This. A thousand times this.

Before any of the current Spurs hype can be taken even remotely seriously, they need to win a trophy.

FA Cup or PL this season is a must for them, if they bottle both of these - as they bottled finishing above Arse last season - then you gotta say it's just hype.

Not sure how Spurs can bottle the PL or FA cup at this point. Not winning isn't the same as bottling.

So every team that doesn't win the PL or FA Cup this season will have bottled it?

Wow there's a lot of bottle jobs in football these days.

No no no, bottling it is the modern day football analyst's fall back position. If a club loses a game they bottled it, 19 PL teams will this season bottle it, 15 out of the last 16 in the CL will bottle it etc

It's laughably stupid.

I agree, too many say that x team bottled something these days, it's lazy.

It's typical Spurs hype too. We have heard about how they are "nearly there" for decades now.

Time to win some silverware Spurs - the biggest and best clubs win trophies.

No one remembers those few times you finished 3rd. So what?!

I think the quoted poster just misused the term. People generally only say a team have 'bottled' it if they were in a good position to win it.

Oh we agree don't worry!

An 86m bar sounds like my idea of heaven!

£4 a pint in London?

The stadium is designed as a fan experience, we have our 18,000 single tier stand and will be close to the pitch, as fans that's what we want, I don't care what they are doing in the boxes or Michelin restaurant.

Well if it's a micro-brewery, should be fecking cheap to actually make. There are a fair few round where I am and you can get it, I even had a pint for £3 last night! Given that's south west, but it's still the border of zone 2.

Yeah I think the actual stadium side of looks incredible as well. The only real reason I worry for the rest, is that it will eventually creep into price increases on tickets. I hope not! If London becomes devoid of any real atmospheres, it will be gutting.

So if you're in a good position and you don't win it it's because you've bottled it?

Even though these clubs have coaches and players who are World Cup winners, Euro Winners, Copa America winners, finalists in these competitions, CL winners, League winners, cup winners etc etc, it's because they bottle it?

It's laughably stupid from people who just can't fathom that there might be other reasons, or maybe another team were just better or played better on a given day.

It's become a fashionable term that's used all of the time by people who think that they are offering a rare insight into the psychology of players, coaches and clubs, when actually they use it because they can't figure out any other factors.

I actually read this morning that Novak Djokovic bottled it yesterday agains Istomin in the Australian Open, I mean seriously!

Prices are already ridiculous in London, and you are right since West Ham have moved Spurs and Palace are the only London clubs that can generate a proper football atmosphere. I'm hopeful that we won't lose that especially with the main home end being single tier. Also if safe standing is ever introduced into England the stadium has been designed with this in mind for easy conversion.

I agree that it shouldn't be used to suggest weakness in mentality.

Yep, there must be more bottle-jobs than in a micro-brewery.

Dunno, I've seen some right fatties in city shirts.

Maybe after they get their new in house bakery.

After week 22 we have 7 more points than at this stage last season, have a +9 better GD and (depending on Arsenal's result) sit two places higher in the table.

If only the season ended now!

That's been your problem for a number of years though, as you well know.

Trophies are what you need now - this whole period of Pochettino/Kane/Alli will mean absolutely nothing if you don't get at least one trophy out of it.

This season you're still in for the PL, FA cup and EL - one of these must be won.

Agreed, apparently the only reason you lose anything these days is bottle.

I think Roy Keane hit the nail on the head way back when he wrote his first autobiography. He said the night we won the Treble that Bayern bottled that match at the end, 'whether we won it or not'-and that part is the key, bottling it might not be about winning or losing, you can bottle it and still win through luck, or not bottle it and still lose.

I agree we need to win a trophy, but even if we don't, finishing in the top 4 again won't mean "absolutely nothing". It will boost our income, provide CL football next season and raise our profile that little bit more in terms of attracting sponsorships.

Here are some interesting figures from Transfermarkt.com on net spend (never mind wages bill) over the last 5 seasons to date:

Spurs: £7.1m
Chelski:£132.7m *
Liverpool: £144.6m
Arsenal: £210.7m
United: £397.6m
City: £426.6m

* Helped by the recent £51m Chinese windfall for Oscar.

Spurs have been very entertaining this season. Eriksen has really stepped it up to another level too, I would take him over the massively overrated Coutinho any day. Not sure where all the Spurs hate comes from on here.

No * next to Spurs for the sale of Bale?

Zero trophies for Spurs (and Liverpool).

Multiple trophies for the all the others on the list.

If you wish. But the recent Chinese willingness to offer sums out of all proportion to players' actual ability is a somewhat different kettle of fish.

That was fair value? Unlike some of chelsea's sales. I mean if you offer spurs fan 80m or bale, am sure all of them will opt for bale. Can you really say the same for chelsea?
Give it a rest already. £51m for Oscar was a fair deal.

Sure, but then the net spend of City (for example) has been 60 times that for Spurs.

 Yeah so funny isn't it.

He would've cost at least £30m to sell in the first place even if we weren't selling to January. Could've easily gotten that from a Premier League club or Inter Milan.

Brazil International, only 25 years old, January midseason buy & the typical rich club inflation. More than a fair deal.

60 times is meaningless hyperbole imo. If you spent 1m and the other spent 60M its still 60 times but really its the price of 1 top player. If that team is winning trophies then maybe you too should be spending more in order to make you win trophies than talking about 60 times.

In the five years between 2005/2006 and 2010/11 Man United's net spend was £12m.

Tottenham's by comparison in the same period was approximately 10 times more than that.

Man United won 4 League titles, a Champions League, a Club World Cup, two League Cups and 4 Charity Shields.

Tottenham won league cup.

So forgive me if I don't sympathise with your current poverty given the money you've pissed up the wall over the years.

I suppose the £420m it represents is meaningless too. After all, it only equates to well over double the cost of the entire Spurs squad (in fact closer to 3 times than double).

As a fan, I dont really give two shits if the clubs net spend (or any spend for that matter) is 10x the sum of the above. As long as it doesnt bankrupt the club and we win trophies / compete at a certain level, it does not affect me what so ever.
