Feel like getting to the semis have saved his reputation, if they go all the way he'll likely leave with an enhanced reputation so not sure about the idea of him not being 'relevant'.
It’s an ever revolving carousel of whose in vogue and whose not?

He isn't a miracle worker, I don't think any manager could turn us around at the moment, without a tranche of new players.

Our players can't play the type of game he would want them to play, so we would have to go out and buy players who will.
I'm interested in hearing more about his style because from my limited experience of watching Chelsea when he was in charge I seem to remember them dominating games and having a lot of fight/energy but the finishing was pretty terrible. Maybe i'm remembering them wrong.

The alleged quotes from INEOS suggest a squad overhaul and a 'it will take time' approach, which i'm perfectly fine with after seeing two horrible seasons in three years. I just wonder if Tuchel would be the kind of manager you'd trust to oversee a big change like that.

How organised and controlled Bayern have been against one of the best teams in the world has been great, I was a bit against his Chelsea team but between that team and this Bayern one you can see he just works with the players at his disposal

Not sure I would say it was controlled from Bayern. The way they played is a far cry from their previous teams.

I think it's a mixture of Madrid being happy to sit and counter and Bayern having some really good players playing at home.

If anything, I'll be more alarmed by this performance as it was far too open. Same as when we went to their ground earlier this season and controlled the game against them at times.

Perhaps I'm expecting too much and want to see a team suffocate, control possession and counter press but both teams were able to play football with a bit too much ease for my liking. That's fine for Madrid and worked to their plans but I wouldn't be 'happy' if I was a Bayern fan. Not totally disappointed but not content for sure.

Felt like a real tactical encounter, Bayern not overcommitting due to the liability in the transition and Real basically playing the tie in the same gear. I don't think this real team is exceptional but like a methodical boxer they pick their punches and know when to up the intensity perhaps not having the personnel to do it consistently over a 90 min period like a prime City or Liverpool few seasons ago.

I think it shows why Tuchel is competitive in this knockout competition, I think Bayern have an average midfield and Kane brings the attack up a level.

Madrid scored off 2 individual mistakes, maybe Neuer made one or 2 decent saves but you'd expect him to make them and Madrid had 9 non penalty shots, I'd say Bayern controlled the game in terms of what they gave up and arguably should have had the game put to bed if Dier scored

He's the best option, in underwhelming list of names. He could potentially be brilliant but his last few domestic seasons haven't been great

Timo Werner does have that effect.

I know Bayern are getting shit by critics this year, but its basically taken a team to win every game to beat them. And just look at Dortmund. The German league is stronger than the Premiership this year. The Premier League has been dog shit, and everyone crashing out before the semis shows that.

I’m sorry but we’d be 10/15 points better off if we were compact and not so easy to play against. He comes in and the first thing he does is sort that.

he’s also one of the best tactically and his in game management is 150x better then ETH

Out of the potential candidates he’d be my choice. I’d rather Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy take over as joint coach’s than Garth Southgate and I’m not particularly thrilled by the prospect of Graham Potter. Tuncel is an excellent coach, I wouldn’t mind seeing him get the job and then maybe in a few years McKenna or Carrick.

The club won’t sell Rashford for less than £75m they’ll ask for £100m, last season they would have got £100-120m he has much more credit on the continent.

Don’t worry they won’t sell him anyway, it’s all heresay!
There’s hope now, they said that the whole first team squad is up for sale.

The fact he can seemingly coach a defence is partly why I like him. His Chelsea side were tough to beat as well. I haven’t seen United not defend like muppets for about 5 years now

Just going off his Chelsea side underlying stats during his time there:
  • Hired Jan 26, 2021
  • 20/21 from his hiring til end of season - 2nd in points 10 points behind city with 1 game fewer, just 1.2 xPts fewer though. By far best defence in the league just 11.7 xG conceded, 3rd (basically level in 2nd with Liverpool) for xG scored, but a severe underperformance in finishing (11 fewer over half a season is wild)
  • 21/22 - clear 3rd best in the league, 3rd in xG, xG conceded, xPts, as well as the "real" versions of those metrics.
  • 22/23 - sacked September 7th after a poor start to the season, largely driven by the disgruntlement between him and Boehly
Typically he's not ultra attacking or anything but his teams are well rounded and especially strong defensively. By being strong defensively that doesn't mean sitting deep, that just means they don't concede many chances or give the opposition the space to create loads of chances.

