Film Top Gun: Maverick

I don’t think really matters (popularity doesn’t mean good etc), but Fury Road was very popular with the average viewer, it wasn’t only heralded by critics

It flopped at the box office though, people just didn't bother going to see it.

It didn’t flop. It did pretty well. Especially considering it was rated R, which is always a problem when it comes to doing really big numbers. Plus we all know that box office is a poor reflection of quality anyway.

It lost money.

Quick google says it grossed over twice what it cost to make.

Not that it matters. Lots of absolutely woeful films make loads of money. It’s a terrible metric for quality.

Box office takings don’t all go to the studio and production costs aren’t the total cost (marketing, distribution etc), the film lost the studio an estimated $20-40m.

I agree though, it’s not a good metric for determining quality of a film.

Ah, ok. Fair enough. Still a stretch to call it a “flop” but whatever, we’re all agreeing on the most important point.

Side note. I wonder what the top grossing R rated movie is?

Deadpool 1, 2 and the Joker...

Joker, which knocked Deadpool off the top.

Maverick deserves to be seen on a big screen.

Aye a couple people have told me that, definitely seems like that type of film. It's a 40 minute drive to the cinema here sadly, but maybe I will end up going

I didn't know that! Although I shouldn't be too surprised, I originally didn't plan to watch it at the cinema and ended up arriving late for a showing of another film, and got stuck with it.

Max Max losing money, initially at least, shouldn't be some major surprise. It legit had no major star power involved, nor is it some huge franchise. It was a passion project, and backed as such on the belief it would be more of a big cult hit, it delivered on that aspect.

That's your opinion but I'd disagree. Fury Road was probably the most overrated movie I've ever seen in my life. It was complete trash. Maverick was not flawless but I'd rewatch it over the brainless shit heap with no acting that was Fury Road any day.
Something that occurred to me after watching Fury road; where was their water storage? Just as valuable as petrol/diesel but I didn’t notice any water tankers.

I swear that the hype around the movie was not over the top. It is the real deal, and it has everything for the fan who enjoyed the first movie years ago and for the newcomer discovering the world of Top Gun for the first time. Really enjoyed it from start to finish!

Sure but box office didnt account for stream rights and movies distribution right years after they finished cinema reelase as well.

One thing they lack was a charismatic rookie (elite). They're all cardboard character and rooster was very unlikeable

I didn't mind Thunder Road but I wasn't that enamoured and found it almost boring. I have very low expectations of the geratrics in jets so maybe ot will exceed my expectations. I guess we will see in due course as I'm buggered if I'm paying to see it at the cinema.

I'm surprised at the people saying that they won't be going to the cinema to watch this???!!

This is a show that was literally made for the big screen.

I watched the new Blade Runner in very HD on my widescreen at home and it was great. No lights, emergency escape signs, wankers on their phone, eating popcorn, crisps or other distractions and drinking a beer I actually like for far far less money.

Fewer and fewer films are getting me to the cinema these days.

Out of interest, why is it crap?

It's loud over the top nonsense with terrible acting by most of the cast.

All it does is shout look at me I'm going to make a loud bang every five minutes.

There's no heart in it at all it's just loud and shiny

I know people like Arnie on here but he is absolutely terrible

Don’t bother watching this one at all unless you watch it in the cinema.

I'll probably watch it at home for but only once I have a very hi rez copy. Although if it is still in the cinema in mid/late July I might relent as my son and his girlfriend are back from the US and he loves us all going to the cinema.

You need to watch it in the cinema for the sound. No home cinema system will come close. Also (if you do watch in the cinema) go for IMAX over normal screen.

I’ve been slagging it off a lot but, to its credit, it’s a film that reminds you how fun the whole cinema experience can be.

Sydney iMax isn't open again yet.

Yep, that’s how Waterworld eventually made a profit. Well DVD sales at that time I guess but still.

Top 5 all time action movie stars?

1. Tom Cruise
2. Arnold Schwarzenegger
3. Dwayne Johnson (might end up #1 by the time he's done)
4. Bruce Willis
5. Sly Stallone

?

Schwarznegger over Cruise. Jackie Chan over both.

Im pretty certain movie studios don't back losing projects just in case they might be a cult hit in years to come.

Anyway Maverick has no such issues. Its already done Fury Road's entire box office in less than a week.
