Touted wonderkids who made no impact in football

Arda Guler may fit into this category.

The Moroccan winger that played for AC Milan at 16. Can’t remember his name.

Guler's already looked great for Turkey. Perhaps it won't happen for him at Real Madrid in the long run but sure he'll do well as a main player for a side slightly down a league.

Mastour. Last I heard, he was playing in the Moroccan second division

I'm fairly sure Halliovic played for Birmingham City for a short spell, could be wrong.

Another one around that time was Penaranda who was a Venezuelan wide player and he had a good loan spell in Spain. Watford had him on their books and he played about two games for them over a five year spell. No idea where he is now but Venezuela never call him up so can't be that high a level.

Zoran Tosic
Adam Ljalic
Rodrigo Possebon
Davide Petrucci
The top 2 had fine careers.

The bottom two especially possebon were severely overhyped. Was coming though at a time where your name and your nationality created more hype around you than your actual skill and talent.

What? Guler is a sensational little player, plays for the biggest club in the world and is only 19. How does he fit the criteria?

Jese Rodriguez. Currently playing in Malaysia alongside a man from croydon named hong wan, and a man from Malaysia named Matthew Davies.

Sotiris Ninis was supposed to be the next big thing from Greece 10 years ago.
Stefano Okaka was also ridiciliously hyped after his debut for Roma at 16.
In the early 2000s the River Plate and Santos teams had a few players. Costanzo, D''Alessandro and Cavenaghi / Robinho, Diego and Elano.
Rafael Sobis, Ganso, Thiago Neves, Nilmar,...

Many there had an impact on football, had from great to good carreers even if not ending being Maradona

Ganso is definitely up there for the worst. Was hyped as the next great thing alongside Neymar.

He was the best player with Ney in Santos, it wasn't just hype and he won multiple tiples included two Libertadores, being key in both, that certainly it's not nothing

I recalled my Liverpool mates were raving about a certain Dani Pacheco, touting him to be the 2nd coming of fusion of Fernando Torres + David Villa.

Wasn’t Cengiz Under supposed to be the next (Turkish) Messi at some point?

We had him at Leicester. Clearly talented but struggled to get around the pitch.

He also decided that whenever he was ever within 30 yards of goal, he’d basically just shoot.

Freddy Adu
Sonny Pike
Gael Kakuta
Gai Assulin
Sebastian Diesler
Kerlon
Francis Jeffers
Josh McEachran
Michael Johnson
Fred Macheda
Denilson
Adriano
Anthony Vanden Borre
Hachim Mastour

I’d even throw in Jermaine Pennant, Ravel Morrison and Giuseppe Rossi amongst thy is list as well.

Adriano and Rossi did nothing?

Adriano was a beast when healthy and the closest thing to Ronaldo (fat) until he fell off the rails when his father died.

Rossi was the one of the best goal scorers in La Liga during that period when he was playing for Villarreal and only Messi and Ronaldo outscored him during that period.

Moses Ashikodi.

Represented England at all youth levels up to u-19, was touted as a prolific striker and was even a borderline wonder kid on FM. Joined West Ham aged 17, but his career never seemed to get going. He's played for over 30 clubs (mostly non league), and mostly just a handful of games at each.

Thinking of players i wanted us to sign when we sold Ronaldo who's careers didnt pan out the way their early hype suggested.

Gourcuff
Pato
Diego

Also remember wanted us to sign Davide Santon for full back too.

All those players had really good careers, compared to the ones mentioned above. Big stretch

Still time for him, but Rhian Brewster went from top scorer at U-17 World Cup and CL medal to 2 goals in 80 games in the Championship

I would say Vela had an ok career to be fair
Vela is an insane nomination for "players who made no impact".

The guy has 70+ games for Mexico and scored 200 goals with another 100 assists. Scored in the CL, was the MLS MVP, played in WC and won the Gold Cup.

Deisler definitely made an impact. The man played 36 times for Germany.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred was an amazing talent before his injury. Still salvaged himself a good career, but he was supposed to become so much more.

Daniel Braaten was superbly talented by lacked commitment.

Per Ciljan Skjelbred was Martin Ødegaard level of talent, but a very ugly injury ruined him for developing into top club material.
Well i guess my memory is horrible, but at least i am consistent.

Adnan Januzaj, Gideon Zelalem, Charlie Patino in recent years.

None of them did anything like their early promise suggested, for varying reasons. I think Pato would have done had it not been for injuries!

But this is not about players who have not fulfilled their potential/promise, but about those who have made no impact at all.

Football manager 2006 legend

Ansu Fati comes to mind, and of course Freddy Adu

Ricardo Vaz Te was my first thought for some reason. Lit up a Toulon tournament shortly after moving to Bolton and looked like a real player in the making. I thought he completely vanished due to injuries.

But I'm just seeing now that he played in almost 100 Premier League games. I can only assume he was always coming off the bench late on because I don't remember a single one.

Kerlon ending up in the 4th division in Japan was unexpected
