He looks a player, but it's a bit too early for him yet I feel.

Possibly, but at the same time, he's playing far better than most of our players, and I think he'd be a great upgrade over J 'His runs give other people space' Lingz.

Recently signed a new deal as well. I know this doesn't mean he wouldn't be sold, but the price would be pretty high.

True, but I think we're in the market now where everyone is going to be expensive and overpriced

Except Fergie didn't really focus too much on British talent, he bought young potentially great players and developed them regardless of nationality. Hope we're not fixated on any signings being British first and foremost.

Which British talent existed outside of Manchester United from say 2000-2010 ? He signed Bruce, Ince, Pallister, Cole, Carrick, Ferdinand, Rooney and tried to sign Gazza, Joe Cole and Shearer to mention some - all players who were established but not the finished article. But apart from these players and mainly 7-8 players at our rivals and other topclubs, who were good enough to play for United ?

Things are different now. We are not at the same level, while British talent is at a much higher level.

I don't think VVD was set on Liverpool, it's just that they were the only top club to want him for that kind of money.

As @Sandikan mentioned it was public knowledge during the previous summer window that Liverpool had tapped him up well before the window opened; I think I remember it being reported that Klopp himself had been talking to him and telling him how important he would be to Liverpool if he joined. Another club would likely have faced some sort of sanction for doing that, but Liverpool just had to wait until the January window and pay a bit more to satisfy Southampton, while VVD spent his last few months as a Southampton player either missing games or walking around with a face like a slapped arse for not getting his summer move. If he genuinely turned-down City for Liverpool then there's little doubt he wasn't going anywhere other than the warm embrace of Klopp.

I’ve thought for a long time Rashford is overrated. He’s no way near clinical enough to be a top striker. Not sure how he gets to take most of the free kicks either. I only remember him scoring 2.

In my opinion, a lot of people on here are underrating this new crop of English players, purely due to the traditional train of thought which dictates that English players are often overpaid, overrated and overhyped.

Whilst it may have been accurate to say that about English players in the recent past, I really do think the youngsters coming through the ranks now are special, and the club is right to be looking at these types of players.

Who are you including in the current crop?

Young players usually fall away quite quickly. If you look at their squad from the last Under-21 campaign there are a few decent players who are already developing good careers, but where’s the World Class talent?

It’s far easier to have a good group at 17 or 19 level than bring through even one or two World Class stars.

Youth football is unbelievably misunderstood and overrated.

What is this so called "superstar strategy era" supposedly ? Where are those superstars? Pogba, yes. I don't recall others. Well, I hope we get good players.

Falcao, Di Maria, Ibra, Pogba, Sanchez and Ed’s obsessions with Thomas Muller / Bale / Neymar / Ronaldo.

Yeah it always amuses me when people refer to Woodward’s ‘Galactico obsession ‘.

We should buy young players and develop them. That’s the United Way (erm...Martial, Bailly, Lindelöf, Dalot)

Okay, I see. Maybe I just see the superstar word a little bit differently. Ibra and Falcao were past it already. We can probably include Sveinsteiger here as well then, he was past it. Sanchez is past it, however we all thought he would be a superstar for us. Di Maria, hmmh i guess he was a superstar, didn't work out. Muller, Bale, Neymar and Ronaldo never even got here. It truly is/was a bad strategy .

There are some good British kids around, but like you I don't want all our signings to be like this. Who would the experienced players in the team? The ones who are letting us down now? Ole should remember that if SAF had followed this policy then maybe he wouldn't have been signed. Some of our best players have been foreign. Ole himself, Vidic, Evra, King Eric, Big Pete etc.
Thanks @ti vu how did I forget Ronaldo?

Exactly, we already have a bunch of British kids in the academy, why buy more of them when what we need is some proven quality that can lead the kids we already have, it just doesn't make any sense to me, hopefully it's just paper nonsense.

Fergie was always in for the best British players though, but that was when there was some exceptional talents like Rio and Rooney, or top talent like Carrick, but even other than that he still went for the likes of Neil Webb, Smalling, Jones and Young. I think he felt having a British nucleus was important.

Aren't England youth teams winning pretty much every youth tournament right now? Or arent they atleast winning games that the senior time generally doesn't? Where is this perception coming from then? Except maybe France, I don't see any other teams generally loaded with as many quality players as I see England right now.

Youth teams yes, but if you look at the 3 best youth players, 2 of them (Foden and Hudson-Odoi) ar ealready at rivals and the other is Sancho. However we don't need yet more kids, we start two young, inconsistent forwards every week, we have Greenwood, Gomes and Garner from our own youth that cover the Britishness needed, we need some proven quality to help the youth we have, not Crystal Palace and West Ham's kids, and if we want proven quality we will have to look outside of the British isles.

Fergie was about 50-50 with players from the English League and those from abroad over his time wasn't he? Ignoring academy graduates anyway. I imagine with academy graduates you would be looking 50-25-25.

He over time managed to get a great balance between players already proven in English football and those from abroad.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Ole's supposed strategy, and I think it refers more to players who have played in British Leagues rather than British nationals. Given the brevity of the task of transforming the club, it seems wise to start with players who can hit the ground running, rather than first having to adjust to the league, Fred as a decent example.

The only price you got right there is Alderweireld and that's because it's public knowledge what his release clause is

Here we go again with these ridiculous prices. You even acknowledged Saul’s massive release clause the other day and are still saying 50 million.

I think it's safe to say both AWB and Sancho would elevate us, obviously not enough English players to go all out homegrown but those two would be good signings. The likes of Maguire and Rice nah bang average and we already have enough of those

Maguire is not bang average he’s won more than Sancho and AWB combined.

We would be lucky to have him atm, he would be our best CB by far.

Please let me have what you are injecting

True Saul would be more expensive but players don't always go for what their release clause is. I could also see an Everton paying 30+M for Jones. He's British, and British players go for a premium. With outgoings we could probably get those 5 for net spend of roughly 200-250M. Worth it. We need to upgrade in squad quality.

That chutneys stayed in the fridge for too long pal. Jones is worth around 20m. Woodward isnt an expert negotiator. Also some of the pricing is absurd. Rodris release clause is 60million, why would he go for 35? Sancho for 60m is a joke when Dortmund sold Pulisic for the same amount.

Yea that's true about the release clause but no way Saul will only go for 50 when you listed Phil Jones for 40. Saul in this transfer climate will fetch a bit more than that.

The reason we get pennies for our players is because they are on insane wages and performance bonuses. Everton will not pay £30-40 million for an injury ravaged defender on massive wages, regardless of him being English.
