Film Top Gun: Maverick

Ageism! I have it on good authority that us oldies, do in fact, stay out later than 9pm!

Yeah but then you have to go home at ten to pull the curtains and the film would only be halfway over

 or have one of those giant cooldrinks in the cine, leave the cine every 15 mins to go to the gents. The bladder ain't what it used to be, i tell you!
Gets confusing when you two chat back & forth.

ffs, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Nicolas Cage, Vin Diesel all behind the Rock ??
I was, admittedly, thinking more about box office revenue and longevity. People accept the rock as an action star the way they do Schwarzenegger, it's its own type of quality that's not the same as acting talent, and yet more talented actors have failed as action stars.

The Rock cannot act. He’s a generic acceptable tall guy with one schtick that he’s still using from WWE. The same shit smirk laugh, look away thing. The expressive hands. The knowing smile. He’s an absolute hack. Walking Tall suggested that he might study the craft and actually become an actor. He didn’t do that. He carried the same WWE cartoonish performances forward instead.

The Rock hasn’t been in a single great movie. Not a one. They’re almost universally average to shit. He’s passable as a ‘big guy does comedy’ but even those films die if an ensemble cast isn’t carrying him. He’s horrible.

Arnold fronted some of the biggest movies of all time, and had performances to carry them. He has a body of work that sees him incomparable with Johnson and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone consider them vaguely on the same level.

Really weird the amount of Arnie fans on this site recently first it was everyone saying hes better than Stallone and now it him vs the Rock.

Looking forward to the Arnie is better than De Niro thread

Arnold is horrible, I suspect nostalgia is clouding your vision.

Just saw Maverick, thought it was painfully average with a few good bits. Won't watch again, unlike the original.

For the most part, this is kind of true. Even the Walking Tall part, he did a Q&A a few months back on that time in his career, the advice given to him was to absolutely ignore his WWE past and persona to crack Hollywood, even slimming down a fair bit. That persona and being a workout fiend being absolutely natural to him.

I don't think he's a good actor at all, at least in a dramatic sense, but he definitely has natural charisma and confidence. He's had some reasonable decent comedic moments though. He's also pretty genuine and people do kind of like that. I've 'followed' him in some form for 25-ish years, I guess and I've not seen much said about him that'd suggest he's not a nice dude.

But in terms of acting ability 'carrying' an action film, Arnold is just superior, I agree. But maybe the Rock just needs a well written self-deprecating role.

Arnie is far better than Rocky Mumblecore but that doesn't make him a good actor. Like the others he just plays slightly different versions of himself only the end product, on average, was much better.

I think Mad Max raised the bar for balls out action movies. When I saw all the five star reviews for this I was expecting something similarity revelatory. And was disappointed at how formulaic it seemed. Similar ratios of excitement to corny exposition as every other action movie ever. With queasy amounts of gung ho “merka feck yeah” throughout.

Fury Road was some of the worst writing I've ever seen in a movie. Plotholes galore, completely illogical action, the guitar guy with a flame thrower car was ridiculously stupid and made no sense in a post apocalyptic world with a gasoline shortage and the whole breeding program with girls that looked like they'd just come from a social influencer modeling shoot was atrocious.

Watched it at the largest IMAX near me. Just as cheesy and predictable as I expected. Enjoyed every minute of it.
Refreshing to see Jennifer Connelly and Tom Cruise's crow's feet and wrinkles on close ups. She is still gorgeous btw

I didn’t say it was flawless. Still shits on this movie from a great height.

That's your opinion but I'd disagree. Fury Road was probably the most overrated movie I've ever seen in my life. It was complete trash. Maverick was not flawless but I'd rewatch it over the brainless shit heap with no acting that was Fury Road any day.

Absolutely mind-boggling that, when discussing these two movies, it’s Fury Road that you choose to use the words “brainless shit heap” and “complete trash” about but whatever. Nowt so queer as folk.

Fury Road was one of those films that critics love, with its fancy visuals and editing and all the production on it, but everybody else finds average resulting in it being a bit of a flop.

What's mind-boggling is that you would bring in Fury Road as an example of anything but the worst writing ever seen in an action movie. Even though action movies always require suspension of belief to some degree, nothing in that movie made a lick of sense. And I've no idea what the bolded slang is supposed to mean.

