The Trump Presidency - Part 2

At what point does big capital step in to correct Trump? While they must be happy at his tax cuts for the wealthiest, he's wreaking havoc with stock markets even when he doesn't actually go forward with sanctions.

Elon Musk is Trump's closest ally
Jeff Bezos destroyed his newspaper's reputation to help Trump.
Jamie Dimon supports DOGE.
Black Rock has made supportive statements about Trump last year.

And these are silicon valley and wall street - the two segments traditionally most hostile to trump. Extractive industries, traditional Republicans, will love the opportunity to mine national parks and other federal land.
And I personally know of pharma mid -level research managers explaining how the NIH closure will destroy the bargaining position of their academic collaborators (and help the pharma company get better terms).

Trump is one of the most nefarious creatures of this "modern" world. Feels like the twilight zone. I have been feeling very down lately and I believe him being reelected has a lot to do with it.

The only thing you can do for your mental well being is to tune it out for a while, as hard as that is.

It doesnt help that United are shit too.

I'm so desperately trying to not watch any US related news.

Failing miserably of course.

I really did not imagine Trump giving Musk this level of access and control over his presidency. Some fools were even speculating how Musk may not even get some kind of access pass to White house.

$5mil gets you a "gold card" and the path to citizenship.
$288mil gets you the the ability to be incharge of "government efficiency" and to be able to grant your own company huge government contracts...

It is still a valid Q. The "new money" Big tech companies are much more wedded to stock market returns than previous corps. All these billionaires including Musk got their current position of power due to their companies' stock rocketing to where it is now. Ultimately, if there is a prolonged market slump for which majority shareholders of these companies suffer it will blow back on Trump and his administration.

It's the hope that kills you, mate.

Depends what's on the other side of the door. I think Musk is just batshit crazy and on a bit of a power trip, while if you look at the likes of Google, Amazon and Meta i would figure it's a very strategic play positioning them for the future, especially with AI becoming a bigger and bigger part of daily life. The potential short term effects on their shares will be easy to ignore compare to the type of access they have at the highest possible level, not to mention how easy it seemingly is to pretty much get away with things.

My my contention is that other than Musk , other crony capitalists who are linking up behind Trump right now are motivated by continuing to make money and not by MAGA ideology. Yes, currently, they might even sheepishly back tariffs despite knowing them to be harmful to the economy to please emperor Trump. But once they lose money over an elongated period they will push back in one way or the other to reverse some of these policies that are directly harmful to their money making capacity. That may not mean the admin reversing harmful actions around social or even foreign policy issues but should street the economic policies to classic republican direction.

Now speaking to press with Starmer. Is it the mineral deal that got him to backtrack or pressure from within the GOP? The backstabbing of Ukraine might not have been very popular with the wider population apart from cultists as polls are starting to come in.

Depends if they actually start losing money and how bad it gets, what type of people we're talking about. The biggest fish have aligned around Trump. I'd imagine there's going to be quite a few lucrative opportunities for them. Like when they start rebuilding Ukraine, when they start opening up trade with the Russians again and American companies will be welcomed into the motherland. The type of access they have at the highest level, the type of stuff they can get away with as long as they don't cross Trump. If you allow companies like Meta and Google to pretty much dictate their own terms on how they take advantage of the data they have, how they can exploit it the most, AI and content filtering, the sort of power they actually have and how they can daily influence people is pretty fecking scary.

It's funny to think how concerned people were with troll farms and people spamming social media with fake news, how it could influence elections. That concern needs to be upped quite a few notches for what we're seeing now.

Sure, you'll have a lot of very rich people in less influential situations that might actually lose money, but they won't actually be able to influence anything. Meanwhile, an absurd amount of power is handed to people with the ability to reach out to millions which allows them to control a lot of the narrative.

I don't think this is going to end well and short term i can't imagine that someone will actually turn on Trump.

I started by saying this is all fixated on stock market going through a slump or even crashing due to the actions of this admin.

But for the people with actual access and power, it's just going to be a meaningless reduction of their paper value while they line up other opportunities and potentially influence policies in the direction that will see their fortune skyrocket.

It‘s fecking unbelievable.

I could go back to The Netherlands, but decided not to let the orange toad destroy what I‘ve built here.

I decided to get on with life, limit my exposure to news and have a tough attitude about it.

Don‘t let him ruin your mood too much. I know it‘s hard, but be angry not sad. I wish I could give you a hug.

We are going in circles. Bezos wealth is directly tied to Amazon stock. So unless he is buying some fixed asset by direct cash he is gonna receive from US govt, he is always going to rely on stock price of Amazon stock to wield his influence via money power. Only caveat I see is that he keeps his space company private and some jumbo Govt contract for it is more valuable than 100B+ stock price of Amazon, which seems unlikely.
All the rich billionaires who lined up behind Trump during his inauguration have overwhelming percentage of their wealth tied to one stock or the other. You can call it paper money but that is what brought them the seat at the table. So this applies to all of them except Musk who has gone off the deep end.

Bezos's wealth may have orginated with Amazon stock but he on'y owns 9% of it now so I doubt that remains the case now

Amazon is worth 2.39T so 9% of it is around 200 billions. Most of Bezos’ wealth is tied to Amazon.

Does Meta lose their ability to directly influence it's users if their share value go down by 30% as a result of a trade war where the stock market plummets? Is Musks value linked to his Tesla shares or his ownership of Twitter/X. What brought them a seat at the table isn't their money, but their influence.

I know this might sound trite, but at times like this I think the serenity prayer is a pearl of wisdom. Try to focus on the good you can do and not the bad you can't control.

My take on it too.
A shame United men’s team aren’t a happy distraction but the women are cheering me up at least.
