Top 3 Game Consoles ever?

I have to agree with Weaste, most people just seem to be making their decisions on what their favourite brand are, be it Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft or whatever.

Don't talk shit. You have no idea what people are basing their decision on.

Fact is, no console has ever, or probably will ever again sell like the PS2 did, and therefore deliver about 90% of the great games of its generation (bar the usual Nintendo games like Zelda, Mario etc), therefore it's the best, by a fecking country mile.

That is not a fact at all.

I don't get how people can say X360 or PS3, they're both pretty much the same console, arguably the 360 has a better games catalog at the moment, but the PS3 is far better as an entertainment system because of it's Bluray.

Err, for a start, people new to the gaming scene can say those consoles, so can anyone who truly ranks them best.

You seem to have a problem with people's opinions and distinguishing between facts and your own opinion.

Well, it's obviously not the size of quality of the software library is it?

Why is that obvious? Just because you think the PS2 had more quality games than any other system, that doesn't make it true.

No sign of the new caftard then? You sound like you've got PND already. :p

Unfortunately not, if the little bugger isn't out by next wednesday they'll induce. It's a pain all this waiting around!

I was 7 when I got into gaming and it was a ps1 so that maybe one of the reasons why I rank it as the best that I'VE ever played:

1.PS1
2.PS2
3.Nintendo DS/Xbox 360

I've never owned a PS2!

Out of interest Weaste if you've enjoyed playing it, then why didn't you buy one? a ps2 has never been expensive.

What are you on? I can just as easily say that you have no idea what they're basing their decisions on either, neither of us do, hence why I said "people seem to..", not "people are definitely..". Don't try twist my words.

It is fact, how can you say otherwise? There's no other console that's ever had as big and diverse a games library as the PS2, no other console has ever even come close.

It's a forum you gimp, of course it's my opinion, just like that was your opinion, maybe I should have been more specific. It's clearly impossible to get everyone to agree on what's the best console ever, because most people will pick their favourite, which is not necessarily the best (Just to add, the SNES is my favourite, not the PS2), I'm just trying to clarify things by using figures, namely the huge games library and amount sold.

Hard to say I might go

Ps2
Snes
N64

The original Play Station sucked here imo, I hate reading write ups on American websites going on about fighting games and RPGs that never saw light of day in the UK. PS2 made up for it though and we've got pretty much all the good games especially as there still releasing some games like Yakuza 2.

1. Mega Drive (childhood bias)

This should please you then

Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

- Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 und 3
- Columns
- Alien Storm
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Space Harrier
- Streets of Rage 1, 2 und 3
- uvm.

Because all consoles have a lifespan and sooner or later the number of games being released will decrease and eventually stop, so of course you're going to buy a newer console so you have new games to play (it doesn't mean the games are better though).

...so why would i buy a new console if the games aren't better?

...so why would i buy a new console if the games aren't better?
I didn't say games on a new console wouldn't be better, I just mean it doesn't gurantee it. Look at the suckers who bought a Saturn and could have just stuck with their Mega-Drive ;)

If we're including Amiga's...

1. Amiga 1200
2. Amiga 500
3. Amiga 4000

Not sure why the PS2 would be so far ahead of the PS1, it didn't really bring anything new or that hadn't been done before. Don't see why it matters that it has so many games either, the vast majority were turd anyway.

Well as I said, I think that the good to turd ratio is the same across all systems (apart from Wii which is a total turdfest), so the fact that PS2 had more of everything means it had more turds and more goodies than anything else.

Are you saying gameplay has deteriorated?

I'm saying that it no longer has the same importance that it once had. This started around the time of the Amiga when people started to get wowed by the audio and visual aspects. Certain film genres have gone the same way where quality of plot, writing, and acting is no longer the be all and end all, and you can probably blame Star Wars for that. Many games today, just like many films are all fur coat and no knickers.

It's true! So many games and films show off all the guts and glory and then when you sit down and play it you are horribly underwhelmed that, that is all there is. No real depth, nothing to grab you bar a few moments of explosions and a nice looking tree. The stories in games have gone downhill ever since voice acting was brought into them. Even Mass Effect, which i loved, seemed a bit shallow at times.

Amiga was a computer.

