To your eye: who are 3 the fastest players you’ve ever seen.

Dan James, Walker, Bale.
Walcott and Mbappe will be somewhere in there as well.

Yeah, he seemed like a different kind of athlete when he came onto the scene.

Walcott is the quickest I've seen live.

Jesper Grønkjær is probably the quickest Chelsea player that comes to mind (I have no idea if he was faster than Rudiger or Mudyk but in my memory, he was lightning).
Grønkjær was faster than either Rüdiger or Mudryk. Once saw him give an opposition player a 10-yard start over 20 yards, and still beat the player to the ball.

However, the fastest player I ever saw play must have been Malcolm MacDonald, who was timed as the second fastest athlete in Europe one year, including all sprinters.

I don't know why they don't set up a race. I'd pay good money to see a hundred meter with Walker, James, Mbappe, Rashford, Van der ven etc

Sticking with United players - Giuliano Maiorana, Andrei Kanchelskis, Dan James

Antonio Valencia is up there and Lee Sharpe when he hadn't been at a party!
'

Obafemi Martins, Prime R9, Bale.

Honorable mention goes to Aaron Lennon, Mbappe and Walcot

Kanchelskis, made other players look like they were in rewind.

Walcott, as above.

Mbappe, quickest I've seen with the ball.

Think my answers are more based on when I saw a player absolutely burn another one in a straight race. With that said I’ll go Valencia, Traore and Bale. I’ve never trusted the speed stats. You see some bizarre inclusions of players I’ve never even considered quick.
This, I've seen Sven Botman being at the top on one of those list, how is that even possible.

Young Michael Owen.

maybe his top speed was only excellent, but his acceleration was unreal. He gained yards on players over the first five yards.

Messi really. He makes everything slow around him. That’s pure celerity.

Valencia was quick, but surely not "fastest player you've ever seen" quick.

There really aren't many goals like Bale's Copa Del Rey goal.

in terms of overall pace, acceleration, top speed, on and off the ball, basically how much damage a player can do to you with their pace, Henry stands out for me. Knew exactly how to use his speed and especially on the ball.

Top speed is rarely a good indicator of footballing pace. Usain Bolt reaches his top speed at around 60m. Other sprinters after 40-50m. How many sprints in football are that long?

Acceleration is a far more relevant metric, but not as eye catching so no one bothers propping those stats.

As of 2024, the top three fastest recorded football players are:

  1. Micky van de Ven - The Dutch defender for Tottenham Hotspur recorded the fastest speed at 37.38 km/h during a Premier League match (Sports Leo).
  2. Kyle Walker - The Manchester City right-back clocked a speed of 37.31 km/h, maintaining his reputation as one of the fastest players despite his age (The Sports Mania) (Sports Leo).
  3. Chiedozie Ogbene - The Luton Town winger reached a top speed of 36.93 km/h, making him one of the fastest players in the Premier League this season (Sports Leo).

"to your eye"

Surprised it took till post 88 to have Kanchelskis mentioned. I remember having an argument with a mate because he had some sort of top trump stating Giggs pace at 100, and I asked how that could be possible when the guy on the opposite flank was faster than him.

How about Bellion? There was a running* joke on here when he was - rather unaccountably - our main striker for a couple of months. Whenever he showed, yet again, that he couldn't actually play football: "but man, he runs fast". Think it relied on Plech's delivery to actually be funny mind.

*lolz

Bale, CR, D.James, Mbappe and Henry

So many to pick from, but had to mention all off these.

Hard to say, if I had to choose one

Fastest over 5 metres (acceleration): Garrincha, Robben
Fastest by +25 metres: Ronaldo Nazário, Bale, Kaká
Fastest without the ball (defender?): Nesta

Andy Cole in the first 5 yards was electric

50m - 100m
Kanchelskis
Dan James

Valencia and SIlvestre were fast powerful runners. In another sporting life I reckon would've been good in a 4x100 relay team

other clubs:
Off the top of my head
I remember Des Walker being fast
Dennis Rommedahl of Charlton was rapid

Dembele? Could’ve sworn there is a clip of him leaving Walker in a dust trail.
