Usually the only thing separating a DLP and a DM is their range of passing. A DM with an immense range of passing is a DLP bar of course certain special tactics like Tiki-Taka where you don't want the DM to use that passing range as it impedes the tactics.

Carrick has improved a lot, but even in 07-08 he had a great range of passing. I definitely consider them both deep lying playmakers that year, if anything the "deep lying" part could be removed as they went up and down really well.
