two things that I mentioned. Also PSG don't have some sort of premium on youth players, most talented players aren't at PSG, so that claim is strange.

We need an experienced CB, not more potential. We need a leader, because we have not got one in this team. This is the one position we cannot mess up.
