Television The Wire

I just realized that I am more likely to watch and enjoy a new show if it has Wire alum in it.
I enjoyed Bosch recently and it had Marlo Stanfield. I was randomly watching a comedy show House of Lies that had Mayor Royce in it.
And today I just started watching Luther with Stringer Bell after being unable to get into Sharp Objects and some other new HBO show I can't even remember.

I remember seeing smooth Lester Freamon in John Wick that other day

You're American, right? What kind of reputation does Baltimore have in the US?

Honestly mate, read David Simon's books. They're a yearly reread for me. In one he spends a year living on the streets and another he works with the police. Both insanely good and help me (as an English man) undertand Baltimore.

Yep.

Every single time.

Wasn't it Daniels that was in John Wick? The hotel manager?

Yeah he is in it too. Freamon was staying in one of the rooms, John Wick left that female assassin tied up with him to look after, and she ended up killing him.

Just watched the Ant Man movie yesterday and there he was, good old Avon as a policeman.

Back onto Season 4, and if there was any doubt about who the coolest TV cop of all time is, well, there shouldn't be.

The delivery on that line is just so damn perfect.

Lester owns that season. I think this is one of my favorite scenes in the show:

I'm halfway through S4 just now after starting on this again after watching it last a couple of years back, it really is superb. The sheer number of excellent characters is amazing, the plots and arcs in it, the whole thing is just incredible. Season 5 was a bit of a let-down, but probably only in comparison to the previous four.
I've always rated this in terms of the quality of each series - 3,1,2,4,5. Having to pick out the best character isn't easy, but I have to go for Omar - his whole demeanour, one liners, his "moral code", everything. He is a bit of a "noble savage" really. Honourable mentions to McNulty, Slim Charles and Bunk, but way, way too many to mention. An also-ran episode or character in this show is still way above anyone or anything similar in the vast majority of other TV shows.
I love The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, but The Wire beats them both for me. To pick my favourite episode, well I wouldn't know where to start.

Not to be a nit-picker, as I know what you’re getting at, but I don’t think that’s what noble savage means.

From Wiki:

A noble savage is a literary stock character who embodies the concept of the indigene, outsider, wild human, an "other" who has not been "corrupted" by civilization, and therefore symbolizes humanity's innate goodness.

Omar may (sort of) have a purity to him, but he’s not an outsider who’s not been corrupted, he’s definitely borne out of the society he is in. The noble savage is someone who’s from outside the society that is being critiqued. He clearly shows that he’s a reflected individual by his society’s standards, what with his interest in Greek myths and the like. A savage he ain’t.

Actually, you are spot on, I knew what I wanted to say but used the wrong expression. Not nit picking at all, my choice of description was off.
I just meant he was a criminal with a code, robbed and shot people but not ordinary citizens, only those "in the game". I think I was trying to say his "savage" behaviour was only visited on those in the criminal world. He is also very intelligent and erudite with a kind heart and sense of humour.
The bit about only putting his gun on those in the criminal world is a bit like Chopper Read.

Yeah, I got where you were coming from, that’s why I called it a nit-pick ;)

Definitely hard to pick a better character from the show.

I'm surprised non-Aussies know about Chopper
I lived in Australia for a few years, Melbourne most of that time, so if I hadn't maybe I wouldn't be aware of him even now. Not long after I moved to Melbourne I went to my local library and just randomly picked out his first book from the shelves, read most of them since. I think a lot of his books are best sellers not just in Australia and the fact that Eric Bana played him in the movie probably garnered more attention for it than had it just been a more run of the mill actor.
RIP Mark, great character.

Rewatching this, and I'm enjoying it even more the second time.

Pity about Brother Mouzone though. Not a great character at all. Everything else is near perfect.

My favourite quote ever on the show is from Omar when him and his man bust the door in of the poker game. Marlo had just finally won a game against those sharks with a full house. Omar holding Marlo at gunpoint in a house full of criminals and he comes up with the greatest double entendre I've ever seen in a tv-show "I don't know about cards but, I think these 45's beat a full-house."

Thats some serious writing. Best show I've ever seen in my opinion.

Not great, but I like Baltimore. Mind you, I've only been to the Inner Harbor and Fells Point the several times I've been there. Great bars and seafood restaurants (especially blue crab), plus Camden Yards is a great place to catch a ball game.

What my second watch let me see was just how good the second series is. Like almost everyone else, I was kinda disappointed in the direction they went with it originally, but on a re-watch...? It's just as great as the rest of the show.

I'm with you on Brother. I was never a fan of him.

Yeah agree on the second season. I'm towards the end of the third so Marlo is getting big, but I often find myself to wanting to see how Nick and the rest of those guys are getting on.

"Money ain't got no owners, only spenders" in the same scene.

^ classic scene with classic lines.

IMO the best scene is probably the scene where D was teaching Wallace, Bodie and Poot about Chess.

I also love Omar's quote - 'heavy is the head that wears the crown.'

I mean I love the whole show and there are countless quotes and scenes.

Every time this gets bumped I want to watch it again.

Me too. Or at least talk about all of the great characters, lines and scenes. Whenever me and my brothers catch up we will inevitably get to talking about the Wire.

It's like the Simpsons in that we can talk about the same things over and over again and never get tired of it.

Yea definitely. We're about half way through a Sopranos rewatch at the moment. The Wire is next.
