Because we didn't sign James? I don't get it. This would have been exactly the kind of signing Woodward has been criticised for in the past. Yet us not signing a player we don't need and doesn't fit our manager's system is cause for despair.

You lot give muppets a bad name.

Yeah but on what planet is extending Mata for 3 more years rather than spending 40 mil on James a better idea?

Yes exactly, dont think too many would complain had we sold Mata to Napoli and replaced him with James.

Crazy good deal if true, 40m won’t get you Zaha nowadays.

I think the price reflects the player personally. He's got talent but hes not as good as people on here make out. Very inconsistent.

Bayern could have snapped him up on a reduced deal and chose to send him back.

Higher salary? Known quantity? Indications that Mata will stay with the club after his playing contract expires.

Indeed. Didn't the loan agreement have a sale clause of 40 million? People want us to emulate Bayern in transfers yet here we are.

Do we want players from failing United teams staying with the club after they finish their playing careers? Why?

As far as I see, he failed under 4 different managers, he failed to make an impact, he’s slower than he was, he’s not an effective sub, he’s a decent enough player but not in the current PL, just a waste really.

Is being good at recycling possession is enough? Cleverley could do that too.
It takes the lad a minute to close down a player ffs, and I know he tries but it’s not good enough.

The club obviously disagrees, though.

That much closer to paying up for Pogba. Llorente to Atletic seems likely and Isco will be the next objective, making Pogba feel like a free transfer for them. Then after July 1 they’ll see what they can do to unsettle Mbappe.

Just because someone is going to stay on at the club is no justification for forking out on him for 3 years. That is not good business sense. And I can't see how Napoli would pay more than United. James is a known quantity and has been no worse than loads of other big name players even at United at the moment.

This was the no brainer of all no brainers. The Mata deal is just dead money especially when we are supposed to be at a crossroads and needing a fresh injection throughout the squad.

The club knows more than we do.

Mata is technically very good, he'd be an asset as a coach at any level.

James seems to have been coasting on one good tournament five years ago. I'm happier with Mata in the squad, the devil you know, etc.

Say what you will about the sheikhs, but Madrid is the only club who’s capable of signing players like Pogba and Mbappe in one summer, and they’ve done it before.

I also haven't mentioned the fact that the team what sold James wants one of our players. If you're going to talk about good business sense, you don't try to make deals under those conditions.

What worries me is that I’m not sure they do at this point, and whether the footballing side of things is their greatest motive.

James was just an example. I'm just saying extending Mata for 3 more years is just a waste of money when we need to invest properly in the squad. I would rather have booted him out and given his wages to one of the youth prospects and given them more playing time. Replacing him with someone like Rodriguez especially at that price would have improved the team significantly in terms of squad depth.

This comes to mind every time someone mentions Hames. Hasn't done anything afterwards to warrant such hype, another player who was happy to stay on the bench for Madrid.

That's a reasonable concern. Hope against hope that Ole plays him as a 10.

It's a decent deal because it allows the club to continue amortizing his transfer fee. Wages aren't an issue for United. We have a very good ratio compared to what we bring in

Failed at Madrid, failed at Bayern. Now heading to a average sized club where he belongs.

This is a bit indigenous.

He was very good his 1st season at Real under Carlo. Zidane didn't fancy him once he came in.

He was pretty good at Bayern under Heckynes. Kovac didn't fancy him once he came in.

Saying he failed is extremely OTT and I doubt any Real or Bayern fans would agree to that.

Seems to be very hit&miss with managers in terms of personality

Performances were never the issue with us
