The Super Bowl Thread

Manning bottles it against the first decent team he has faced in post season. No surprise there.

Saints were the better team. If not for the first quarter jitters in their first ever SB, the win would have been more comprehensive

Didn't he face the Patriots and win few years ago?

No more than Brady did two years ago. Wayne dropped a pass right that there that would have cut it to 31-24. I also think it was Wayne that didn't make the right cut on that interception although it might have been a great read by the defender to cut inside.

Actually it was a great read by the defender. He knew his team was blitzing and that Manning wouldn't have much time. So he was sitting on the pass and waiting - there was no space on the right for Wayne to make a cut.

I have a noob's question? Why don't they always kick the "punt shot" or whatever they call it like the Saints did in the 2nd (3rd) quarter??

The inside kick or whatever?

I guess it would be because you risk losing possession very deep in your own sone?

Good thinking

I would try it a lot more if I was in their position though :)

Do the owners lift the trophy first?

So you could get Malcolm Glazer lifting a the Lombardi trophy at some point?

Which other countries play that sport?

World Champions!! WTF?

You're confusing punt, which is what a team does when they can't make the yards with a Kick which what they do to score points. The best kickers can usually make 50 yard kicks with any degree of consistency. If a team is within range they usually will take the kick, but often times a team will be like 60+ yards from the the goal posts. In that case it becomes a question of field position and you want to pin the opposition as far away from your goal as you can. Hence the punt.

(i have a feeling this isn't the answer you were looking for, but there it is)

PS. feck you Peyton Manning :P

Decent game. Not the greatest of Super Bowls but last year set the bar pretty high. Glad to see the Saints pull this one out and extremely happy for the people of New Orleans.

I also hope a lot of you guys watching and making witty comments still found something to enjoy as well. It's not quite as brilliant as your football, but it certainly has it's own merits and I hope you were able to find a few today. :)

Had 29 quid left in my bank account tonight so dumped it into a Paddy Power account, put 12 on the Saints to win by more than 3.5 and 17 on Drew Brees for MVP. Got back 107 quid. Delighted :)

Very smart bets. Hindsight of course makes it look even smarter but I definitely would've put money on those. Congratulations.

All this talk about him being one of the best three of four QB's of all-time surely, finally put to bed. His post-season record is average and he's always played in a nice, comfy dome.

feck you Rod

The same with the world series, it would be funny if some national champions from another country sued them over it.

When I watched this last year stateside, I came to the conclusion it is the American equivilent of Eurovision.

Following on from that, I'd watch if Terry Wogan was commentating, or Jeremy Clarkson.

Brees will probably get the MVP but for me it should be that CB who scored the touchdown off the interception.

Brees probably deserved it, but I'd give a big shout to Pierre Thomas. He just seemed to come up with big plays when they needed them.

Oh, and Springsteen last year was so much better than The Who

The reactionary nature of the American press never ceases to amaze me.

In the build up to SB 42 Brady is ready to join Montana at the top of the QB list as it is almost guaranteed he will pick up his fourth ring and one of the greatest individual seasons ever. Manning is in his shadow. Then the Giants deservedly win with Brady playing on an ankle which he struggled to recover from in time for the doomed season opener against the Chiefs and with the offensive line doing their best impression of a revolving door. Despite him putting his team in a position to win with a solid drive towards the end of the game they all backtrack on their words. Brady then missed a full season and came back successfully but the press still use his inevitable ups and downs as their focal point of Manning being pushed forward as the better player and the ‘player of the decade’.

I notice that on the basis of one game and to be honest what I thought was an awful throw and miscommunication with Wayne certain columnists etc are starting to circle around Manning. Mike Freeman, CBS: “Manning heard and believed too much of the talk that he would be anointed the greatest quarterback of all time if he won… The greatest of all time? Nope. Not even close now. The GOAT doesn't throw that kind of awful interception. Joe Montana didn't throw those in the Super Bowl. Has Tom Brady?”

One game and essentially one play makes the difference between how he is perceived and judged? His career is not even over yet and neither is that of Brady whose career seems destined to run alongside and be constantly compared to Mannings. You will only be able to truly judge it once both are finished playing. I still believe this will be remembered as the Brady-Manning era but Brees was very good and accurate last night, Roethlisberger is still surrounded by a top class organisation and the league is more pass orientated than ever. Who’s to say someone won’t spoil the party.

Since I am not familiar much with the situation, let me ask why people dislike (hate?) Manning?

feckin echoes in here are murder ;)

I think he's disliked because he's on every 2nd commercial hawking this, that and the other.

I've no beef with him but I do hear him taking a lot of stick alright.

I've always wondered. Why does everyone hate Payton Manning?

They don't. Manning is undoubtedly one of the best QBs to ever play the game. In this instance, i think New Orleans benefited from the post Hurricane sympathy factor, as well as the fact that Drew Brees is a nice guy - whereas Manning sort of came across as a statistical machine who chokes in big games.

Not really sure that's true.

Sure you get Patriot fans who dislike him purely because of the Brady rivalry but on the whole I don't think he's hated by neutrals. Obviously success and hype does bring opposition but that's the same for anyone who is successful.

Eli's probably more hated than him due to the way he came into the league with the whole San Diego mess, and of course because of the New York press.
