Saw a long preview for it when I went to see Doctor Strange. Honestly, I figured it would be another cash grab trying to cat fish us all with nostalgia. And it probably is that, but it is that in the best possible way. It was only 5 or so minutes. But it felt like it was a proper sequel to top gun. Like Tony had been resurrected to direct it. It has that Tony Scott feel to it. If the rest of movie is as good as that, then its going to be awesome. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, he never had the reputation of Ridley but his movies always had a distinct feel to them. My personal favourite is probably The Last Boy Scout. Tony directing and Shane Black writing. Just a great combo for a 90s buddy action movie. The stuff popcorn dreams are made of

Tbf Tom Cruise was always adamant it wouldn’t happen unless the script was perfect.
He’s a strange dude but the guy is arguably (along with Leo) one of the best actors of the last 30 years. I think it was always going to be good - fast jets and loud noises + nostalgia, but nobody expected it to be great.
Ticket booked for the 24th. I have to watch it on a normal cinema as the Imax here only does Italian, I might have to watch it again on the Waterloo Imax when I'm back in London in late June
Seeing Russia feck about and realising America could crush any military / air force in the world has taken the shine off this movie for me.
Give me 6 months training in one of these jets and ill free Ukraine all on my own. Cruise isnt anything special
Dudes gonna pull off a Best Picture nomination for fecking Top Gun isn't he? Tom Cruise is above the laws of Hollywood.... I mean it needs the audience reaction to confirm it, but it's got the right stuff coming from the critics. I'm not sure they can casually ignore it given some of the stuff they've nominated since moving from 5 to allow for things like this to happen

At what can you continue to ignore it? It's either this or eventually an MI pulls it off, it'd just be funnier if Top Gun did it. They can't cave in with other Blockbusters which aren't as good mostly(Fury Road aside, which is just another level).... there's no point in giving them out to Avatar, Black Panther, Dune etc.... then ignoring others because it's more 'action' or whatever bullshit. I mean, they probably will, but still.
I just want the opening for Maverick to be released by Paramount Pictures as a teaser already. I'm sure they will emulate this intro with the required touch of modernity.

I just don't believe blockbusters should get Oscars. Surely it's enough to be popular without one
Should we give Fast And Furious10 an Oscar as no doubt it will make more money than Top Gun even though it will be complete rubbish.
The Oscar should go to the best film with the best acting and storyline regardless of popularity.
Not to a film that is basically good fast food something enjoyable at the time but after a while you wish you had tried something better.
Top Gun may well be the biggest money spinner of the year but is clearly not going to be the best film of the year or something to held up as a masterpiece of filmmaking in years to come

Fast Series RT scores since they were reasonably decent, 5 onwards - 77, 71, 82, 67. 59 vs
Cruise Produced MI and This - 93, 94, 97, 97
Bit of a wild comparison there. Metascores are the same, Fast in 50's and 60s vs 70's and 80's. Not numbers that force an issue like TDK or Fury Road did.
Blockbusters have been getting nominated forever, I named four for you that didn't fit the previous template, Saving Private Ryan is a blockbuster, so was Titanic, so were Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. They literally expanded it from 5 because of TDK etc etc.

So is it "The Oscar should go to the best film with the best acting and storyline regardless of popularity." OR "I just don't believe blockbusters should get Oscars."
There's been far more cases of lesser quality films getting an oscar because they're not blockbusters than the reverse. Half the time the Oscars is actively used as a promotional tool to market less popular films rather than rewarding quality.
Just seen it. Brilliant film. Some of the nostalgia is a bit much and some of the flying a bit over the top but overall you leave the cinema having gotten exactly what you wanted.
It's a better film than the first but it's not going to have the same impact.

No, they only showed the English version on regular screen here. It's absolutely worth seeing in IMAX though. The flying scenes are incredible I only wish there was more of them.

The animosity between Maverick and Rooster didn't make a lot of sense considering its likely they would have been rather close in the circumstances surrounding his childhood. Was also a bit corny but I get they tried to create that arc.
Concur on the nostalgia aspect. I know the F14 is the star of the show in the original, but the way they utilised it in this film wasn't great. It was exactly my concern that they'd give it a god like status when in reality, it was out of date at the time the first film was set. This part of the film could have been avoided all together and still been great. Otherwise just let them run for the hills with it after take off... Can be said that the F14 is still one of the fastest jets ever produced and faster than most 5th generation fighters.
Also wasn't a fan of the build up to the last mission - the cinematic aspect of the first film was phenomenal and it didnt have that same vibe.
The kiling of Mr Pigeon through the film was a nice touch. Enjoyed that part
Non-spoilers - This film is a love letter to itself 30 years on. Dont go in expecting a traditional sequel, and while the plot carry's on the story line, there's a lot of re-visioning of the old story with a modern twist.
But the jet scenes are incredible, the sound is great, unfortunately the sound track is nowhere near as good and pretty much forgettable.
There's also a distinct lack of homoerotica which shall disappoint the gang especially @Mr Pigeon
Good film, but lacks the charm of the first - still 7.5/10 so very watchable. I reckon they'll make further films but without Cruise as the lead. There's more to explore with the cast.

I think my biggest issue was the lack of realism in the flying. The original, whether intended or through lack of CGI at the time, was actually pretty realistic. This film went too far in a lot of what it portrayed even simple things like flying up in between two jets. I was hoping Cruise being such an aviation nut wouldn't go down that road.
I loved it and its probably the film of the year and objectively better than the original, but as you say it lacks the charm that made the original such a cultural icon.
Absolutely fantastic film and well worth a watch at the cinema by the way. Among the many questions you get: "yes" it has dangerzone. Not sure how it will translate to the small screen but there is nothing on EARTH that compares to the sound of supersonic jets doing their thing