I owned an einstein which most of you lads won't have heard of (was a computer too with the big disks). It was incredible because (not including the in built games) there was only one released game for the whole system....It was extremely rare

Top 3 is difficult

1) Playstation 1
2) Super nes
3) Megadrive

But you could add in nintendo 64, ps2 whatever. Some of it comes down to nostalgia, the games. I never played ps2 though may buy one as they're cheap now. I think the super nes and the megadrive was quite 'iconic' but the ps1 tops it for me because of ff7, tekken and all that

It is sooooooo true....and depressing.

I can attach a keyboard and mouse to, and run Linux on my PS3, I don't see the difference. Amiga was designed as a games playing machine.

Weaste you know your shit but there's no question it's a computer. You got a ps3. It has media centre capabilities - but it's a console, that can run lynux
and has media capabilities

Spectrum, commodore +4/64, Amiga computers

Sure as the amiga evolved it was capable of more and the 500's - most people used for games but I've never once seen it referred to as a console and it was capable of more then games

as technology has evolved it's become a little 'fuzzy' but the old definition of a console (I think) was play it on tv and you didn't have to install anything just put in the disk/cartridge etc and play

I did just find this though:

Console Passion Retro Games - Amiga CD32
The Amiga CD32 was a 32-bit CD-ROM based game console.

PS2
SNES
NES

The PS2 was fecking incredible. How anyone can say different is beyond me.

Any doubters should go back and play God of War 1 and 2.

Atari - no competition
NES - no competition
SNES > Sega (close as hell though)
N64 > PS1 easily
PS2 > Gamecube > Xbox
PS3 > Xbox > Wii (sorry nintendo)

Read a little further into your wikipedia quote....

The Amiga was originally designed by a small company called Amiga Corporation, and initially intended to be a next generation video game machine

Its nuts and bolts are those of a console, just because they bolted a keyboard, mouse, etc. onto it later doesn't change what was really under the hood. For example, why would a computer need to be able to change its hardware registers every four horizontal pixels, have hardware scrolling, have hardware sprites, have a dual playfield mode for parallax scrolling, etc.?

It's arguing semantics here, but consoles are technically computers in any case.

pretty much so. It is fuzzy, it is down to interpretation. I've read plenty of times it been called console on ebay and different on other sites

So it probably comes down to preference what we call things. I've always thought of it as a computer myself but if we're including it - I think my top 3 would still be as is

Gimp huh? Get off your high horse, your first post was definitely warranting of my response, if you are intelligent enough to clarify your position, you should have done so in the first place. That isn't a slight btw, before you get all uppity again.

You think the PS2 is the best because the huge library of games and the amount sold. That's fair enough. However, just because the volume of games was so great, that doesn't mean it had the larger volume of great games. That is subjective.

For example, I own more PS2 games than most people on here will have ever played, and yet it's not in my top 3. Why? Well that's because it didn't give me as many great gaming moments as those machines I listed. The problem with that thinking is a machine is only as good as the creative people developing games on it, well yes that's true, but it's also the most defining point. Video games machines are meant for entertainment, and all this time I still play my Master System much more than my PS2.

The PS2 was a decent machine, still is. It's not in my top three though, nor would it be in my top 6. Sales figures just don't entertain me.

The thing with the PS2 is it has fantastic games in pretty much every genre imaginable, theres something for everybody. It doesn't specialise in FPS and Racing Games, or party games, its got everything.

Sales don't necessarily mean quality but in the PS2s case the quality of games are the reason it sold so well, not hype or marketing or gimmicks, it just had/has an amazing collection of games.

Uppity? Not at all, you were the one who responded aggressively in the first place, not me. Don't insult my intelligence in a thread about consoles, in your words, "don't talk shit."

We're not going to agree, simple as, you're basing your decisions on what your favorite console is, I'm basing mine on what I think was the best, not what my favorite was.

Like I said, if I was picking my favorite, I'd go for the SNES, because it has some of the greatest RPGs ever, which are my favorite type of game, but I just can't argue the point that in general, the PS2 has the biggest and best collection of games to suit everyone, including some brilliant RPGs.

For me, being 21, these are the 3 most memorable I have owned

PS2
Xbox 360
Megadrive.

However, I have a brother 10 years older than me. So the Atari was also a big part of my childhood.
