The UEFA Euro Fantasy Draft

I think the beautiful message is lost somewhere in translation.
I don't think so. It's the sort of economical use of communication and logical, ruthlessly efficient mindset that makes them great winning machines.

Not a characteristic you'd associate with poets though.

The draw is already done. If I'm not around, tag @Annahnomoss . He knows the quarterfinal match-ups as well.

Muller / van Basten vs Puskas / Gullit will be one juicy fight.

But I'd rather avoid for now.

If you guys avoid him long enough he will end up twatting you all, better get at him now when there are some chinks in the armour.

Anyhow, Blanc, is there any other defender who made three consecutive Team of the Tournament? In the 90s no less, "back when defenders could defend", and when only two CBs made it, not after when inclusions got dished around like candy.

Everyone will be familiar with Euro 2000, but Euro 1996 was even more impressive as an advance warning. They were just terrible at scoring goals, but the defensive setup was already set in stone.

Nobody rated Pepe and his two TotT :(

That's the thing with Pepe, either you have the stomach to put up with people just seeing him as a red card waiting to happen, or you stay clear. Predictable outcome that, it's always the same with him and in this one of all drafts it was a good opportunity to stick to him.

The big drawback is that he is a current player and people form opinion based on live games. Much difficult to argue against and convince than a 60s/70s players.

And? He was rock solid with Carvalho and a proper defender for Real, one of the best they've had over the last decade, and everyone should have seen that too. Yes, he is a bit OTT every now and then, but that doesn't stop people seeing his goood performances?

Anyhow, that ship has sailed as Campbell has all that going for him without any of the negative... oh wait, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAPTAIN!!!! Footballers make great morons.

Not consecutive but Maldini made the TOTM in 1988, 1996 and 2000. Italy didn't qualify for the 1992 edition.

Who do you think crappy will pick? I'm guessing Matthaus and a CB.

Depends what he wants to sort out going forward. A CB is a no-brainer, I reckon Desailly.

If Rummenigge were still around he would be the other no-brainer, but he is in a bit of a pickle when it comes to his pre-66 players.

This would be awesome but breaks the rules. He really needs to think long and hard about how he is addressing the pre-66 players as that's his major source of rigidity.

Not many enticing options though, so wouldn't be surprised if he keeps accummulating midfielders in the meantime. I'd pick Bene myself as the right-side forward.

No idea why Krol decided to leave the pitch there, probably went for a leak.

Nope. He has 2 frenchmen already and I don't think he'll drop Platini/Tigana.

Ah, balls, hadn't thought about nationalities. That's even worse because Rossetta is undroppable so an Italian CB would require dropping Tardelli, which strengthens the case for Matthäus.

Hmm, tough choices there. I still think Bene is an option he should look into.

Nightmare make or break picks.

Figo is the best right winger in the draft, not sure he'll drop him. Does look a tasty team though..

An anecdote as relayed by Daniel Taylor in the Guardian: 'On this occasion Sol Campbell wanted the FA's technical director, Dan Ashworth, to explain why Gary Neville had been fast-tracked through the system to become one of Roy Hodgson's assistants with the England team. Ashworth started talking about the favourable impression Neville had made on Hodgson and the players and was running through the processes that were involved when Campbell put out his hand to interrupt him. This is when things started to get a little strange.

'"But I am Sol Campbell."

'As you might imagine, that isn't a particularly easy sentence to come back from. Ashworth did his best to continue because, well, what else could he do? But it is fair to say the entire room had been engulfed in awkwardness and when Ashworth stopped talking there was another tumbleweed moment. Campbell, hand out, ended the conversation in the same way he had started it.

'"But I am Sol Campbell."

'He was correct. But whether he gets an invitation the next time there is one of these discussions is not entirely clear.'

The thing is, when it gets as ridiculous as that you can't not like the guy. I mean, he clearly is a bit special, how can you be too harsh on him? Exactly, you can't.

It also serves as a great reminder of how much of an opportunity football provides for people to make a good living when they would otherwise be of no use whatsoever.

Yes. Can't come up with a combo at all :(

Can any one tell me how much time is left for me

Do people think it is against the draft rules to play Krol as CB? I can't find any evidence to suggest if he did or did not play that role in 76?

FWIW, part of your problem is the gems go early. The unique players with great Euros, voter kudos, not from big nations, let alone pre-66, are the ones picked first.

You would have to consider that next round you get first dibs and, with that in mind, I think flexibility is the name of the game here: give yourself as much flexibility as possible to make one HUGE DRAFT-WINNING UPGRADE next time around. Think about what/ who those players would be, etc. Basically, your pick now should probably be one whereby you gamble on going through as is if needed, but with a view to wrap up the draft with that one upgrade after.

Whatever it takes to see Tardelli in a better role! :( Honestly though it seems dodgy if you can't prove he played there. More or less you'd lose the game if anybody watched the game and saw Krol as a LB. Up to Balu to decide, not sure if he has some kind of punishment for not abiding the rules of if it will be up to the voters.

He played LB vs. the Czechs, it's the game against Yugoslavia you should look into as he probably started CB and moved to LB once Jansen was subbed (just assumptions looking at the lineup and who the other players are, only one defo CB started that game).

He is the perfect leftback for your team though.
