For much of last season, our midfield was function over form. It will have a very different look about it next season, though, with two top class creative players in Pogba and Bruno, coming into the side together for the first time. To support them and give them the freedom to properly hurt the opposition, we need a positionally-disciplined player alongside them.
There seems to be a pervasive misconception, that to be a #6, a player must exclusively be a destroyer - essentially, a limited clogger, there to win the ball back, but not much else. That isn't the case. Look at how Carrick played the role - he was a superb reader of the game and his primary defensive attribute was his clever positioning, cutting off passing lanes for the opposition. He was an accomplished passer and could set the tempo for the entire game, from deep in midfield. Few would argue that he was there to 'destroy'. In my view, we should be targeting a similar player this summer.
