Touted wonderkids who made no impact in football

Only read through the last few pages, so not sure if any of these have been mentioned, and wouldn't class them as wonder kids but certain names stick out at Arsenal.

Miguel Azeez, Zelalem, Fran Merida, Dan Crowley, Lupoli, Wellington Silva to name a few.

Who was the young Dutch left back who had a great euros a few tournaments back. Was snapped up by Real Madrid and subsequently disappeared off the football radar?

Guler's already looked great for Turkey. Perhaps it won't happen for him at Real Madrid in the long run but sure he'll do well as a main player for a side slightly down a league.
Guler like odengaard should have never have gone to Madrid. Guler has all the ability to make it at the very top ala odengaard. Just needs to go to the right club where he can be given the no10 role.

Id have him at Utd in a heartbeat.

Yeah it's just not true.

I followed reserve and youth footballer extensively at that time and possebon was never this great midfielder with massive potential people on here will have you believe. He was a sideways passer who didn't really excel in any aspect of the game but has a nice name and heritage.

And that injury whilst looked awful, he was literally back a month later. It most definitely wasn't this career ruiner people say it was, he just wasn't that good to begin with. If he had half the amount of talent people claim he did, he'd have had a much better career.
But it is. And being "back" is nothing at all like being back - he clearly came back mentally fractured and devoid of nerve and confidence; he was never the same player after that game.

I don't know what kind of midfielder you think he should've been. There was no regard for his nationality - Brazil haven't mass produced midfielders of renown since the 80's, so I don't know where you're going with that.

He was simply regarded as a young player doing well and progressing constructively. And then he wasn't.

My "did not properly read the OP" pick : Josh Mcechran

Maybe not a wonderkid, but remeber alot of hype about Harmeet Singh when he signed for Feyenoord. In 2019 he was realeased from HJK Helsinki .
This guy and Wilshere were supposed to tear it up for England for years. We heard about Wilshere but this fellow just seems to have dropped off the face of the planet with only impressive youtube compilations from youth and Reserve games to attest to his ability. Come to think of it, a lot of Chelsea players who were being hyped to the high heavens belong here going back all the way to 2008.

An absolute myth. Tom cleverly had more to his game than Possebon, but possebon was more highly rated. What did he actually excel at to warrant the hype around him?

In short term a Villareal or Real Sociedad type move makes sense, Kubo established himself now and you can still fight for CL at these clubs

I imagine when Odegaard was coming through he was billed as "the best thing since Skjelbred".
More or less. I think the more modern media in Ødegaards time made him the most hyped talent ever from Norway.

The 5 massively hyped talents from Norwegian football that i can remember are Ødegaard, Håland, Skjelbred, Carew and Braaten.
Easy to understand that I have some feelings for Rosenborg, but their tactic back in the day was going for the best Norwegian talents.

There was an english kid who went from Villas academy to Barcelona a few years ago right?

Can’t remember his name but he was real promising as far as I eecall.

This seems to be a you issue rather than the player as the things you keep putting forward are projections that weren't even around at the time let alone now. It's like you wanted to be wowed by a Keane/Scholes/<insert> and that the player couldn't just be technically sound, tidy and quietly going about developing effectively, which is what he was doing.

Some of the older Irish lads on here might remember Martin Murray. Played for Home Farm and had United, Leeds, Everton, and Spurs after his signature. He went to Everton but that's the last I heard of him. He was touted as the best Irish player since Best.

At one point Odegaard looked like he'd end up on this list.

Special mention for Freddie Adu and Ince (not Paul, his son).

Pione Sisto... Lad was from my home town in Denmark and he was so good. Unfortunately it seems as though he didn't have the mental stability it takes to reach the world class-stratosphere.

He had a fine career in his own right, but far from what could've been.

Louie Barry? If it's him then he went from West Brom Academy to Barcelona La Masia for a couple of seasons and then now to Aston Villa. He's currently on loan at Stockport .

I wanted to say Rhian Brewster and Billy Gilmour were both touted as wonder kids at one point but a quick search resulted in both of them having a Champions League winners medal each. Not sure about impact but they've got more important medals than most established players.

First player that came to mind was Freddy Adu. But was he really overhyped by football, or was he overhyped because of Football Manager which then translated to football ?

I also remember Cherno Samba.. again that was purely a football manager hype but then clubs started to look at him because of his FM ratings.

Will Keane- too many big injuries at a young age, would have played in the EL instead of Rashford if he didn’t get injured in the F.A cup the week before.

Gael Kakuta
Dale Jennings, Bayern Munich signed him from Tranmere Rovers.

So he was technically sound and tidy, the absolute bare minimum of any decent midfielder?

Call me weird but when Fellaini kept scoring against us I thought he was a wonder kid.

Pretty sure this lad ran us ragged in a Europa League game at some point.
