Thiago Alcantara | Signed for Bayern Munich

According to 'reports' I thought he was quite a low earner, as far as top footballers go, and our £90k-ish p/w offer was effectively tripling his current pay.

He's not a top footballer though. He's a talented youngster who could possibly be one of the best midfielders around in a few years. He'll get his €7m a year deal at some point.

What do people think Plan B is? No strong rumours to anyone else (in terms of CM) at the moment.

Strootman is the only central-midfielder we've really been linked with I think, though there is that young midfielder at Sevilla that seems to be going cheap.

Can we turn either of the two centre-backs we're apparently in for into the next Phil Jones?

Thiago would be the ultimate dream (and really there's still as much chance as there was this morning, despite the tweet), but it seems we've been at least trying to sign him - which is an improvement on recent transfer windows.

I'd consider him in the same boat as Hazard and Lucas Moura, who are relatively unproven, but are still earning solid wedge due to their talent ant potential.

Posters on the Barca forum think this is still in the balance, whereas the posters here seem to think he's definitely staying. I think there's pessimism on both sides.

One thing you can certainly say about the pic is that it's signalling the end game to this saga. You can't post something like that unless you know your future is on the verge of being confirmed one way or the other. This one definitely won't drag through the entire summer.

Interesting. So what do you make of his tweets then?

He knows the club and he may indeed be a neighbor of the Alcantaras. Still, being a neighbor doesn't necessarily make you a source - it can also make you a shill, even unwittingly

Looking back on his tweets he seems to refer to the club as 'Barça' not Barcelona

Because one clearly means the city while the other the club

To me he clearly states that he loves the city - why else that photo ? Not that I think we will get him anyway...

of late we have been quite poor closing deals on foreign players....we have failed to clinch deals for Moura, Hazard and now it looks the same has happened with Thiago.

One thing is certain - Barca board will waste no time in announcing any positive news on Thiago, due to intense pressure they are under from fans. We can be certain Thiago has not signed a contract or decided to stay with with Barca this evening.

Like Montserrat Caballé, in a famous duet with Freddie Mercury?
I remember waiting in an ante room to the boardroom in a bank In St Petersburg ahead of a meeting to hear whether we'd won a $$$M tender. The secretaries had a Russian classical radio station playing and the fat lady started on an aria... some of my colleagues were not amused as I pointed this out.

Going back to the food point, climate must be a genuine factor in players' minds... I'm afraid Thiago won't get many clones of that photo if he comes to live in mcr. Reminds me of those photos of Ronaldinho's pad after he turned us down.

Meh, I really think it's all about the money/trophies/playing time.

At the end of the day for the money they get they are going to have a pretty fecking sweet time of it in manchester.

You are of little faith. He just said he love the city of Barcelona, and he'll miss it for the next 10/12 years he'll be playing for Manchester United.

Not much you can do if the player is money oriented and there are richer clubs sniffing around. Different case with Thiago, it's just very hard to get him away from Barcelona.

I don't know much about the Hazard deal, but Leonardo and Thiago Silva was one of the biggest reasons for Lucas going to PSG, wasn't it?

Pics?

This is ultimate optimism, and I am a grand optimist.

IT IS MORE ON THAN EVER!

I do think the post probably makes the neutral think he's leaning at staying as a result of the pic. I can see that. To go to a city like Manchester, the pull would have to be compelling to leave your city, club, fans, weather, youth etc. To leave, he'd really have to want to due to playing time. If you're Thiago, you know nowhere has else the things he likes, including chances at trophies, money & glory with the NT except playing time. Is he wired to value playing time over all else? He's ambitious, I don't think anyone would disagree but is he willing to part with the combo he has now? I'd say maybe there's a lean towards staying but like Sultan I don't think anything is definitive yet

Nothing is confirmed. I have seen too many false dawns with United and signing midfielders. If it happens great, if not there's always Fellaini.

If this deal really fails, we can do worse than going for Olver Torres, right?

Anyway, I don't think that much has happened and that tweet could easily mean anything, or nothing.

Loving the level of analysis that is going into this Instagram tweet. Some higher order muppetry.

Don't do this to yourself. We'll sign Fellaini and Baines and that'll be the summer.

The only link with Fellaini is from Caf's antimuppets. Torres could be a great player so I would be glad to sign him if we fail on Thiago and we can't go for another great one (like Gundogan or probably Marchisio).

I've got SSN on (granted on mute) and I haven't looked up once and saw anything to do with transfers or more specifically Thiago
