This is the worst quality PL season since?

@giorno partially agree with your posts in here, but last night was fitting and I reckon the other English teams won’t be far behind. How teams from the league perform in Europe has always been the easiest measure and metric for intra quality, and we’re soon to see just how bad the representatives are as a collective.

The eye test is already over; the way the league looks and plays is another, combined with results for the final nail in the coffin - time will tell just how bad this year’s PL is. I don’t think it will be kind.

I don't understand why people can't see this, beyond being argumentative for the sake of it. Beyond the performances in Europe, the "big" games in the PL have been underwhelming and show a real lack of overall quality.

I'm also not sure the "middle" of the league is much stronger. There is a group of 7-8 teams that have a very similar level and are capable of strong performances on their day but aren't amazing either; it seems strong because it's homogeneous, but I'm not sure it's that great.

It's overall a poor vintage.

I agree about the overall quality of the league being the lowest in a while. See my first post in this thread

I do disagree about the league being poor - it's still comfortably the strongest in europe, 2 teams in CL QF, 3 qualified strainght to R16, Chelsea will win the Conference with their B team and United have a foot and a half in the EL QF - and about Liverpool being nothing special and proof that the league is poor. Liverpool lost to a better team. Not being the best team in the world(in March, to be clear. Just in March) doesn't make them nothing special

We've seen the MSN barcelona get outplayed and beaten by Atletico Madrid. We've seen Guardiola's own Barcelona get shredded in Milan. Again, at this level it can happen, none of it takes away from the fact those were great teams

You don't pull off a 92 points pace over 2/3 of the PL season without being either great or good and extremely lucky. And good and extremely lucky defines Conte's Chelsea maybe, not a Liverpool side that had been dominant throughout the season

We'll have another chance to find out how good these "stronger new teams" are exactly with Villa going against PSG next. We always hear about how physically strong the PL is (which is true) and this is the game to show it because they are going to be badly overmatched technically.

Newcastle showed that the PL physicality was no myth against PSG last season and were unlucky not to beat them twice. Villa need to play with this level of intensity to have a shot.

Usually middle of the table don't do much than f anything, they would rarely do good performances like they have this season. There was always such a massive drop in quality.

I think the takeaway is that the physical approach of the pl is always going to lack some consistency, and I think always hits a ceiling without really technical players.

Pl teams tend to do well when the top European technical teams are not doing well.

Tbf I think there were extenuating circumstances.
That first leg was Newcastle first home game in the CL and they just had the bit between the teeth, the atmosphere was electric.
I also remember Enrique playing a ridiculously open 424 system, perhaps naive to newcastles strengths.
The second leg, newcastle had one shot on goal iirc and were dominated completely:
They also finished bottom of that group.

The fact that Liverpool are 15 points ahead of the next team show you that the Premier League isn't in a great place at the moment. Don't get me wrong, they're a very good team and definitely the best team in the league but the top teams below them have been awful this season. Forest, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Brighton have closed the gap between them and the 'top 6' and have been just as good, if not better, than City, Arsenal and Chelsea. The less said about Spurs and United, the better.

That's a good summary.
That performance at home though was the embodiement of PL physicality, and more or less how I expect these english teams that are looking to close the gap with the historic top PL teams to play in european competitions. We'll see what Villa bring to the table.
