This could just be the beginning of our decline

That was a depressing read. How can someone be so miserable . No iota of slight optimism to even balance out the misery. I think you need to just take a break from football.

Oh and in previous years since 2013 our CL presence gave us truly world class managers in their prime and players who won us PL and CL trophies. Now we might not be in it we will miss out on all those legendary people. Such a shame.
If United’s next few years is devoid of “legendary people” I, for one, will be delighted.

It is most likely that we will now not find a way into the Champions League. Europa league is by no means certain.

We are looking for a 'world class' manger / coach - but which world class manager would want to take on a team that isn't in the Champions League and has no realistic chance of winning its domestic league in the foreseeable future ? Going to a club that isn't going to be competitive is going to hurt their marketability.

With the lack of Champions League it is likely that a number of our more high profile players , even if some are some of the older ones will move on; Ronaldo, Cavani, Pogba - no matter how you see their value it doesn't send a positive message to those 'left behind' and any manager considering coming to OT.

Similarly with the difficulty we are probably going to experience with recruiting a top manger, we can expect the same difficulty in attracting the very best bright young players. For players in their late teens or early twenties there have to be at least 4 or 5 clubs that seem more attractive than we do. Those playing Champions League football, and though I hate to say it even Tottenham. Imagine visiting a run down OT and a run down Carrington and then going to London and seeing Tottenham shiny new stadium and top of the line training facilities. It also quite feasible that London holds more of a draw for young superstars than Manchester does unless you are going into a team that is going to compete seriously for the big trophies in the next couple of years.

Clearly not being competitive nor attractive to a top coach, nor attractive to top players with then have a compounding effect one on the other where we could finish up with a bang average manager with bang average players - despite us massively overpaying to recruit and keep them.

As bad as it has been for the last decade I think that there is possibly much worse to come.

Are you Professor Ferguson with another overly pessimistic forecast?

Don’t know what this means but never mind.
I thought it was obvious :)

I’m looking forward to a time when we can enjoy United in the present, rather than a legendary past. And carrying on as we have been in recent years, which is what I’d assumed you were mocking, isn’t going to achieve that. Maybe a bit of enforced change will though.

Huh? I meant that we haven’t had any legends in almost a decade as we hardly won anything. It didn’t matter if we were in the CL or not, we were still crap and signed overpaid players. The managers were also not good, regardless of our CL status. So no idea why it’s all doom now if we are not in CL (in terms of players or managers joining).
Now if we don’t have any legends (true legends, not the clowns we have had since 2013) in the next few years either then this would again mean that we are hardly winning anything.
Don’t know what’s good about that.

You're wrong on all counts.

It doesn't really matter where we end up this season, we fecked up a lot in the past while playing in the CL and spending a lot. Our progress in the future will start the moment we start making the correct footballing decisions, after that it could be actually faster than most people would expect. If you have a good football set up and the money to back it, you'll be up there with the rest.

Were Liverpool in champions league when Klopp came in?

I like these posts.

Have you forgotten we have missed out on CL several times the past decade?

Have you forgotten we have missed out on CL several times the past decade?

No I've not forgotten. But we got some of "the best' coaches as I guess they thought there was still a spart to re-ignite. Now the embers are well and truly going out will the 'top coaches' be as keen to join us ?

I agree that the chance of us getting worse is far bigger than us getting better, 100%.

This could just be the middle of the beginning of the end of our decline. We could end up in the conference.

Not sure if the OP’s been paying attention but we’ve missed the UCL at least a couple of times post SAF - and we’ve generally been “ok” in terms of attracting “top” talent and managers. The problem lies within attracting the right manager and talent though, which has been our recent downfall. Here’s hoping!

Also, one can only hope that some of these overpaid feckers mentioned in the OP end up leaving due to a lack of UCL, amongst other things. We need a big squad overhaul as half these bastards don’t seem to care.

CL isn’t the be all and end all... we are so far off the top 5/6 teams one year without it isn’t the end of the world.

Oh don’t get me wrong - having legends is great. But what’s been so sad about the last 10 years (almost) is that we’ve had to be constantly reminded about the legends of the past because recently we’ve been inundated with clowns.

If we get good again and, what’s more, continue to be good we won’t be in such need to worship the past because we’ll be enjoying the present.

Jesus Christ Stig, your favourite player must be Mata....

I'm surprised with how shit the sport has become people are still so heavily invested. Truth is unless some drastic change happens the two most hated teams around us will continue to dominate. We had our era of absolute domination ourselves better to just accept that and move on, as I said, the sport has become far too shady and corrupt for me to even bother anymore.

The player fees and wages are sickening and most of the new generation of players are spoilt drama queens. If you go back just 15 years it's like you are watching a different sport.

If we hire Poch then sadly I think the OP could be right. I won't have much optimism for our future.

The reasons provided by the OP is nothing we have not heard before countless times.

This is not the first time the club has failed to qualify for the CL and we are already in decline, not just beginning the decline.

I think you're missing out the new rules for the CL. We're basically guaranteed a CL spot if we do well in the years we're in the EL.

Glazers have that bag secured while the fans will be watching us fall further behind Liverpool, City and (probably) Newcastle. But truth hurts, so it'll take another 10 years for some to admit it.

It could, but it also, things might finally turn for better (I posted this in newbies yesterday)

It’s gotten really difficult to stay positive about United as the years go by, no premier league trophy in a decade, no trophies at all since 2017, another clear out is needed, the way this season panned out after what seemed to be one of the best bit of business we’ve done in ages. It’s grim currently, and that can’t be denied.

With that being said, let’s look at the positive, and why we should have more positivity and excitement for next season.

1. Ed’s gone.. He was one of the biggest reasons for our failures in my opinion, and no need to go in details why he was such a failure.

2. Arnold seems like he will delegate football duties to football people (if reports are obviously, but we don’t a reason to believe otherwise so far).

3. It seems like we are actually hiring football people, starting with John (finally a DOF!), Ralf, etc, so maybe we finally turning into a football club.

4. A lot of deadwood will be cleared out after this season wether it’s because they’re out of contract or hopefully some will get sold.

5. We are getting a new manager! Throughout the whole Ole tenure, our standards dropped (consciously and subconsciously). The lack of coaching and relying on moments of genius hurt us, we will some some great benefits with a good coach, I think the squad is better than what we are seeing now.

I personally am very excited for next season, I just hope the board make the right decision on the new manager, I know it’s hard to trust the board based on all the bad decisions they’ve made since saf retired, but there have been some changes, so we will see now it’ll turn out, and now that Ed is gone.

After reading in OPs sentiments, I'm off to offload my club shares before it further declines.

It is not like it's the first time we missed on playing in the CL, LVG was hired after Moyes failed to qualify, Mourinho was appointed after LVG finished 5th so I don't think that is the reason why a top manager wouldn't come.
As for players if we give them big wages, players will want to come here, I'm sure of that.

Beginning? I say we are already the new Milan of the footballing world. Like to think we are big but pretty much irrelevant when it comes to contending any of the real prizes of top tier football.

Not my style to give up. I'm going to enjoy the battle back. I know it sucks, I feel it too, but it will make the comeback even better.
