well id be gobsmakeck if he settled for that.... but even if he did i still don't think i'd pay it considering his last 2 years

also how trust worthy is that list? considering all the reports about shaws wages weve heard recently, and varying reports about anderson and fellaini's wages

Or maybe van Gaal was serious about wanting to assess his squad before bringing anyone else in, on maybe Arsenal is still holding out for a large fee simply because they don't want to sell to us or maybe ... etc. Far to many unknowns

They signed a 30 year old CB for a significant fee first. Should we have bought Mathieu as well?
 
It's a shame Vidic signed for Inter so early in the season.

But then again Evra still left whilst LVG was manager so you never know.

Also I'm liking the pace which is in back line...totally contradictory post!
 
I am not exactly happy with Vermaelen, but we do need a CB that can play left-ish. And while Hummels would have been a dream signing and Jones-Hummels-Evans would have been great, it does seem like a long shot at best. So what are our options exactly? I mean with Vermaelen you'd know he can fit into 3 man defence, him playing LB and CB kind of giving it away.

Maybe we should go for Blind though, he can cover LCB, LB and DM-CM. And in salary&fee would coast pretty much the same. Higher fee, smaller salary.
 
Vermaelen would bring in experience and leadership, two things you can't have enough of imo
 
Evans is a perfectly good first choice for the left side. LVG might prefer Blackett over Vermaelen for the back up as he is taller, quicker, probably would have a better fitness record, already knows something of the playing system, and is free.

Vidic doesn't have the same speed anymore, and so playing a high line with him or Rio was problematic, and meant it was much harder to press teams when our CBs sat back, it stretched the field for the opposition.

Still, I hate seeing him go myself, maybe a year before it needed to happen.
 
if we are going to sign 2 CB's I don't mind him being the 2nd because of his qualities he could be a welcome addition to the squad but with his fitness issues he can't be the only one we sign at the back

Probably not completely accurate, but I'd say the're in or around that. I'm pretty sure Anderson is on either £60k or £70k per week. I'd say Fellaini's is between £75-80k. I don't think we'd be paying him £100k per week, just a rough estimate imo. He wouldn't be my first choice, but he's the only cb besides Hummels that we've been linked with and he'd definitely be better than nobody. We really can't afford to go into the season with so few options at cb. I really don't know what Shaw is on, but I wouldn't believe the papers. I seriously doubt he's on more than £100k per week.

you can have all the experince an leadership in the world, but it you can' deliver on the pitch, it counts for jack, and with vermaelens injury record and form over the past two seasons it is very doubtful he will be able to make any meaningful contribution on the pitch

But he is injury-prone! Unless LvG knows exactly about his injuries and what Arsenal/Belgium are doing wrong in that regard, what's the point?
 
4 injury-prone centre-backs probably is better than 3 injury-prone centre-backs, but Vermaelen just isn't very good. If we 'miss out' on him, it wouldn't be the worst thing, provided we source a cb from somewhere else. For the love of god, make an offer for Benatia.

Alright, getting a bit silly now. I think you get the point without being pedantic. What I am saying is that Van Gaal is a better judge than we are so let's just wait and see.
 
For those that want him to go to Barca..

Think about it, I know he's no Hummels but is a quality player when fit. We seriously need more numbers/options at the back so if Vermaelen doesn't sign.. Then who will?

De Vrij signed for Lazio and Hummels won't be coming..
 
Compare to the Vidal thread and think about how underwhelming this signing will be when you see the muppets contributing only 42 pages of it

If Vermaelen goes to Barca, what about Daniel Agger? Good defender, supposedly available for a similar price. Or is there still an embargo on buying Liverpool players?

If they're not pissing about converting defensive midfielders, they're going for players who can't get in Arsenal's first team.It's mad.