He's a top manager without a doubt. Not Klopp and Pep tier, but after them yeah there are few around who can match him.

Tuchel would be a big upgrade from Ten Hag, one of the biggest fraud story in football history. Fully support getting Tuchel!

Would rather have McKenna than him to be honest. His reputation is saved by CL runs, his league record is atrocious.

What is his league record like? Won the league at PSG as expected. 2nd to Bayern with Dortmund. Chelsea 3rd before their current circus. This year is the anomaly, no?

That's a fair analysis. I'm just saying I expected more.

Madrid are a weird one because they are just made for the competition so perhaps I'm being unrealistic but I would have preferred if Bayern controlled it and exploited using Musiala, Sane and Kane more. The balls and moments that came to them were more from improvisational play than organised/structural build up. I thought they could have been a bit more conservative with their play going forward (by picking better moments) and taking the sting out of the game. That's what I mean by 'open'.

Next week will be interesting and a better opportunity to look a bit deeper about his tactical setup.

I mean, other than this season when was he really expected to win the league? At PSG he was there for 2 seasons and won the league in both. It took Leverkusen going the entire season unbeaten to finish ahead of him.

Fair play. I felt his Chelsea should have done better in the league, but atrocious was a a massive over exaggeration, I agree.

Seems a cup manager. Yeah he's won the league with PSG and Bayern but who couldnt. But generally his tactics are more suited to cup competitions. He will get us fourth and a cup but cant see him getting us anywhere near City. Then he'll get pissed off after 2 seasons and so will the fans and we will be back to square 1. He's a bit Conte but I think Conte will do better in the league. Just dont see his tactics as something to build on for years to come. But I get the who's better at the moment.

I feel he would be a good middle ground appointment for a couple of seasons, then when he has us back in the top 3/4 INEOS could look at Alonso/Nagelsmann or upcoming British manager like McKenna or O Neil.

We have a gd of +1 with 4 games to go and people are talking about style of football.

The nit-picking on this thread is completely baffling. Someone even questioned whether he would be a good fit for our current squad :wenger:

Those are fair points. Tuchel wouldn't be my 1st choice either for what it's worth.

Who would you prefer?
I honestly don't know at this point

I used to think that we need a progressive manager who excels at coaching pro active football, because apart from Real Madrid, there hasn't been a successful club in Europe over the past decade that did not play very structured pro active football. I still think that but as I said, I think for the English game in particular, an intense almost obsessive character and a personality of a unifier and someone who is ready and happy to immerse himself in the club like Klopp or Arteta did for their clubs is also a requirement in my view. Ten Hag possesses the former but is severely lacking in the latter.

If we look at who fits that criteria this century, they either came unexpectedly and were relatively untested like Pep at Barcelona, Arteta at Arsenal or Alonso at Leverkusen (I am not saying they are the same quality by the way, just that they stand out with varying levels of success) or managers who did superbly well at an inferior league like Mourinho at Poro or Klopp at Dortmund. So I suppose for the profile I think we should be looking for, it should come from one of these sources. The former is very difficult for us because our former players are just not tacticians, they seem resentful of tactics if anything and are big proponents of the throw players at it and let them figure it out school of coaching. It leaves us with someone similar to Ten Hag's profile but with a much a more charismatic personality. To throw a name out there, I really like what Inzaghi is doing at Inter but I am not sure about his command of English.

the question is would Tuchel wants to come to United? if the articles out there are true that we're going to sell lots of players and the budget spending is tight for next season, would he come to a rebuilding project?

The nit-picking is because the criteria for some of us is not simply, better than this season. Ten Hag was also better than the season previous and here we go again, back at square one. I am pretty sure that whoever we get will do better next season than this one, the bar is too low. The question is who can we get that will get the train on the rails because the only thing that should be acceptable at a club of our status is to either compete for the biggest trophies or to build towards competing for the best trophies. Only small clubs are happy with someone whose main credential is being better than the present.

Well it you are looking for a track record of winning trophies then no one available even comes close to Tuchel. There's a few exciting young managers but they are much bigger gambles.

There are some good reasons around for keeping EtH.

Looks like we have many fans buying into the grand delusions of Ten Hag that we’re playing the most dynamic and entertaining football in the league.
