To win: FA cup or EL?

In order for Amorim to succeed we will need to spend 250m+ buying him the players he needs to make his system work and without European football we wont be able to afford anywhere near that, our summer spending is reportedly reliant on players leaving as it is.

We desperately need the money from European Football next season so if we lose to Leicester on Friday then the best option will probably be to let Ruben go and hire someone who'll give us a chance of winning the Europa League.
I mean that last bit will never happen but I largely agree with the overall point. Amorim's also on the clock, a season out of Europe entirely is deleterious to the viability of him being here in another year or two. If we're sitting in a similar spot this time next year and we're not competing for a European trophy he's a goner.

I can see your point but you do realize that with no European football at all the squad in question will be the one he currently has unless they scrap Children in Need in favor of a telethon to raise money for Man United transfers.
I’m not so sure on that. More people would leave and we’d save a feck load on wages alone.

The big worry would be the pressure on the scouting network to get the right players in for the right price

Wow!!! ‘Let Ruben go……………’

I’ll just leave that here!!!!

:nervous:

Fundamentally agree with this but since being a modern football fan is all about being a little accountant I suppose the correct answer is Europa League.
Exactly what I was thinking, which makes me less passionate about the game.
I still prefer the FA Cup, but only if United beat 'big' teams.

Even forgetting the champions league qualification, I'd still rather win the Europa League. We have not won enough European silverware throughout history and it always feels special for me, even the Europa.

Adding in how big CL qualification could be for us at this stage makes it a no brainer.

100% the Europa League. Get's us into the Champions League, so much more money and it is a European trophy after all. FA cup is just another trophy.

Given our lack of success at times, we're not in a position where we should turning our noses up at any trophy.

Given the nature of 'knockout' cup competitions, surviving (so far) in both FA and Europa will give Ruben different team selection and game management problems to solve, and therefore more opportunity to hone a squad likely to be able to avoid a PL relegation battle, or if we get snared up in one, capable of escape.

Also of course to win some silverware, in what so far has been our worst season since 1974.

Personally I'd rather he took risks (like playing Mainoo as he did on sunday) in the cup comps, rather than the PL games.

This shouldn't even be a debate- the Europa League, by a mile.

Not being in the Champions League is both an embarrassment and a financial hinderance for a club like United.

It's hard to bring in Champions League-quality players every summer when you can't offer them Champions League football.

I wouldn't worry that qualifying for CL would act as a roadblock to unloading Casemiro and Rashford. Given the career Casemiro has had, I don't think his ego will allow him to finish off his playing days being the guy who is rotting on the bench for two seasons in a row because United decide he's not even good enough to play in a mid-table side. He'll go to the desert to play with Ronaldo or, maybe they'll work something out so that he can go play with Neymar in Brazil. And Rashford will still fancy himself as having a shot at the World Cup so he won't stay at United just to collect a check if we tell him he's not gonna be playing.

Europa even if it didn't guarantee CL football. Probably our biggest trophy since 2013 was winning it in 2017. Nice looking trophy as well.

If Liverpool have won the League Cup, have the league wrapped up, are in the CL final... are you genineuly telling me you would rather United win the Europa League final instead of beating Liverpool in the FA Cup Final?!

I extend this question out to everyone that's saying EL...
Yes, id rather win the Europa League final in that case and it's not even remotely close.

FA Cup. Everyone knows qualifying for Europa League is more important than the Champions League.

Honestly, I think we can prioritize both cups over the league. There aren't really that many cup games left. We only "need" to win 4 league games to get the magical "40 points," and it won't take 40 to stay up this year.

Indeed. Rest players in the league from now on.

No question, the EL and all the up and downsides that would come from it (confidence, CL spot, money vs perhaps some undeserved bonuses for certain players and being whooped at the likes of the Bernabeau and Allianz arena next year).

EL. United fans are too caught up with domestic titles. Europe matters more.

The FA Cup is comfortably of more importance as a trophy to me but the CL qualification is more important than the trophies are.

Why not both?
Prestige is definitely in FA Cup (at least for me)
But we need EL because of ticket to Champions league and additional money.

EL, purely on the basis that securing CL football would put us in a stronger and more attractive position in the summer transfer window, which is going to be one of our most important ones for a long time.

From the clubs point of view...EL Win = CL = Money

So it's an easy question.

Also this team plays better away from the English league so it's probably more likely they will win it than win the FA Cup (again)

Reality, I just don’t think we have the squad or the coach to win either, RA already got his excuse in early saying that wining a cup is not important as it masks over the real problems of a club playing poorly.

I mean Ruben looked and spoke like the real deal, then 20 games later with a 40% Loss rate overall and 54% im the EPL, the United curse has struck!

Yes, yes recent form is ok but performances are truly sterile and tepid!

He looks the part, and his sporting team was excellent but we are not wining anything this season as he’s already demotivated the squad and as soon as they’ve got 40 points they’ll switch off. We can only judge him when he has at least 5 or 6 of his players starting and he’s got rid of the players who will never be good enough. But if he has a similar loss rate after 20 games next season, he’ll be gone!

I wouldnt be that concerned with either. I'd play a mixture of senior players and kids to help them develop and hopefully be of use to the first team.

Last season I was quite happy to win the cup for the sake of Garnacho and Mainoo. Its nice for players coming through like that. But its all about the league and then eventually the champions league for me. And yes you can get a place through winning the europa league, but if we do we'd soon be out anyway. First step is to earn our place there with a good position in the league
