How w things have changed since Jose has taken over, before we would have sold him and Morgan for next to nothing, now we want some money for deadwood

Indeed. I can kind of appreciate us helping outgoing academy players to find new (and suitable) clubs and not demanding premium fees, this reputation helps us sign young talents in the future, too. But in general, I agree. Looking at the transfer fees in today’s market, it’s about time we asked for the ”true value” of players.

Given that we played hardball with Schneiderlin and got pretty much all our money back, I wonder if there was a directive from the owners that we should stop flogging players off so cheaply as we have in the past and that's why we're playing hardball over Memphis.

I think it's more Mourinho not having the usual crap sell on fees for United. If a team bids for our player they want them, we can easily keep them don't need to sell. Selling for the first fee that comes in is nuts.

This.
We had to flog a few off cheaply because the buying club knew we needed to sell.
It also didn't help that we signed them onto obscene wages.

Because your CEO and Manager have to be in sync. Jose set the tone right from the start by saying, 'I have a big squad, bigger than I need, but I don't want to sell anyone. I'll only let people leave if they really want to go, and the right money comes in'. Right there, you've set the tone. We'll sell if the player demands it, but it'll be on our terms at our price. Even for players we don't need. Under LVG it was a case of, these players are surplus to requirements, if they want to play, they have to leave. You've shifted the bargaining power away from yourself completely.

The timing of selling Schneiderlin and potentially Depay in January, is important too. You'd imagine Mourinho will want to move 3-4 more on in the summer as well. Firstly teams tend to over pay in January, secondly, you put downwards pressure on prices, if you are offloading a bunch of players at once. Spreading a few key sales out, over two windows, is smart.

I love how we're standing up and being counted in the transfer market now. No longer are we accepting a pittance for our players.

Pre-Mourinho: Nani, Rafa, Hernandez + RvP = £15 million

Now: Schneiderlin + Memphis = £40 million (potentially)

Finally i don't have to feel embarrassed for our outgoing transfer business anymore. Seriously, "negotiating" like we did the last 5 years, you would have been thrown out from our University's corporate planning simulation.

Boo. I really don't want to see Evra at another PL club.
