The successor to David de Gea

Is he really all that? I don't watch Brighton very often, but often hear his name touted as a potential candidate for us. From the little I have seen of him, he seems to have a mistake in him. Even today he flapped from a corner that gifted Liverpool a goal. Admittedly, he also made a good save late on from Alexander-Arnold's free kick.

He didn’t look that good yesterday did he?

Henderson. No one is specialised in picking the ball from the net than the English Buffone

Diogo Costa seems to be the most obvious candidate.
  • Technically well rounded, good shot stopper, proactive in terms of movement, composed against the press, and a capable distributor.

  • Big-time performer at youth level, for what it's worth (like ter Stegen and de Gea in their formative years).
  • 23 years old, so plenty of football ahead of him (including his peak); and already a starter for Portugal with 7 appearances.
  • Release clause of £50 million, so there will be need to waste months on club-to-club negotiations.
A significant initial investment won't matter much in the medium to long term for such a consequential position (especially under a possession-oriented coach who's fond of playing with high lines). Do it once and do it right and do it quickly.

From the little I have seen of Costa, I endorse this view.

Diogo Costa is my choice too, as excellently analysed above. His mates are here already too, which can only help.

Hasn’t Carmo just joined Porto this summer ? Unless we’re moving one of Lindelof or Maguire on and have firm interest in either of them I don’t see us signing a centre back although I’d happily see the back of Maguire and Lindelof.

I think Costa is definitely the one to go with especially with the release clause making it easy to do a quick deal, if we manage to move De Gea and Henderson this summer it’s a massive £500K a week saved in keepers wages alone.

The best distributor of the ball I’ve seen is Itumeleng Khune, unfortunately he is old now.

The Kaizer Chiefs goal keeper coach who also coached Khune has produced some quality keepers over the years.

Since we are already taking coaches from South Africa, we might as well recruit the goal keeper coach from Kaizer Chiefs.

Here is a video of Khune, notice the catch and release he does to set the team on a counter. Start at 4:00 just to see the distribution

I know they are losing at half-time but Copenhagen's Kamil Grabara looks decent and he is aged 23 - he is a Polish player apparently - anyone know much about him? or is he just having one of those amazing nights that a keeper can have once in a bluemoon.

Agree. Don't know about his footwork but he is good enough to be #2, assuming inexpensive.

No way. He is NO 2 choice goalie in an average Cyprus team. His footwork is not better than DDG. He is not consistent, makes a lot of errors and poor judgement. I am not taking anyt him but to be honest, it was more of a bad finish.

The Athletic: "One alternative, said to be a realistic possibility, is that United start negotiations to extend De Gea’s deal but on much lower terms."

"United are currently searching the market for goalkeepers who match the Ten Hag copybook. Diogo Costa at Porto is having an excellent season and the 23-year-old is being watched by United staff. Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Simon, 25, is another on United’s list."

"Tony Coton, United’s chief goalkeeping scout, is leading the search and is set to be busy travelling Europe for the next few months, feeding back first-hand reviews to the club’s data system. A goalkeeper of good age to play for United over the coming decade is the primary target."

Im danish, but dont follow the superliga really. Cant say I’ve heard much raving about him. Could be wrong, but sometimes when a big player/talent emerges, it filters out from medias and gets common knowledge to someone like me who rarely watches the danish league.

Many FC Copenhagen players have played great in europe over the years (partly due to good team performances), but few have taken the next big step. Many have ended in the dutch or german league and eventually end up back in Denmark when they fail to make it there. Daramy is one of the greater talents and have gone back. He’s too good for the danish league still. However, Copenhagen’s been shit this year domestically.

If you want a keeper from Denmark it should be Mads Hermansen. He has an absolute terrible defense in front of him and yet has managed more clean sheets this season than Kamil. Last season Mads Hermansen was also absolutely fantastic.
Mads is the real deal.

Here is a good article about him:
