Thomas Vermaelen

Do. Not. Want.

Verm is quite shit like most of Wenger's CB's over the years.

Would be a nice signing. I just feel like Van Gaal has that ability to get the best out of players, like most great managers, and Vermaelen is good at his best.

Same here, though I think we'd best be getting the best out of say, Michael Keane.

He's more than good enough for rotation/backup and even first XI. Just look at Barca's defenders in recent years when they dominated the league and the CL, not always up to scratch defensively, but constantly a threat going forward, or at least very good at building up play from the back.
If the team works hard as a unit to win the ball back (which I'm sure we will under van Gaal), we're better served with having CB's that are good going forward, like Vermaelen. Ideally we would get someone more complete, but I can't imagine who that would be, with Hummels looking increasingly unlikely to happen every day.

Apparently wanted by Barcelona, if its even remotely true then Wenger might take Vermaelen over there personally to make sure he signs on the dotted line.

Expecting this to happen now that Chambers has been signed. Chambers can also play at center back and according to U19 coaches, that's where he'll end up soon.

If Chambers can play basically anywhere across the back four then surely he's exactly the player we should be after?

I didn't know that, assumed he was only able to play full back.

But in that case, I'd agree. I think we'll be looking to get this one across the line now.

Buy an experienced centre back to be a starter and Chambers as back up for the three defensive spots and we'd be set.

That'd be £16m on a backup, who'd probably rather be somewhere where he can get more games, like Arsenal.

For what it's worth, Chambers has pretty much only played at RB and considering Jenkinson looks like he's leaving, they've probably signed him to play there.

Apparently, Arsenal's french players are back in training but Vermaelen is absent..

In related news, some sources on Twitter are saying Arsenal have asked for a Player+Cash swap deal for Phil Jones

The swap deal rumour was doing the rounds last week with either Smalling or Jones involved. There's no way we'll go in for that. If they pushed for it I reckon we'd probably be willing to involve Nani, though I think we'd rather sell him abroad. I noticed he was linked with Arsenal at weekend though I imagine that was just paper talk. They're pretty well stocked in that area.

Interesting if Vermaelan isn't back with the squad. Maybe they know he's going so they're not too fussed about him being fit. Unless he's just been given extra time off.

The reason he's not back yet could be because of that injury he picked up in the second game of the WC.

He'd be perfect for the left side of the back three. Him, or Vertonghen would be ideal there, although I don't think Vertonghen is anywhere near as available.

We need more depth in that area as well as experience. I agree signing him would be good, but not if we lose anyone in the process else we're still left needing backup. Considering we're using 5 defenders right now, we don't have many in the main squad.

Whats perfect about an injury prone defender who had 1 decent season defensively and has been really dodgy since and has lost his place in a rival team?

Vertonghen is better on the ball by a distance (hence being a good leftback) but also has his dodgy moments at CB. Still miles better than Vermaelen

Vertonghen is the ideal but no way Levy lets him leave absent some exorbitant sum.

Nope, both are midtable CBs, Vermaelen shading it.

Vermaelen was much better defensively than Vertonghen, when he actually played regularly.

The Arsenal fans I speak with reguarly think he's actually pretty talented, just repeat hes been injured lately and off form, they actually want to keep him, obviously a small sample size view but speaking with them I hope we can bring him in, if LvG likes him thats good enough for a mere mortal like myself.

Same here. A few I know would be gutted if he came here.

The people at work (none of which support Utd) don't rate Smalling or Jones and would be underwhelmed if their respective clubs signed them.

I suppose all 3 are either injury prone, out of form, lost confidence!

Injured again, apparently.

Surely the only logical reason for pursuing a player with this many question marks surrounding him would be the relatively low fee? Beyond that it really makes no sense to me as his inability to stay fit will surely hinder any chance he has of regaining past form.

If that's the case and he's injured again, then surely we will cool off in our interest. Sheer madness if not.

I don't want him and I hope we don't sign him, but if we part with anymore than 3m for this crock with months left on his contract we are stupid.

Agreed. I'll back van Gaal to the hills, but not on this one.

this is one of his first decisions so no you wouldnt would you.....Ashley Young being a first teamer next season...bet thats not one to follow him to the hills on either.

Did i say that?. Anyone who proves themselves under van Gaal's tutelage deserves a First team slot, regardless of names. I just don't want to sign a crock, because of late, that's all he's proved to be.

Well it's your lucky day. The timing of the injury could be enough of a deterrent for any deal.

Did they say what the injury is and what its extent is?
