The Belgian Lescott.

Literally the only positive I can think of if we do sign him is the Arsenal fans going mental that we've bought someone off them again.
On the contrary they might be happy for us to take him as most Arsenal fans I know want him gone.

whilst i understand the negativity over this proposed transfer, There is part of my which thinks it could be a good signing.
2 or 3 seasons ago, Vermealen was up there with the BPL's best defenders. Only injury has damaged that reputation somewhat. Since returning from injury - unfortunatley for him Koscielney and Mertasaker have formed a great partnership, which seems to have dented his confidence a lot.
Get him match fit and repair that confidence and we have an excellent CB. ALSO a buddy for Fellaini lol.

He'd be van Persie's new buddy at the club following Buttner's departure.

To be honest even at 12m it would be a good deal, I hope Woody is angling for the 8m though. He would add experience and drive to the CB position, lets not forget he isnt too bad on the end of a corner/free kick. Would be a nice addition to the squad and add some balance, The back line is looking very young at the moment we need someone to steer them in the right direction. Vermealan is not the Hummels or Mangala we all wanted but he has better experience than both those players and comes in at a third of a price. If LVG can make De Vrij and Martens Indi look like world class players I am sure he can swing this one around.

I'm happy to take the injuries out of the equation, Arsenal have the worst medical team in the PL their players are always injured.

Those aside i don't know enought about him but if LvG is keen its good enough for me, bear in mind with any transfer, its not just the effect on the pitch but also what younger players can learn from these players in training, it can have a great effect

A week after Belguim's exit we will know more if there is some truth in it. If both parties want the deal there will be a way.

I wouldn't mind Vermaelen as long as he's just here to make up the numbers as opposed to going straight into our starting eleven. I think he will prove to be a good backup if we do sign him.

I think that I am on the minority that thinks Vermaelen is a good defender. The only problem I see in this signing are his injuries, but as a player he is good (I rate him at around the same level as Evans), is great from corners, is a good passer of the ball and is a left footer.

If we are confident that the injuries are past it (don't know if this is possible) then I would be ok with this signing.

I'd be happy with the signing. Experienced premier league defender coming in, can cover both CB and LB and is good on the ball and in the air.

He's not really an upgrade on what we've got, but he's great cover and helps to make up the numbers. It puts less pressure on us picking another centre back up for the rest of the summer, and if we only get him then it gives Jones, Evans and Smalling a fair crack at making those central positions their own - something they deserve a chance at. They'll all capable, they've never had an opportunity to nail those down.

I'm not so keen as most on here to bring in a 30m defender like Mangala to automatically take one of their positions when I'm not confident he's a 'step up'.

United's injury record in recent years is not exactly smooth, half our defence seem to end up in the treatment table

The main issue with Vermaelen is his injury record, otherwise he s a good player.

Indeed. If we are really going to add Vermaelen to Jones, Smalling and Evans then we may as well start properly converting Carrick into a centre-back now.

G Nev summed it up perfectly last season. Koscielny and Mertesacker are not individually better defenders than Vermaelen, but together they form a better partnership without him. He could be a very shrewd signing if we can get him to gel with Smalling or Evans. I don't think Jones is the type of guy to put him next to because they're both no-nonsense, like Vida. You always needed a classier CB like Rio to partner and out and out nutter like the Verminator.

Heard £11m as a fee quoted this morning - which is a ridiculous sum of money if true... and to be honest, I don't see how it is.

I wouldn't mind him, but we've already got 3 of the most injury prone centre backs in the league (5 at one point) and I don't fancy another who has history. If they all get crocked we'd need to deploy Carrick again.
it not only his injury problems, his form over the past 2 seasons has been dire.... literally no upsides to the signing.
would rather see us burn 11 million then sign vermarlen and pay him 100k a week to sit in the physios room for next 3 years.

They wouldn't want him to go to us, because they're too scared that Van Gaal might get quality out of him. But otherwise they'd like him gone, if Arsenal get the right replacement first.

In van Gaal we trust!
I'm not sure at all about Vermaelen but I do think it would be worth it just because it would be hilarious if he plays every game next year & we win the league. Wenger & Piers Morgan would lose the plot.

I too don't see an upside to this if it's true.

He's shite.

How likely is that? Big ifs ;)

injuries have already ruined him, I see no way back for him to the top if he ever was top.

If there's a Belgian defender we should be signing from a London club, it's clearly not Vermaelen.

This notion that LvG is a miracle worker better extend to him having healing hands as no matter how good a manger is he can't get something out of a player with a brittle body.

I definitely wouldn't put on any money on it that's for sure!

I can't imagine van Gaal will pin all of our defensive planning next year on the assumption Vermaelen will be fit all the time so we'll probably get someone else. If he plays three at the back I can see Evra being used there as well.
He obviously sees something in him & £11 million isn't that much money in this day and age. We only paid a little less for Powell & Bebe & more for Zaha. If it goes tits up we could always get a few million back for him anyway.

I also find it hard to get on board with centre backs who aren't over 6ft... true, Vermaelen is 6ft exactly, but that inch makes a big difference.

Or so they tell me...
