Television The Wire

You're a rare one to be so into season 2 so quickly, normally takes a rewatch or two for most to really get it.

You're about to enter TV on a whole other level with 3 and 4 though, you lucky cnut!

I loved Series 2 straight away, and now it's even more relevant - it's basically an expose 10 years ahead of its time of why blue collar people fell for Trump's siren voice. Probably my favourite out of the 5, although they are all superb.

Just finished season 2 and love it. The show gets better and better as you get to know the characters.

Have to have the bloody sub-titles on though for fear of missing something important. Whoever described it as a visual novel earlier in the thread was bang on.

Kinda felt for Frank at the end... He was a good guy.

Season 2 is my favourite too.

Can't say I loved it straight away, but every time I rewatch The Wire I like it even more, I think the investigation is the best in terms of how it all comes together, and yeah you're absolutely right about its prescience in terms of what we're seeing in US politics today.

I like to think of The Wire as a fully rounded tv series.
Season 1 introduced the characters on the street and also on the wire.
Season 2 shows us where the drugs get brought into Baltimore via the docks. It also introduces to us the eastside of the city and the Greek.
Season 3 introduces to us the kids of Baltimore and how everything affects them whether their parents are dealers, junkies or in jail or one or other.
Season 4 shows the political influences and how red tape can effectively hinder the police in their pursuit of the dealers. "Follow the drugs and all you'll find is dealers and junkies. Follow the money and you never know where it'll take you."
Season 5 brings in the press and how they report and fake the news in order to hit their targets (just like the cops who are under pressure from the politicians to reduce crime).
The ending was how i expected it to be. Just showing us that things just continue as they are. New generations, new dealers, new junkies, new omars, new poets. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Beautiful.

Really need to rewatch this. Currently on S4 of The Sopranos (watching it for the first time) and while I'm enjoying it, I'm surprised the two shows are even compared. The Wire is streets ahead for me.

The Godfather 2 wouldn't exist without the Godfather. So what?

Also why wouldn't it? You think HBO would've stopped making shows if the Sopranos wasn't a big success?

Yes. Especially the wire, because HBO was losing money on that show. If not for the work of David Chase, you wouldn't have Breaking Bad, Mad Men or any of the top shows from the last decade.

Best series ever and I don't think it's particularly close. I love The Sopranos which is my #2. The Wire raised the bar so high. I have tried to introduce some of my closest friends to it and they either watched it and got bored (how?) or didn't give it a shot at all. They all think Breaking Bad is the best show ever, which, while excellent, is preposterous in my not so humble opinion.

It's a terrible argument for why something is better if that's what you are making. Many things wouldn't exist without iterations that were improved upon.

Personally, I prefer The Wire but The Sopranos is just as good when it's not doing stupid dream sequences or repeating plotlines. The humour in The Sopranos is next level as well, so I can see why people prefer it.

If anything, this seems like a poor argument. I was only replying to the previous post which you somehow managed to miss.

Maybe, maybe not, and ultimately, what does it matter? What does him saying the wire is better have to do with that? It's a weird argument.

Have given consideration to this show but just couldn't start for one reason or another. To be honest, Breaking Bad has spoiled us a bit and now has become a bit of a benchmark. Is it in the same bracket as Breaking Bad ?

The Wire is so much better than Breaking Bad but that's my opinion. Like really, BB is child's play compared to The Wire. The thing about The Wire though is that you have to watch it with a clear mind, you have to really 'sit for it' and pay close attention. Otherwise the plot will just pass you by.

No.

Much, much better IMO.

Fine, It will be next show I am going to watch. However, I have serious doubts that Breaking Bad can be matched. I don't think any show can reach the heights of Breaking Bad, it was just a master piece where everything from start to finish was perfect. The other thing which supports this claim is the ratings on this show, the overall rating as well as individual rating of episodes were kinda "Put-Off".

I will watch it with "Clear Mind" and with Time to actually "Sit".

I love BB, it's a great show, but The Wire shits on it from a great height.

Let's not forget the extreme violence:

Its very very different. Wouldn't be surprised if a few episodes in you'll wonder what everyone is on about but you'll soon see. Don't expect it to be similar though, it's a very different show.

I like the scenes where Lester was on to Mario's number and he put on his addict voice. " I want summa *** peppa steak!" lol

There's another scene way before he traces his number where he's trying to tap his phone at the end but it's just white noise because their sending pictures messages through the clock and he just sit backs and goes wtf!? and it just fades out so eerie.. one of my fav endings ever can't find it though.
