Would make perfect sense if we were to get a big offer for Pogba's, as I think Thiago is more suited to our needs with his decision-making, intelligence and playmaking abilities.

With van de Beek coming in, it does seem overkill unless one or two central midfielders are leaving. That said, if you have the chance to sign a world-class player at a discounted price, I think you should generally take it. He'd be our best midfielder and would improve our possession play a lot.
Isn’t Thiago a DM for Bayern though? So could we not see Thiago & Pogba together, with Bruno ahead of them & VDB as squad depth with Matic, Fred & McTominay? I suppose one of those could leave. For me McTominay is the weakest player, but I think Fred is far more likely to be sold.

The reliable @JanAageFjortoft on this story, speaking with @LaurensJulien on ESPN

“Yes, Man Utd want Thiago. That is absolutely true. They are still in the market for him. Everybody thinks it will be Liverpool, but we thought that about Timo Werner and now he’s wearing blue.”

God I hope Romano doesn't go and retweet this or even say anything about it because then will start to find it really hard to not get invested in true 2013 style all over again

I don't think there's an aspect of the game in which Matic, Fred or McT (our current DMs) are superior, so it's weird to see so many up in arms.

With a midfield like that, I'd expect the other team to be doing most of the chasing tbh.
With our fullbacks sitting deep we'd struggle to advance play and would be at the mercy of teams who are good at applying high pressure. That's without mentioning our CBs who aren't suited to playing a high-line which would see us sitting deep.

Agreed, Fred is a versatile player I'd love to have around, it's Pereira, Mata and Lingard who need to be shifted out

Completely agree but then Fred is the only one of them mentioned that plays Thiago's kind of role

Or even Pogba if someone wants to pay us Thiago+Sancho-enabling money...

We rarely make significant sums that way, least of all this summer, when clubs are mostly being cautious until the financial hit from COVID-19 is known.

Who do you propose that we sell and how much do you expect them to fetch in this climate?

With buying players, it doesn't mean you pay the figure all up front. Like a poster suggested earlier, we can spend sums this year, taking advantage of Covid & then spend little the following year.

I somehow have: Thiago, VDB, Upamecano and Sancho in my head today as this summers transfer window for United.

The Muppet in me is feeling that as a real possibility with some outs.

Jesus don't get my hopes up like that because would involve selling Pereira, Lingard, Smalling, Dalot, Rojo & Romero before end of the window which looks way too much to ask

Smalling, Lingard, Romero I think are quite easy to move on, it's the others that are difficult, Jones I think will find suitors too.

Aside from the reports linking us to Thiago, Mark Ogden released an article today regarding Liverpool's pursuit of Thiago and said that there's no chance Thiago will join Liverpool unless Wijnaldum is sold. He also says that although there's no agreement for a new contract with Wijnaldum, the player isn't pushing to leave and the club are happy for him to stay. The only thing I can see changing that is Barcelona and Koeman coming in for him given they have just sold Rakitic and Vidal seems to be pushed for a sale too.

This guy is really unreliable. Was confirming Sancho about a month ago & has called Thiago to Liverpool a done deal in the past also. He doesn’t really know anything.

It's unlike him to be suggesting we can actually get someone though!
Normally it's "yeah they want him, but not happening"

Should go out and get him before Liverpool get the chance to consider selling Wijnaldum

Seems a bit bizarre Liverpool, after their recent success can't boot a sub 30m transfer fee into such a seemingly top class player, without having to sell

Seems like Allyson and VVD were huge mortgage buys. They have certainly paid off, but there is very little cash on balance sheet now after all repayments and COVID-19 losses.

Surely we cannot make this happen like Chelsea did with Werner can we?

If that's the case they'll really be struggling in a few years.

Perhaps Klopp is hoping Thiago will push for a move and take a pay-cut or something along those lines if that's how dire it is for Liverpool.

The people who own Liverpool are businessmen again, if it isn't 'smart business' they won't buy, right now they are Champions, they probably don't feel they need investment when they do.

Maybe a reason they wanted to Furlough too.

Do you think he would take a pay-cut?

Seems genuine that Liverpool can’t fund him without a like for like sale. So it could easily happen, assuming we have the cash after a Sancho deal. Makes sense why we are desperately trying to reduce Sancho fee, where shaving £10m or delayed payment scheme is the key to allowing for other deals.

I ain’t buying into this unless Romano tweets something similar from his own source. Even Falk is a suspect as he’s a mouthpiece for Bayern and he’ll do what Bayern tells him to do, and that’s by using our name to speed up the deal from the dippers

I think Thiago would want more pay, he's in the prime years of his career and one of the best midfielders in the world, he'd never take a pay-cut.

I think Liverpool can't afford his wages and a 30M fee.

A player on 150k a week is on around 7.5M a year, thats approaching 40M before you are even talking about agent fees, and a signing on bonus.

Liverpool I really don't think can pull off Thiago, they couldn't sign Werner, in total the outlay for someone like Thiago would be 50M with all fees, its really not as cheap as just the fee which many people just see, Liverpool will also be looking to renew some of the players in their prime, and they'll be requiring loyalty bonuses in their contracts too.

In the midst of a second wave there's a reason why Liverpool aren't in the market, the board I'm assuming are thinking they won the league comfortably so they don't need additions.

I fully expect Liverpool to finish behind City and Chelsea next year given their lack of depth, and how strong Chelsea are now, Thiago Silva for Chelsea is a big signing in terms of defensive leadership too.

It's quite bizarre if it's really a money problem considering we haven't made any significant transfers in two years. I get that with the addition of Thiago, we might have to let one the other midfielders go because of playing time, but money, really.. I suppose it makes kind of sense since FSG haven't ever really been splashing the cash.

Would be immense if we could sign Thiago, Donny & Sancho, yes I realise that we would still need a CB but maybe Utd think that Axel & Eric could finally stay fit next season and then go and get Upamecano for his release clause next summer

I wondered, when you were skimping around for some average Norwich full back, and wouldn't go above 10m!

Quite a few of their fans are thinking similarly on RAWK.
A couple of smug ones still cling to them having the best player in every position though.

History tells us you buy when you're strong, or you go backwards.
However, they totally laughed at that rule last year.

You might have to pay the entire fee up front - it varies from deal to deal.

McTominay should be the one to go on loan.

Think Ole sees McT as more of a box to box than Fred, though, and the fact that he can sometimes pop up with a goal makes him more suited to that.

That would potentially mean:

10- Bruno/VdB
8 - Pogba/McTominay
6 - Thiago/Matic

That would be perfect, in my opinion, with Matic getting replaced the season after next.

It would be a shock if Chelsea finished above Liv and I would think you could get great odds on that.

Also something dramatic would have to happen for City to finish above Liv.

I can’t see it at all. But I hope you are right and it will likely mean we are challenging for the title ourselves.
