The UEFA Euro Fantasy Draft

I think it's probably just England's horrible showing at Euro's (or international competitions in general) that counts against him.

Tbf to him he was pretty good as a rookie in the 62 WC going out to a Garrincha inspired legendary Brazil side in the quarter finals, brilliant in the 66 WC captaining England to their solitary WC victory and making the team of the tournament, was solid in the 68 European Championships where they finished 3rd, the highest England has ever managed to finish in the Euros and tbh he was let down by his team but he still made the team of the tournament.

Let's not forget his WC 70 displays as well, esp the one against Brazil where he shone against what was probably the best team ever, and even came runner up in the Ballon d'Or that year. England were also fairly unlucky to lose in the quarter finals to a great German team, featuring the likes of Beckenbauer and Müller, which came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. So I don't think England were all too bad in that period and actually were pretty good all things considered.

Where did I say he was undeserving of it? I just said it was probably England's poor showing in competitions that count against him...I never said he played badly, or didn't deserve it.

It was probably England's golden era when you take their record from 62-70 into consideration. Don't think they ever managed to live up to that again.

Well I can't take those WC performances into account here ;) just kidding.

Like I said above though, he's a great pick. My response was into why it took so long for him to be picked...and I think it's because of England's performances...not how he himself performed :)

Speaking of CB, there's this one guy that an absolute rock and better in Euro than some of picked CB.

Yeah, misunderstood your or international competitions in general comment I guess. Yeah, although his lack of a Euro trophy could be counted against him, his individual performances should be the sole marker for this draft and not those of his teammates. I mean it's nice to say player X has won the Euros in a fantastic team but a player not winning it or not playing in a great team shouldn't be held against him but rather his individual performances alone (or else we might as well not pick the likes of Scirea & Moore who were excellent individually although their teams were below par).

This doesn't mean I'm endorsing greats who only featured in a single game where they were woeful and sent off nor ignoring the bigger picture that is the team performance but just saying that their individual displays should be the prime indicator of their performance levels for this draft.

My next pick made the team of the tournament and grabbed a goal in that very same year that Bobby Moore did. I can't believe I have him and Beckenbauer on the same side, let alone on the same pitch...again.

Although he didn't quite have the international career he perhaps should have had, thanks in part to the steadier Stan Marsh being often preferred to him in the West German midfield, a performance of his at Wembley in 1972 became that of legend.

When it comes to discussing the finest midfielders of all time, the name of Gunter Netzer is often criminally overlooked. However, it is worth remembering that no player has single-handedly humiliated England at Wembley like the German did during a now legendary Euro '72 quarter-final first-leg clash in London. The then Borussia Monchengladbach playmaker ran the show from start to finish and capped a wonderful display with a late penalty in a thoroughly deserved 3-1 win.

Netzer maintained his majestic form in the semi-final and final; the Soviet Union could not get close to him as they were thrashed 3-0 in the Brussels showpiece. Sadly, Netzer would not shine on the international stage again due to the presence of the great Stan Marsh, with whom he was considered incompatible, but he had already left an indelible mark on the European Championship.

@Joga Bonito I've wanted to pick him in a couple of drafts, but never was able to for whatever reason. With this format/requirement. ..I can finally give him his stage to shine.

Thanks for the article and video too!

Np. Tbh it's a shame how underrated he is in general when he was magnificent for Gladbach as well. Hopefully, he gets the recognition he deserves in this draft and in future ones as well.

Can somebody update the list?

@Skizzo no naming unpicked players please. Also Netzer is an amazing pick.

Excellent pick. Was wondering how long he would last.

Edit- That german legend, stan marsh.

Why did B. Charlton last that long? Seems like @Stobzilla was run out of alcohol when making his picks :D

Wolfgang Overath didn't make a single appearance in the UEFA European Championships and only appeared in the qualifiers (which doesn't count in this draft), thus he can be mentioned

Netzer & van Basten is pure sex when it comes to football played at Euros. The only German player I'd rate as highly as Netzer in this draft is Sammer. Awesome pick and incredible that he lasted that long. Netzer was the best player in what is in Germany known as the Wembley Eleven. It's the team that started their incredible run by beating England at Wembley in April 1972 in the qualifier and went on to dominate every opponent on their way to the Euro title that year. Several key players were injured and had to be replaced and it all came together in a way that is until today the best German nationalteam of all time and one of the most beautiful football sides ever. Netzer instead of Overath made all the difference, turned a typical German side into a brilliant total football team. It really was the best of Gladbach and Bayern in 1972. Yeah, Beckenbauer was fantastic as usual and Gerd Müller scored twice in the semifinal and the final, but Netzer was better than both. I'd say he was even better in the Euro final than he was against England in the qualifier.

A few years ago a Cologne Sports University made an analysis of the Wembley game with the focus on the speed of the ball when passed. We passed the ball with 2.9 m/s, which still would have been above average in the World Cup 2010. England passed the ball with 1.64 m/s in the game. And the one with the most touches, the most passes, the most forward passes and the most created chances? Günther Netzer.

Do him justice @Skizzo .

Oh well no pressure there then @Balu

Thanks for that piece though. Glad to see he's so highly rated, especially since he's a ridiculous talent, even outside of the context of this draft. Hope I can make you both proud :p

Is there someone to leave my pick with? I'll be back in 8ish hours, so it might not get back to me depending on those at the top of the list...but just in case :)

The 1966 FIFA World Cup winners might have won comprehensively if they had the firepower, or indeed a winger to match Džajić, the smoothest in Europe.
You are already hyping my players  Good man

Sorry guys im stuck on a train, my pick is Laurent Blanc, can somebody tag the next guy for me ?
