Top 10 albums of all time

Often the famous albums are among the best. There's a reason people know Blonde On Blonde and not Knocked Out Loaded.

Off the top of my head, I would personally consider the following to possibly be in the 'GOAT' category;

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Nirvana - Nevermind
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

However, there are other artists who I would include more readily, though I maybe couldn't select one particular definitive, stand-out album. For example, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Jam, Pink Floyd - I guess I'm answering a different question here, so I'll stop at that.

I haven't really listened to any of Bob Dylan's stuff, so I'm going to download some after seeing his name on here so frequently. Any suggestions on where to start? Does he have a good compilation album?

In my personal opinion, it's almost never the case.

No reason they wouldn't be, fame and quality don't really have much to do with each other either way. Plus the more music you know the broader the scope for "famous" is. Arcade Fire's Funeral seems like an unbelievably obvious choice for these lists, yet how many mainstream music fans would actually know it?

Being famous doesn't make an album good or bad, but the best ones usually do stand out, especially over time. The Velvet Undergound & Nico is probably one of the most famous albums of all time now and a perennial fixture on any of these lists. It didn't start out that way though. Often quality + time = fame.

There are a load of Dylan compilations. I started with "The Essential Bob Dylan", so maybe there?

If you're looking for an actual album then "Bringing It All Back Home" would be a good starting point.

1. Stereophonics - Just Enough Education To Perform.
2. The Vines - Highly Evolved
3. Oasis - (What's the Story?) Morning Glory
4. John Mayer - Where The Light Is (Live in LA), or if live albums aren't allowed, Continuum.
5. Eric Clapton - Complete Collection.
6. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
7. Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
8. Box Car Racer - Box Car Racer
9. Less Than Jake - Borders and Boundries
10. Reel Big Fish - Everything Sucks

And I'm sticking with all of them.

EDIT: Ah feck, forgot Dylan, can't knock off any others, guess he's at 11. :(

Another thread in the entertainment forum for people to put in their top 15 so we can get a definitive top 50, everyone seems to be ignoring it though

Maybe get one of the mods to change this thread's title to one that highlights the other thread?

Sounds like a plan, just deleted this from the end of my post in there.

"Just spent the last 10 minutes swearing at myself and being generally indecisive about this. I'm not going to edit it even if I change my mind now, which I will, many, many times. Also, yes I did pick Paramore, and not because of how fit Hayley Williams is, but yeah, she is."

Noticed, don't think something like that matters on everyones actual submission, explaining choices is fair enough just saves hundreds of other random posts if we discuss it in here. And totally agreed on the hayley Williams thing!

You may want to change the Clapton album though, compilations and live albums don't count.

Noted, the Mayer album will have to change too. Cheers.

EDIT: Yes, Hayley Williams!!! I'd use her shit as toothpaste, as the saying goes.

EDIT EDIT: Changed the Clapton album to the collaboration he did with the king. Unless I'd get away with the Unplugged album?

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Nothing to add, just felt like it.

No problemo, think David Hasslehoff may have released an album once upon a time - that's not allowed either on a count of the fact it'd run away with it.

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

I don't know why, because I know it's all personal preference but this nearly killed me with laughter. I used to listen to it years ago and still occasionally listen to it, but one of the greatest of all time?

Tomalonge's choices are an odd mix of albums I love and music that makes me want to stab myself in the face.

Seems fair, I don't know anyone else with as varied a taste as me. I missed out a load of RnB, rap, folk and blues stuff too. Old blues like Muddy Waters/Billie Holiday.

The only think I've heard and not liked is Metallica, but the members of the band are some of the most inspirational in music. Love the people, hate the music

At least I didn't admit I like a couple of Miley Cyrus songs.

Lots of edits haha. I'd call unplugged live tbh, Nirvarna and Jay-Z would have been considered for mine if they were allowed.

It's just going to be a whole lot of famous albums isnt it?

In my personal opinion, it's almost never the case.

 you never fail in any thread about music. I've never known anyone to be a bigger music snob than you, it's amazing. Could you even name 15 albums? do hidden gems fleet foxes, perfume genius and kurt vile have 15 albums between them?

Gah, someone added Is This Is? by the Strokes on their list.

I've got to knock off something for that, god knows what'll end up going then.

  1. Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
  2. Rain Dogs - Tom Waits
  3. Car Wheels On A Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams
  4. Pneumonia - Whiskeytown
  5. Summerteeth - Wilco
  6. Songs In A&E - Spiritualized
  7. Astral Weeks - Van Morrison
  8. Jolene - Dolly Parton
Explain yourself.

Well, in my defence, I did say that I would list various artists work higher than all of those which I first mentioned, so it's not as if I'm saying that Linkin Park are a better band than the Rolling Stones.

However, as far as a debut album goes, Hybrid Theory was pretty groundbreaking; I believe it is still one of the biggest selling debut albums of all time, no? It made a huge impact when it was released.

Also, you mention that you used to listen to it years ago - go back and listen to it all the way through now, it still sounds fresh and relevant and nearly every track is excellent. Of course, it's a matter of opinion completely, but I'm not sure what more you can seek in a 'GOAT' contender - massive sales, radio singles, songs which nearly everyone knows all the words, an album which you can point to and say, "That's Linkin Park, that is what they are all about."

This summer - 15 years on from the release of Hybrid Theory - the band are headlining Download, where they will play the album in it's entirety, from start to finish. There aren't too many bands who have an album worthy of that.

Still laughing?

My list leans quite considerably to my favourites rather than what may technically be the best albums. It also reflects on the fact that I don't really listen to much pre-2000.

Perfume genius was a goodish album, nothing more. I haven't listened to it in ages.

There's nothing "amazing" about it, and frankly, I can't control what I like. I just tend to like a certain type of music. Oh I can name shit loads of albums alright. I used to listen to the popular rock outfits everyone likes, but over time I find them to be bland and samey.

They've also built most of their success on ripping other people's material.

I'm not the biggest Zeppelin fan, but i'd argue that they didn't rip off most of their material. Some, certainly was plagiarised.

I wish The Beatles had their discography on Spotify so I could really be arsed to really explore them.

Been working my way through David Bowie's which is kinda overwhelming. Some of it's really good, some of it's mehish floppy disk futurism.

They built on a lot of their so called classics on work done by people not part of led zeppelin. Not the most original band in the world that's for sure.

I tried David Bowie a couple of years ago, overwhelming is a good word to describe how I felt. I didn't go all the way (there's a lot of stuff), but some of his stuff is really genius and still sounds incredibly modern 30 or 40 years after the initial recording.

The really scary thing with Bowie was how prolific he was at his peak. Over an album per year in the 70's, the vast majority of them acclaimed as classics. That's a serious success rate and a lot to take in, especially when he changes style so often.

I'm most fond of Low and Let's Dance. They are also quite different, which is another plus from me to Bowie who produces quality no matter the style.

The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust is the best one so far.
Dunno, Ziggy was always an annoying character for me, his fall was inevitable. I preferred his cousin or even his uncle, but Ziggy was one of the reasons I didn't especially enjoy season 2.

I dislike the song Let's Dance, it's just so nauseatingly 1980's.

I found myself enjoying side 2 alot more on Low than the part where he actually sang.

It did have a drunk duck though!
