Gaming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I found the early combat in HZD fun too though. Sneaking about and gaming enemies out one by one, and then mopping up the dregs at the end.

Obviously more challenging and fun later, but still very good early too.

HZD the better game for me.
Horizon was a really good game but it's a level below the top tier games for me. Combat was better than that of the Witcher's. But in every other aspect - story, world, characters, sound track, exploration, gear/items, RPG mechanics, depth/scale etc it wasn't as good.

I actually found the story of Horizon to be slightly disappointing - it never pulled me in, by the last fag I was just trying to get through it It's strength for me laid in its design and combat.

Interesting. I was thinking about what people have said about the world feeling "wooden", my interpretation of it is "desolate" and I really like that about it. It's big and lonely and perfectly in keeping with the story.

And the story, as i said before, is brilliant, for me. The only game I've played in recent years with one as good is Nier Automata. But I guess everyone will have their own opinion about the quality of a story, be that in a book, a film or a game.

I would say what you said there about The Witcher. I enjoyed it, but I never really get what all the fuss is about. The story is fine, but it's pretty generic really. The world is really interesting, I'll give it that. I'm going to replay it soon, after I've finished the books. But it's not in the top 5 games I've played on the ps4.

Cannot agree with any of this tbf... Up there in the gotg conversation for me, with GoW and Astro Bot.

Funny, because I’m just now getting around to HZD and I’m struggling to find the urge to finish it. Though I doubt I’d have put TW3 into the all-time-great tier without the ability to mod it as I saw fit.

RDR2 suffers similarly from combat mechanics holding it back but with the right tweaks once it gets to PC it could get into legendary territory.

Replaying this. Again. This time on a powerful PC with a shit ton of mods, mostly graphical mods. Playing it in 4k/60fps with the super turbo lighting mod is breathtaking, plus the 4k texture mod.

The writing is so fecking good also. Just everything is lovingly and intricately woven together. I fecking love this game.

When you get to Skellige it's going to look amazing.

It looks class even if the Ulster accents had me scratching my head when I first went there. Surely I could get a gig as a voice artist for Witcher 4?
Kind of a perk of not being a native English speaker - I shudder at the thought of playing an epic RPG and then meet people type-cast for their regional German accents

Took me until the Bloody Baron to be sold. Liking it now. Still don't know shit about oils, potions etc.

I play Gwent at every opportunity I can. Fun game but it takes a bit from the enjoyment knowing you beat a computer and not a person.

Ignore the oils and potions, they are pointless for you now anyway.

And Gwent is great, perhaps my favourite part :)

For me it was around the time of the bloody baron quest, so a good few hours.

As for all the tedious stuff, you don't have to do any of it at all. In fact I'd recommend not bothering with the oils/perks/crafting too much after the early game (unless you have to for certain enemies), as it all becomes way to trivial anyway.

Why trivial?

Why trivial?

Because the game is way too easy, and they don't really add anything to it either. Ditto for the crafting.

I mean if you want to dabble in them, then go for it. But I do highly advise people don't go too over the top with that stuff or spending the skill points, as it does take fun out of the game in the long run.

Did you focus on main quests of all of it?

What do you mean?

There's an actual Gwent game out where you can play other people. I think it's free, I got it free ages ago and they keep updating it although I've not played it in ages. There's also a paid version with a single player quest too.

Oils and potions can save you a ton of hassle in fights. Like throwing a poison bomb then drinking the potion that lets poison heal you, so you're healing as you fight while they are taking damage. They give you a bunch of options and can enhance your play style. You just need to mix the right ingredients to make them which is simple enough and then you always have them, they refill every time you rest.

Oils are actually deceptively simple, whatever monster you're hunting or expecting to face just go into the bestiary to that monster and it tells you which oil to use and which bomb or sign works best. Apply that to your silver sword and voila, extra damage. It's fairly self explanatory once you get used to it. It's best to always have Hanged Man's Venom on your steel sword as it does extra damage to humans, elves and dwarves.

Cheers. When does the oil wear off? Is it based on time or hits?

Hits, there's a counter for it. I know there's definitely a counter in the menu if you look at whichever sword the oil is on it will tell you how many hits you have left. I think there's one on the screen too below the health bar when the sword is drawn.

Any advice if I go on a mission way above my level? I got ambushed by dwarfs in an alley.

