Television The Wire

There isn't really anyone you could hate on that show(Well except the journalist). I disliked Bubbles at first but grew to like him
My top five though would be
1) Bodie
2) Slim
3) Omar
4)Chris
5)Michael

I'm not even sure how to get a top five but off top of my head

Omar
Brother Mouzone
Frank Sobotka
Bunk
Avon

But even then, there are so many amazing written characters its hard to even pick 10 or 15

@SqueakyWeasel

Been a week since you said you started S4, where you at? Mind blown, words escape you? ;P
I have to admit I looked at what was left (how many episodes) and started to get worried. So I left it for a few days and only watched my first few episodes yesterday. It's like having a big bag of sweets when you were a kid. You pig on them at first but when you start to run out you realise you have to take your time or you'll end up with an empty bag and a stomach ache.

Having said that I'm on Episode 4 already :).

So far: I really like the theme tune; don't like the new head of Major Crimes; loath the mayor but don't see Carcetti winning the race unless some explosive corruption is unearthed (and I'm not talking Clinton style exploits either); think Prez will win over the students in the end, à la "Blackboard Jungle" or a reverse "To Sir with Love"; the main kids characters come across a bit too clean to be from that neighbourhood (even given they are supposedly from the posher areas); Marlow is not as believable as B+B were; feel sorry for Bunk now he's lost his drinking buddy. All in all great stuff … again!

I don't care much for the out of synch singers in the theme song, myself. Probably my least favourite intro tune.

The kids are in the middle of that time where they lose their innocence and start facing the facts with regards to what their future is... I thought they were pretty well-presented as such. *shrugs*

Don't forget I haven't seen more than 4 shows (now 6) of this season … and that I have far superior musical taste

Hey, have you heard of the TV mimi-series "Show Me a Hero"? Mate of mine recommended it out of the blue. Turns out it's made by the same team as the Wire.

I've checked out all of Simon's projects, I think :) Show Me a Hero was not as captivating as The Wire, Generation Kill or Tremé, for me.

Bubbles is the best character on the show.

His journey bought me to tears.

Your opinion of him not change through season 4?
I thought he deserved a better death by a better man. But that's the grittiness of the show.
There might actually be more hated characters I've forgotten too. I wasn't a fan of snoop either. Probably more so than bodie tbf.

I don't know how anybody can hate Mr Entrapment. *shrug*

Valcheck is high up... Mayor Royce was a fecking slimeball, and Clay Davis was worse still. Ziggy was a fecking idiot, even if he was more of a tragic figure in the end.

Yes he was. But i liked the character. Funny too.

Levy and Templeton deserve to be added to this. Fecking snakes.

Yeah these two, Cheese, Officer Walker, that politician Narine something.

I liked characters like Valchek and especially Clay Davis, obviously they're scum but great characters that really add a lot.

I was hoping someone would shoot Clay Davis square in the head before the series ended but politicians never usually get whats coming to them so that would be unrealistic.

I didn't even realise. Cheers.
I also liked the port guys including both ziggy and Frank.

Fair enough lads.

My most hated are.
Valchek.
Avon.
Stringer.
Bodie.
Cheese.
The worst character. Meth should stick to rapping.

Top 5:
Freamon
Bunk
Chris n Snoop
Bodie
Bubbles

I like Mike too, too bad his arc was a bit short.
Edit: Marlo is good too but the actor is too one dimensional

Omar, Freamon and Bunk are the best written characters IMO.

I liked Davis and Valchek too. Both are corrupt as feck but so good at what they do.

Ziggy was the dumbest character on the show.

I think that I hated only Marlo. He was just a shitter version of Avon.

Omar, Freamon and Bunk are the best written characters IMO.

I genuinely think Bubbles is the best written character I've ever seen.

The only character with the depth and development that comes close is Chris Moltisanti in The Sopranos.

I personally think Frank Sobotka had the best arch and has to be included as one of the best written characters. He's representative of a lot of the themes of the show. How good people can be forced to do bad things out of desperation and the death of American industry/blue collar jobs. On first watch that season feels a bit out of place, but on re-watches it is of the same high-quality as the other 4.
Watching it when it aired, Bodie was always one of my favorite characters. He went from someone who I hated to someone I was pissed to see die.

I fecking love The Bunk, but I don't think he's even close to being one of the best written characters in the show. He's great for comedy, but it's probably one of the least developed characters in the show, especially if you take into account that he's a part of all of it.

This scene has be in tears every time I watch it

While his character might not be as developed as others, I think it written damn near perfectly for his position in the show.

Interested to hear how you consider Chris and Snoop anywhere close to your 'favourite characters'? Not detestable, but they're not really supposed to be likeable. That's not at all to say they're one dimensional, there are intricacies to their characters and I do enjoy them, but I wouldn't say I like them!

Good shout, but I think that Chris Moltisanti is in a whole different league to Bubbs.

While Bubbles's arch follows him through a pretty one dimensional journey (addiction, guilt, redemption), There are so many levels to Moltisanti's character during the course of the series that I don't think we can find more depth and development for a character on any other show (maybe expect for Tony Soprano himself).

Which reminds me that I should rewatch The Sopranos again, for the fourth time.

I think that I hated only Marlo. He was just a shitter version of Avon.

A more cold-blooded, cynical and heartless version of Avon.

The only time Marlo showed heart was at the end of the final episode, when he ditched the meeting with Levy to stir some shit on the corner.

Good point actually, and yes I need to rewatch it too

Chris was definitely my favourite character in The Sopranos, now that it has been mentioned.

My top 5 for The Wire would probably be something like; Bodie, Stringer, Bunk, Lester, and Bubbles.

The show is so good and the characters are so well developed - bar the likes of Muzone and the other intentional one-dimensional characters - that any choice you make has real credence.
