Film There Will Be Blood - Is it the best movie ever made?

This, Jesse James and No Country were all released in the same year. All 3 were incredible neo / revisionist Westerns in their own right. No Country and There Will Be Blood got the recognition at the Oscars, but I also have a big soft spot for Jesse James.
Oh wow, didn't realise No Country was released that year. That's 3 of my post 2000 favourite films!

No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were actually filmed close to each other. Filming for No Country For Old Men actually had to be postponed when the There Will Be Blood scene with the burning derrick was filmed, as the wind carried the smoke to their set and basically rendered filming outside impossible.

I agree. I also find it strange to criticise it as "hammy" considering he spends the first half hour not speaking, then through most of the film is relatively understated. He has some explosions, which are necessary for the progression of the story and his character.

It's a wonderful film and has aged well. Paul Dano is also great in it (as he usually is). I think it was released the same year as The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford, which I prefer, but it's a great film.

Loved that film, quite unknown

Anyway, it's art, there should not be that best movie ever thing.
I like the movie thought

Yeah it's not often mentioned in lists or anything, but it's a gorgeous, poetic film elevated by wonderful performances, score and photography. It's hypnotic.

Yea The Assassination of Jesse James was brilliant. Hes a very good director too Andrew Dominik

Well for many might have been deemed slow, I guess. I hate that term in films.
Anyway, fantastic film on every aspect, everyone is great in it too

This is the same as folks crying out how wonderful Oppenheimer is. For me it was like watching paint dry. American Historical dramas including Gone with the Wind are dull as hell.

It's a great movie with terrific performances from both Day-Lewis and Dano. Not sure I'd elevate it to anywhere near best ever, though.

Yes the best score out of the three is Jesse James. Was all done by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. If you loved the score for Jesse James, check out The Proposition by John Hillcoat. It’s an Australian Western - another incredible movie but the score was also done by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis and it’s superb.

I thought Jonny Greenwood’s score for TWbB should’ve been in contention for best score that year, but it had bits from another composition of his.

Also will add Shawshank runtime is 2h 20 mins which is long but not unreasonable and has tone where there are funny moments throughout. Oppenheimer is 3 hours of grim and depressing biopic, though I admit well acted.

In all fairness, it was a very heavy subject.

I thought it's pacing was fairly good and didn't feel like 3 hours.

Because it is ridiculously long and depressing. Give me Shawshank or Forest Gump any day, at least you come out with your spirits lifted.

Not every movie, book should lift our spirtis...Forrest Gump BTW, it's almost as fake and manipulative as Patch Adams, yet a better film than Patch.

Shawshank it's indeed a well rounded movie, to call it the best ever it's a bit of a stretch given it lacks ambition and in a world with so many extraordinary filmakers, yet a very fine and entertaining movie.

Oh absolutely but if it isn’t uplifting at least make it shorter or add some suspense. No Country for Old Men for example is a great film and not overly long and dull

So is There Will Be Blood. The greatest film of all time.

Such a great title too.

Great movie but I wouldn't put it in my personal top 20. It's not a movie I've thought about a lot or talked about a lot with friends.

Good but somewhat overrated movie featuring two greedy assholes being exploitative but in the end quietly realizing they’re pathetic at the cost of getting everything they wanted.

Fun related aside, one of my old screen names when I played Counter Strike: Source regularly back in 2008 was ‘Bastard from a basket’

Loved this movie when it came out, still do, and don't think PTA has come close to this level since.

As for 'best movie ever', impossible to answer because you'd need to define what a 'best movie ever' should be and I don't think that's easy.

Dano wasn't supposed to play both brothers originally. Would've been a different movie with another actor.

The best thing about this movie was that it made an incredible answer to the question "If you could call your penis a movie name, what would it be"?

Depends on what you want from a movie really, that type of movie for me would never be the greatest. For me it's something like Terminator 2.
I'm between Terminator 1 and 2. Like you said, all about personal taste but in what I look for in terms of storyline, action, romance (1st), sci-fi, affects, them 2 for me. I'd also add Brad Fiedel doing the soundtrack for both films, absolutely incredible