Comparing the two, the unique action sequences of the fighter planes were light years better than watching some nonsensical moron with a guitar on a truck with flamethrowers in a world where allegedly gasoline is a rare commodity.

Yeah, the production value was high for sure but it was a complete waste of someone like Charlize Theron and I can't remember Tom Hardy saying two words in that flick. It's like George Romero just wanted to blow things up and had a 3-year-old write the plot.

 Cool your jets (no pun intended) To me it’s obvious that Fury Road is an infinitely better movie than Top Gun. Albeit both of them are big, dumb popcorn movies that shouldn’t be taken too seriously. However, nobody is forcing you to agree with me. So that’s fine. If you don’t know what ‘nowt so queer as folk’ means you can google it.

Yeah, it's a completely unimportant debate for sure! But Fury Road is a pet peeve of mine. It's one of the few movies I did not just not enjoy but actively hated watching because the writing was so utterly atrocious and offensive. Maverick had better acting for an action movie, a plot that was not completely illogical, and the action sequences were unique and fun instead of just doing things to blow them up.

Also one who never understood what made Fury Road so good, seemed like a semi-decent mindless action flick. Always assumed it was just the imax experience or something that had people raving about it.

Saw in the cinema last night. Really enjoyed it overall even though parts were cheesy.
he’s such a dead wringer for gooses son. Great casting.

I also liked Mav’s love interest. She’s quite the Milf.

It’d be much better having seen the 1st one before seeing this one. Lots of reminiscing and flashbacks.

Beyond the milf, she's also an oscar winning actress. She was great in requim for a dream, beautiful mind and blood diamond.

Apart from the Guitar dude, the lack of CGI it's really a bland movie.

Maverick is highly entertaining, a proper sequel, cheesy and cringey but boy it really entertains.

Exactly, it’s not trying to be Hamlet or the Ring Cycle. It’s a bit formulaic but so is Bond. It’s aiming to entertain and it delivers big time, particularly in an environment of childish CGI superhero films.

I haven’t watched Maverick and probably won’t go to the cinema to watch it, but Fury Road was absolutely brilliant.

I don’t think really matters (popularity doesn’t mean good etc), but Fury Road was very popular with the average viewer, it wasn’t only heralded by critics

Maverick deserves to be seen on a big screen.

Sure but you’re replying to someone who considers Fury Road “bland”.

Top Gun has a lot entertaining scenes but the rooty tooty yee haw America elements are aggressively bland at a level that is pretty hard to take and far more off putting than any flaws in Fury Road (IMHO).

I do agree that what makes both movies stand out is the relative lack of CGI. It really shows how much the reliance on CGI has homogenised action films over the last decade.

Nothing recent about it. He's not an incredible actor but you dont need that necessarily for blockbusters and as far as action movie stats go, he was one of the biggest and most iconic many would have seen.

Like is said in that thread, acting schmachting, T2 is the best action film ever made.

Then action films must really suck if that crap is the best

I haven’t seen “Fury Road” so I can’t comment on the relative merits. As for the gung-ho aspects, well it ‘s Top Gun and, in return for using their equipment, the film is not going to show America in a bad light. Plus, like a Bond film , it has the set pieces (instead of a casino, it’s macho, military BS around a pool table in the bar). It may be corny and derivative but you cant’t deny that it is well done, entertaining corn.

I found the pool table/bar room/beach scenes absolutely excruciating tbh. Toe curling to watch. So much so that the sailing/motorbike “look at Tom do cool stuff!” scenes seemed benign enough in comparison. They even made the slightly bizarre love scene tolerable.

I liked Jumanji :nervous:

Good movie. Decent as a pair of movies. I did say great movies though.

Arnold was in Terminator, T2, and Predator. He appeared in a lot of lightweight sh1te but they’re all ace.

Taking the point from someone else that nostalgia is probably blurring my vision. Probably true. I do stand by the statement that The Rock hasn’t been in anything meaningful. It’s all generic sh1te. You could probably edit San Andreas and Skyscraper to be a single movie and few would notice.

He’s harmless enough as a fella. Gets on camera in Movies that make money. I guess that’s a big deal to some.
