Top 10 albums of all time

The first 6 Black Sabbath albums
Master of Puppets and Justice- Metallica
Blues for the red sun and Welcome to Sky Valley- Kyuss

I guess, but it changes from time to time.

A few albums to be considered.

  • Are you experienced - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
  • Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band - The Beatles
  • Abbey Road - The Beatles
  • IV - Led Zeppelin
  • I - Led Zeppelin
  • London Calling - The Clash
  • Blood on the tracks - Bob Dylan

This is just an excuse to use the bullet point format button isn't it?

Anyway it's this...

  1. Whatever R Kelly album Ignition is on
  2. Every other album ever

In no particular order, I tried from memory to work in those records that were absolute game changers in their genre and had massive success outside of their target demographic.

The Beatles - Rubber Soul
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Led Zeppelin IV
U2 - Achtung baby
Pearl Jam - Ten
Nirvana - Nevermind
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers
The Beastie Boys - Licenced to Ill
Kiss - Destroyer
Def Leppard - Pyromania

Of course it's all subjective and I can certainly give good shouts to RN7's picks of The Velvet Underground and Nas' Illmatic.

You'll never get one definitive list, each person probably has their own opinions on what is the best (and is in someway influenced by their own 'favourites'). Personal opinion in no particular order -

Led Zeppelin I - Led Zep
Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zep
Abbey Road - The Beatles
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Harvest - Neil Young
Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan
Thriller - Michael Jackson
Astral Weeks - Van Morisson
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses

What an album, in my top 10 favourites of all time, but have gone more for what I consider the best when doing my list

Violator by Depeche Mode is probably my favourite album. Top 10 much harder, but usually made up from the selection of these 25 albums...

Is it me or is Led Zeppelin IV really, really overrated? I love both sides of Physical Graffiti, but IV is just boring imo.

It may be, yes, but it's got Stairway to Heaven on it, dude. Stairway! II is probably a better rock n roll record, though.

Powerslave i love, and Chaos AD is great.

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead is currently my favourite, but I've been on a Smiths binge for a good two months now, can't stop listening. It'll be different in a few months no doubt. Wouldn't know where to start with the rest.

Nevermind and Appetite for Destruction in the top 10? Wow, i'm surprised by that. Also, OK Computer seems to top a lot of these lists but Radiohead bore me to tears most of the time.

RedNome is a Radiohead zealot, if they hadn't finished first he wouldn't have tallied the list.

It'd be interesting to see how different the list would look if done now.

Manics' Holy Bible? It's not even the Manics' best album. Generation Terrorists totally slays. That guitar tone

Ramones - Rocket to Russia should be on any Top 50 too, IMO.

It appears that just 17 people participated then. Maybe listing 100 or 50 albums was too much of a drag for many others, so that's why they didn't join?

If someone ever volunteers for a new one, I'd recommend a different system. You get 25 points, and you decide how you'd like to distribute them. Min. 1 point per album, maximum 5, so you could have 5 albums listed, or 25 of them. Just a thought, saw it on one other forum...

NaS - Illmatic
The National - Alligator
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
The Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground & Nico
Black Star - Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star
Pixies - Bossanova
Neil Young - After the Gold Rush/Harvest
Radiohead - OK Computer
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

or something like that, not much thought went into it. There's a lot of great music there though

I think Nomey thought it'd be too much work if more people were involved.

How did that work out then? Doesn't it skew things towards people with narrower musical taste, don't think I could whittle myself down to 25 either.

I like the Melvins too, have only got Lysol and Houdini though.

This is tough, but it would probably go something like this (in no order, and only one per artist, otherwise I'd probably only have Beatles/Stones/Floyd/Who):

Pink Floyd - The Wall: I'm a huge fan, and I know the purists likely won't agree, but this album resonates with me like few others.
The Who - Tommy: Another double album. Not as tight or focused as Who's Next, but the ideas are just spilling out from Townshend. Keith Moon is also on fire here.
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers: Obvious choice, but it really is an incredible album. A Day in The Life might be the best song ever.
David Bowie - Hunky Dory: Hard to pick one Bowie album, but this one is the best combination of style and substance (a balance Bowie has occasionally had trouble striking.)
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street: Another double album! The Stones peaked with this one, and never came close again.
Neil Young - After The Gold Rush: Part Crazy Horse; part folk. A truly brilliant album, highlighted by the title track.
The Cars - The Cars: For me, the best debut album ever.
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces: Some of the best lyrics; great hooks.
The Rheostatics - Whale Music: Criminally underrated Canadian band. Doubt any of you will have heard of them. Check this album out.
Guns 'n' Roses - Appetite For Destructions: To think what could have been....

Agree with that, they have at least 20 better songs.

Same with a lot of bands i think, their most well known songs are usually their most watered down or commercial, with the fan favourites often the most obscure ones.

Is it me or is Led Zeppelin IV really, really overrated? I love both sides of Physical Graffiti, but IV is just boring imo.
I love Led Zeppelin, but I think their albums sometimes fall a bit short. In other words, they have a lot of great songs, but no truly great album (at least nothing on the Sgt Pepper/Exile on Main Street level.)

I remember being really disappointed with this record. Comfortably numb, Young lust, and all 3 parts of Another brick were the only tracks i could get into. I realise you might find that odd, and say the album should be enjoyed as a whole rather than the individual tracks but the rest were just really weird and/or boring to me.

I agree, but i know most won't. All of their records up to Presence are among the most highly rated albums ever, which always surprises me a bit.

The Holy Bible is a masterpiece. Lots of music magazines list it in their top 20 albums ever made. It puts everything else the Manics have made to shame to be honest.
