Didn't the Cleverley to Newcastle thing visibly break down a few weeks back?

I could have sworn that a few weeks back Hughton came out and pretty much said yeah he's a good lad but he won't get a whole lot of time here.

He said that the main sticking point was being able to meet United's demands for him to play a certain amount of games. He didn't give the impression it was a deal-breaker.

I was quite pleased to hear us include a clause of that nature. It's a good idea and stops any potential loanee ending up like Guiseppe Rossi.

There are maybe two or three clubs in the league who would play him on a regular basis, and that'd be only because they're so bad that there's no one else to play, like Blackpool. And he won't get much chance to show his creativity and vision there with Brett Ormerod up front.

Nonsense. His versatility could get him regular games at loads of PL clubs. It's just a case of finding the right one.

By the sounds of it up here (North-East) a similar clause has stopped Welbeck going to Sunderland, we want him to start regularly, they want him as back up to Bent, Jones & Campbell.

In Welbeck's case Blackburn and Blackpool are believed to be guaranteeing first team football. Hopefully Blackburn or Bolton will go for Cleverley.

Good.

Wouldn't mind seeing him Blackburn/Blackpool so. Sunderland can get fcuked.

We can only loan one player to each team right? Would be brilliant if both of them could join the same club.

Don't think that's a rule. There's a limit to how many loans a side can take from other PL teams (think it's two) but there's nothing I'm aware of that would stop Blackburn (for example) from taking Cleverley and Welbeck

Seemingly Cleverly is not part of the squad for the friendly tonight - wonder does that indicate a loan move is imminent.

I'd have been happy to see him go to Sunderland if he was going to start games, but realistically he was going to struggle unless Sunderland have a couple of serious injuries. Bent is clearly first choice, Jones is still highly rated and offers them more of a target man, and Campbell's preseason form has been excellent. Danny would have been behind both Jones and Campbell... Unless he was played wide?

Matty James and Welbeck both went on loan to Preston at the same time last season.

I do know there's more limits when it comes to loaning from another Premier League clubs (as compared to loans from a club in a different division), I think (and could be wrong) you're only allowed two loans from other PL clubs

It's a maximum of two loans from other PL clubs and you can't loan more than one player from another PL club. So the idea of Welbeck and Cleverley going to the same PL club on loan is a non-starter.

Cheers, thought it was two from PL clubs but didn't realise there was a limit of one from a single club. Shame, but c'est la vie. To be honest, if we can't find Cleverley a good loan I'd be happy to keep him. Welbeck & Diouf on the other have have more competition for fewer places so need loan moves

West Brom are in desperate need of a striker or two so I wouldn't be surprised if either Welbeck or Diouf ended up there.

Gosling, Alan Smith, Nolan, Gutierrez, Guthrie and Joey Barton. Would he get a game? I wouldn't be in favour of this loan move at all.

If he had go to a prem club the one i'd be most in favour of would be Bolton. Close to Manchester, manager keen to give young players a chance, and should be guaranteed regular action.

Excellent. Looks live i've gotten my wish

Would he be getting games at Newcastle though?

This is a team who has just sailed to promotion. It's gonna be hard to drop their players who were so impressive last season, regardless if they were playing in the Championship or not. If he's going on loan, he's might as well be guranteed games otherwise it's a pointless waste of time. If he can't be guranteed that, he might as well stay here and learn from the very best.

If newcastle wanted him then they'd do what it takes. It's their loss and you have to ask yourselves what exactly they wanted him for? To sit on the bench and get 10 minutes in a cup game if he's lucky? It's just nice to see we've learnt from our mistakes and if it's bolton then very good. I'm not sure what that means for us, if anything.

Bolton seems sensible. Owen Coyle looks like he's trying to stop the physical hoof and hope tradition of football introduced by Big Sam on Bolton and converting it to a more approchable game played on the ground. Jack Wilshere had a good stint there, let's hope (if he goes) Cleverly can have a similar impact as he did at Watford.

I don't think it will matter. We still have a lot of options and Carrick even gone a month or so won't stop it from happening.

This is the same thing that can happen later in the season.

Well an injury to Fletcher and we'd be left with Giggs, Scholes and Gibson for centre midfield. Basically, we'd be screwed. Not sure if it'd be wise loaning a versatile player out when we don't need to, in these circumstances. unless we're intending on buying someone of course

But, the same thing can happen as the season goes. What happens if one of them got hurt Sept 2nd (not that there is a game).

If Carrick is missing a month from this and holding up Cleverly the next 4+ months for games he most likely won't play in doesn't make sense.

If one of those gets injured on Sept 2nd then we'd all be saying, 'why did we send Cleverley on loan'. Of course if we'd our full quota of midfielders it would be a different story, but the present injury situation is a tad worrying. Hopefully Carricks injury isn't too bad

Carrick's injury is a twisted ankle - not sure how long that will put him out.

If it is similar to Wayne's last season then 2 weeks. But Wayne didn't have ligament damage so have to wait and see.

It's not like we're going to play him in the middle if we only play with 2 CMs.

Giggs, Scholes, O'Shea, Gibson, Fletcher, Carrick. Plenty enough for 8 games until which time Anderson should be back in the picture.

Wigan or Bolton, I'm not bothered. I'm just glad he's avoided the circus in the North East.

According to Daniel Taylor (Guardian) nothing's been sorted yet:

Still no decision on Tom Cleverley - not even certain that #MUFC will definitely loan him out - Wigan, Bolton and Newcastle want him

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley will spend the season on loan at Wigan after Roberto Martinez beat Newcastle and Bolton to sign the Old Trafford youngster.

Cleverley, 21, impressed on United's pre-season tour of the United States and scored a superb individual goal against the MLS All-Stars in Houston.

But manager Sir Alex Ferguson had said that he and striker Danny Welbeck were likely to spend the season on loan at other Premier League clubs and Wigan have won the race to sign Cleverley.
