Tom Cleverley | 2012-14 Performances

If he wasn't an academy player people on here would be far more critical of that performance.

People have been overly critical of Cleverley in this thread at times, he's hardly been immune from it because he's an academy product.

If anything I think some of the praise he's getting now is because Fellaini's inadequacies have highlighted Tom's importance to the team, but regardless it's nice to see him getting deserved praise when he plays well like has done this season.

Best games from him this season have been against Chelsea, City and yesterday. Bit of a shocker against Liverpool at Anfield but regained composure in the second half.

Had a decent game. If only he offered a bit more going forward. Anyway better than anything the big lump had to show so far.

I think Cleverley's only hope of a long-term future in our first XI, or as a top player in general, is if he becomes Carrick's replacement. I don't think he has quite enough ability (or bravery) to play further forward and be a top-player. I do think he has more than enough ability to become a top-player sitting in front of the defence though. Not too many defensive midfielders have as much ability as him, and I think he has many attributes suited to this role.

He has good energy (he is generally a 'busy' player), he has an ever-improving positional sense and has a fairly good first-touch and short-passing ability. I think in a couple of years, in a 3-man midfield - he could sit in front of the defence with perhaps players like Powell or some other young talent we may bring in (or even Pereira/Pearson) in front. Only thing is I don't think he has a particularly special long-pass (although some may argue he doesn't have a particularly 'special' anything), and I feel this is useful for this quater-back role. Some may prefer a bigger/stronger player in this role too.

Does anyone think he can drop back even further in the future?

I think he definitely has the ability to play that role in the future. We have seen a lot of players take up these sorts of roles as they progress through their career. Only time will tell with Cleverley though, if he finds his groove where he is now and nails down a spot, it might delay it but I think every midfielder these days will always see that deep lying role as a future possibility.

I think he still has a lot more to give the team though, especially in terms of energy. I think that area where Carrick is, will probably be 'replaced' with a signing rather than see Cleverley slot straight in (not yet though but when the time comes).

England midfielder Tom Cleverley out of Montenegro and Poland games with a calf injury

Tom Cleverley has been ruled out for England's two World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland.

Cleverley complained of a sore calf after training on Thursday afternoon and had a scan later that day.

Following the results the England medical team confirmed he would miss the upcoming two matches and he has returned to his club for further treatment.

Hope this isn't too bad, with Fellaini already out...

EDIT: Just read Fellaini isn't having his surgery anytime soon, thus isn't out.

I won't mind him missing the England games if he can be available against Southampton. He's been playing pretty well recently, and he's exactly the sort of player we'll need against Southampton's game - someone who can keep the ball under high pressure.

Besides, Hodgson was no doubt planning to leave him out in favour of playing Lampard and Gerrard deep. Can't have us actually keeping the ball or any nonsense like that.

He'll miss the Southampton and Sociedad games which is very annoying. I can only hope Fellaini steps up in those two games and we'll definitely have to delay his surgery then.

Bad news cause he played well in the last game. Fellaini is the better player IMO but it is possible that for our team, Cleverley would be more useful. Anyway it would be interesting if Moyes experiments a bit and plays Kagawa as Carrick's partner and see how it goes.

Anderson will have to step in. He's capable, I have no concerns there.

Excellent with him and Fellaini injured, we would've to play Anderson again, meaning more open spaces in Midfield. feck sakes.

Anderson was awful against West Brom and we were very open.....hopefully if he plays he can put in a decent performance

I'd prefer Giggs - I'd even consider throwing Kagawa in there to see how he performed next to Carrick

maybe a bit gung ho

been watching Southampton a couple of times and they play well on the break like West Brom

weak link it Wanyama and his passing is awful - put pressure on him and we will get plenty of the ball

I'd prefer Giggs ahead of him. Heck call back Nick Powell and he'd give a better performance than Ando. I don't want to be harsh on a United player but Ando's a lazy cnut.

Yes, he is capable of performing well against Southampton at Old Trafford.

Bet you thought about the same about West Brom at Old Trafford.

It was comfortably, the most pathetic performance I've seen from a United player in the last year or two.

I don't want Anderson anywhere near our first 11 at the moment. He can start vs Norwich. If Fellaini's surgery is delayed then I'd obviously start Carrick + Fellaini. If it isn't I'd have to start Carrick + Giggs.

No he's not.

He is. He's pretty much as capable of playing well as Cleverley is of playing poorly. Just that Cleverley's last game was playing well, and Anderson's was playing poorly. There have certainly been times when it was the other way round.

I'm not a huge Anderson fan by any means, but I wouldn't see Anderson and Carrick at home to anyone other than a few teams in the league and think we are in trouble.

The fact is, neither Cleverley or Anderson are all that, obviously. Both, when playing well, are capable of contributing to the team, as they have both demonstrated.

Awful news, our central midfield woes continue.

Ando and Carrick is then vs Southampton. Unless Fellaini is getting his surgery delayed, which would be fecking wise at this point.

I'm sure you do.

You are however, outrageously biased towards a player who has been a complete disappointment in his six years at this club.

How on earth can you deduce that I am 'outrageously biased' against Anderson for saying I'm not concerned about him coming in and performing capably against Southampton at OT, if needed?

This is a strange place at times.