Depends how far above you're level. If they have a red skull above them that means they are way above and you're probably doing so little damage that it's barely worth it.

Otherwise, crowd control and isolation. Don't let any of them get behind you or you're fecked. Keep your Quen up. Use bombs for crowd control like the one that freezes them and the poison one. Then duck, weave, block and strike when you have the chance.

I was massively under levelled for this one. Queen and patience and it’s still quite easy.

Got it on the second attempt. Starting to realize the value of oils.

This game is freaking addicting. Did the high stakes gwent touro yesterday.

That must be a common ambush then, I thought I'd screwed up on my first playthrough, but managed to find a bug during the battle where they couldn't attack me if I stood in a certain area and then spent the next 30mins using my crossbow

Just bought the potion that clears your ability point selections.

Any advice? Thinking of going all out for combat (fast attack), signs (Quen and the one that hypnotizes)

I had a lot of fun using a bombs and signs focused build in my second play through as opposed to the straightforward fast attack/Quen build my first time, but both can be effective.

It's a matter of whether you want to be an action hero or a battlemage, but always the sign that opens dialogue options regardless.

So can someone help me out? Tried google but can't find an answer. Is there a way to switch my quen from a protective to active shield? As in I have both the exploding shield and active shield in my character base. Can I only have one or is there a way for me to select which one a want as I require it?

To use the active shield, hold down the button. You won't be able to roll or run around. Once it's depleted, it will explode.

The 'active shield' ability should only be relevant when you hold down your casting button (the shield appears as a bubble around you). If you just press the button once, you are shielded with the normal quen and boni from your other relevant talents.

Sound for the reply guys. Does that mean I can only have one upgrade of each sign? As in at the moment I have exploding shield and active shield but only one of them can actually be used?

Edit: one upgrade allowed per 'move'?

Well the active shield is an alternative mode of the sign. I do think some talents do not affect both modes, but I'm not completely sure.

Been slowly playing through this again. I’d picked up the Cat and Ursine armour previously but the Wolves armour is just .

I always kinda liked the armour you start with as well.

Thanks man. Found my answer, when I hold down L2 it's an active shield which then explodes when stamina runs out so upgrades apparently don't override each other although I imagine you can't have all the quen upgrades at one time or anything like that.

Im doing a replay now after two years of my first playthrought. I must say I'm enjoying it a lot, and I thought I wouldn't. Obviously the first time is very special but I'm still finding it great and the story captivating.

I must say the love triangle is awesomely done and even though I'm not fond of those kind of plots in movies or TV series, this one is well executed and i think probably is the main reason why this is my favourite rpg ever.

Don't make the same mistake I made and actually commit to both though... Sad times. :(

I couldn't decide between Triss and Yennifer on my first playthrough and got THAT scene. I anticipated having to make a choice at some later point but alas it was decided for me in the cruellest way. I still get mad at it because I got a perfect ending otherwise and without having to look up the different endings and what you have to do to get them.

RE the books, I really enjoyed the first two and flew through them both. But I am finding Baptism of Fire harder work, I am near the end but havent enjoyed it as much as the others. Think once this is done Ill take a little break and read something else.

HZD's story is much better than TW3.
I think they're both going for something different. In HZD it's the overarching story and gradual discovery of the central mystery that's really well done. The characters themselves are not that great in my opinion. In TW3 the overarching plot is just kind of there but its characters are a lot more developed and it's in all the little, self-contained stories throughout the world that the game really shines.

The characters in HZD are really quite dull imo though the world is beautiful and the combat is great. It's a great game in it's own right but i wasn't hooked by it's story.

What really hooked me in the Witcher was how brutal and cold the world seemed and a certain quest early on in the game (the Bloody Baron) that i'd never seen done so well before in this medium for such a dark subject matter. Obviously games have come a long way and there's been great stories before the Witcher that were sophisticated and intelligent (MGS series) or just great fun and engaging (the FF series) but the side quests and some main plot points in the Witcher were something I hadn't experienced before. I'd literally go away from some decisions and their consequences thinking oh my god,am I'm a horrible person for this?

I'm tempted to go back to it after a few years or so but the sheer scale of time to do it all and the DLC (which i probably enjoyed even more than the main story) puts me off a bit. I never got the hang of Gwent, never got the platinum, and couldn't get a good romance ending. So there is stuff to do.
