Television The Witcher | Netflix | There are book spoilers here

He was holding it all together. He would have to correct people on how things were supposed to go, and some of the writers didn’t even like the lore of the books and games. The latter bit according to one of the writers - the guy working on the X-men animated reboot.

This is a critical blow for more reasons than just his star power.

Yeah, Death Knell, finally got around to reading The Witcher over the last few months and they really made (unnecessarily) massive changes that didn't really pay off. I don't think the books are top rank by any means, would put them around The Black Company by Glenn Cook level, a bit dated but solid. Constant issue with fantasy adaptations, pay for the right for an IP wanting the name recognition and inbuilt audience that they bring but rankle at the expectation that an adaptation should be somewhat true to source material.

Took me sometime to get used to the Spartacus lead change
This one might be tougher given we would have had 3 seasons of cavill

 wtf they’re just changing the lead actor and expecting that to go well?

He absolutely loved the Witcher, both the games and the books. He wouldn't give this up for some other shows, this role was a dream for him.

Wouldn't be surprised if he isn't happy about the direction of the show, so i haven't the biggest hope for S3 anymore.

Get Will Smith for Dandelion and Peter Dinklage for Vesemir.

Yen can stay, but Ciri needs to be played by Jackie Chan.

That's so so shit. Trying not to read much of thread as only watched show. But that sucks. The other half who has read the books says he is brilliant as Geralt.

Well, the guy who is running the xmen 97show said that when he was in the Witcher writers room, the other people in the room not only didn’t like the Witcher but actively mocked it. Games, books, the lot. They hated it. So with that in mind, it’s more than understandable that Cavill would walk. He loves it, is taking it seriously and he’s surrounded by cnuts who hate it and working against it being what it’s supposed to be.

I was OK with that given the circumstances. It almost felt bad to complain about it.

This seems more like the lead actor just lost interest in the show.

Apparently. Its even more ridiculous considering he's the shows biggest star, the character the show is named after and the main reason most of the fans are still watching.

He also seems to be the only one at the show who could balance out the writers disdain for the source material.

Rich Evans from RedLetterMedia would be wonderful Dijkstra.

I was listening to Rich Evans as I read this.

Ahh gutted by this news. I genuinely loved season 1 and 2 of yeh Witcher more than pretty much anything in recent years and Cavill was a huge part of that. Oh well at least I can enjoy season three.

The show itself was average and he was easily the best thing about it. I'm assuming S3 was already filmed otherwise surely they'd have just had that as the last instead of re casting.

Thought he was such a wooden actor until Geralt, he really embodied how I think many imagined that role. Seems weird he’d leave something he clearly loves but I guess 3 seasons is a fair stint.

That is shit news
It really, really is. I genuinely enjoyed him as Geralt, the fact he loves the source material makes me so concerned for the direction S3 takes.

No point in a season 4 tbh. If season 3 is another hit then it will just completely ruin the legacy of the show have a different actor as the lead for the next season.

If that it he sort of thing that troubles your mind, you should have been well concerned 1-2 episodes into the second season already. There was a severe drop in everything, especially storytelling. After watching the season, my gf said that it looked like the creators were ruining it on purpose.

Cavill was one of the last redeeming qualities and he suggested several times that he is not happy with the way the story is going. While him being confirmed as Superman might have nudged things, I don't think that is the reason he is leaving. He said several times that he is committed to the full multiple year plan for the show as long as they have good stories to tell.

Have to feel a bit sorry for him (for the nerd in him really). He is an actor who got to play the most iconic characters he probably dreamt of playing for decades just to see them crumble regardless of his performances.

It's just a shame. Had so much potential with Henry and if the third season won't be quiet good, the fans won't give him a fair chance.

Ah feck it. Show's gone. What a bunch of morons. He made a really good Geralt.

Season two was excellent though.

Really disappointing news, and then hearing about writers not liking the source material doesn't give me much hope. You would think if you didn't like the source material, you wouldn't work as a writer for a tv adaption of it...

Hopefully we are all wrong, and the show stays good. Though I can't help but think that they should have just wrote Geralt into the background and followed Yen/Ciri more, though even that would be odd. Having someone else trying to step into the character is just a massive risk.

Anyone I know who’s read the books hates the show and most people who haven’t think the show is decent at best. It should have been so much better than it was but it always looked cheap and the dialogue and acting were so hammy. Cavill was great though.

If the writers don't like the source material, why the hell did they take the project up in the first place? It's the same with WoT where they said they hate how Rand is written. Why bother, then? To "modernize" the characters and cash in on today's polarization? Anyways, if you like this, i see no reason to stop enjoying it. Cavill had already, in S2, become one of the supporting cast. They might as well have called it the Ciri and Yennefer show.

Well, guess that's the end of The Witcher.

Huh? I've been following it closely, I don't think this has happened. The showrunner might be a hack fraud, but he's a massive Wheel of Time fan.

I can't remember the news site, but i recall that i read, when they were discussing how/when they were going to shoot S2, that the writers didn't like Rand's development in books 2 and 3. And i dread to think what could have happened if the showrunner didn't fancy Jordan's work. First season of WoT was utter garbage.

I very much doubt that this is because Cavill was disappointed in the writing. It would be trivially easy to change the writers to some he's happier with instead of recasting the role. Recasting the lead role is rarely done in Hollywood anymore, it's a catastrophe that everyone will work hard to avoid.

I gave up on season 2 halfway through or something, when it became so hilariously shite I couldn't take it anymore. So I don't really care.

It did make me a fan of Cavill though, who did what he could to keep his character respectable with such utter garbage tier writing around him.

I am actually surprised Netflix didn't just cancel. They are usually quick to cancel a series and move on to something else. They are mostly about quantity of material and just dump a show if it is getting too complicated. So if they are doing this expect 4th season to be the last unless its somehow a huge hit again after Liam.

Rumors are he's going to House of The Dragon.
Nah that's just people fancasting him for the billionth time as every targaryen or baratheon ever and now they're trying to make him a Stark. Just bs.

The fact that the guy who specifically sought out this role, who is a massive fan of this series decided to leave is very telling, together with the news that some of the writers actively disliked and mocked the books and games... yikes.
