He makes Bailly look pedestrian, and Bailly makes Smalling look a little sluggish off the line. Roshaun Williams said Mensah was the fastest of him, Mensah and Rashford - haven't seen Williams, but he is faster than Rashford, and that says something.
TFM is probably faster on the pitch alone. Williams is faster at longer distances, he did 100m in 10.99 seconds when he was 15. It might be slightly irrelevant though because you rarely get that much space to sprint on a football pitch.

Happy he signed the contract extension and it followed with minutes today.
Was hoping his left foot shot had gone in, as it was a really nice move from the corner.

Don't know what we feed to players like him,Williams,Tuanzebe,Rashford or even Reid before he left but those are some monster in terms of physical and/or pace and if most of them make it along with Pogba,Bailly and others we will probably eat our oppositions alive with their physical attributes.

I'm not sure where he will end up playing regularly in a few years time, but his versatility should get him plenty of experience and game time-- Especially as our annual defensive crisis bears its ugly head.

He's meant to be a midfield destroyer
This is what I want. However, as I said in the past, he will need to be complimented by a great distributor and Pogba. Pogba helps take away some of the offensive responsibility Fosu would normally need, and Fosu can cover for Pogba with his speed and amazing tackling ability.

I just want to say that I love his smile. That is all.

I think with his reading of the game and with improvement in his passing range he can be the faster version of Carrick.

Carrick is one of the best passers in the PL history. TFM isn't a very good passer, but he has other qualities (mainly his athleticism & tackling ability), hopefully he can turn into a Kante type of player for us (I don't think he has the positioning sense for it though), or as others have said Essien, but he'll need to show a lot more in attack for that.

He has more than that in his locker -- he reads and anticipates the game well. I just think as a central defender, he is wasted. Best position in long term is to sit in front of the back four.

I hope we will see more of him in midfield. Could be an option even in big games when Jose wants to close the game, similar to how he used Zouma.

anyone else have a small fear he is going to become one of these players who is going to end up playing where we have a gap rather than a set position...ie. right back, central defender, holding midfielder

hope he finds his position and doesn't become the next john o'shea that's all

We should never have a gap in central defence, and we also have Tuanzabe to take that spot. Sure there is a risk, but many players can play both RB and CDM (Zanetti, Lahm, and now this Fabinho in Monaco).

Don't know if it has been posted or yet but a latest Paul Hirst article said that Jose views him as a right back and wants him to compete with Valencia for that role this season. He has assured TfM that he'll get plenty of game time(and won't be sent on loan) and is rated as highly as Rashford.

Loan time?! :nervous:

Yeah, in interviews and press conferences too, he normally - when he has cited Fosu-Mensah - cites alongside Valencia and Darmian. I'm sure it's a role he can grow into, he's so young that at the minute wherever he gets consistent game time in said position he'll be fine.

Sorry meant that loads game time and wasn't going on loan. Got mixed up in between.

The article also said that Darmian will be sold in January.

As I see it, he needs to learn to cross if he is going to be a RB. But he has the pace for it, and a RB with that size and strength would make the back four pretty formidable.

Aye, I'm a bit conflicted because I think that midfield is where his real potential is. However, to have a RB with that kind of stature and power would be immense, and I know Mourinho likes his FBs big as well.

What was Kante's positioning like as an 18 year old? If you didn't watch him then do you imagine it was as good as it is now?

I don't think he has that passing ability in his locker.
He is actually got a good long ball on him. He's not shown it at first team level yet though, which is understandable because he is young and doesn't want to screw up his opportunities.

Jones is actually the first player I think of, having spent all of that time as a third midfielder when he started with us. TFM has a much better skill set IMO, it's just a matter of finding which place he's best at.

Still too early to judge but he does look like a Mourinho type of midfielder who would fit his previous Chelsea sides like a glove.

Stength & tackling ability is one thing, Fellaini & Schnedierlin have that too but chasing down opponent with pace for a ripped athlete like he's becoming is something worth of reflecting upon. Even under LvG's conservative tactics he contributed tons of fresh energy and that's what we lack at times. Our midfield had tendency to often let opponents approach in the box with no one trying to intercept them.

So far it's a win/win situation. Wherever he'll play, he'll contribute the goods and Jose probably will build further the formation around Pogba but perhaps in matches like League Cup against City he could be tested perfectly for that role which by the way he's quite familiar with.

He only got 20 minutes but it seemed there were plenty of opportunity for him to move into space and therefore get the ball but he didn't bother. Not that he's that type of player, I just thought with a 20 minute cameo he'd perhaps want the ball more.

I'm going to be a bit contrarian here and hope he ends up a right back. His pace and physicality will work well there, and could be a much stronger version of Bellerin. We've been crying out for full backs like the old days, and I think Shaw and TFM could give us just that.

He was touted as our next Pogba last year wasn't he? :D Think he has all the attributes to be a great box to box player, quick, strong, good dribbler.

I feel like he would be completely wasted at RB.

His physicality and speed makes him ideal for a midfield destroyer type of player.

I'm very excited about his potential. Being only 18 his game will improve alot in the coming months and years.

Im in total agreement fellas. Exciting times ahead! Mensah and Pogba in midfield!

I've said it before but he is so much like a Young Phil Jones.

Even their positional dilemmas at that age and weaknesses are similar.
