The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand

I'm glad they're doing this while he's still manager. Few years back, Gill was quoted as saying they'll do it when he's finished and I thought that was quite silly.

You know you're a don when you get a stand named after you whilst you are still at the club and you still aren't even contemplating retiring.

Statue to be sculpted by Philip Jackson, creator of the Busby and United Trinity statues. Expected to be unveiled at the start of next season.

Expect a mundane looking sculpture then. If I had my way he'd be stood tapping his Timex...whilst screaming his head off.

It's not a Michael Jackson statue but its without a doubt the next best thing.

I'd scrap a statue and have the artists who designed the Olympic posters paint something simplistically abstract and obscure, like a single orange blot in the middle of 17 star shaped potato prints, to represent the chaotic beauty of his essence.

This is such a fitting tribute!

I missed the first 5 minutes of today's game. Did they have a ceremony unveiling it right before the game?

You can't tell Sir Alex what to do, he'll sit if he wants to.

It's brilliant and well done to the club for that.

Now SAF's name will literally hang over the next United manager. No pressure.

Fully deserved, a true living legend.

I got hammered for not linking badges to my match day thread....and the date...and the fact that it was a PL match. Do we really have the most stupid people posting on here or they are just flesh eating zombies? To spoonfeed or to have trust in people? But yeah, I didn't mind some of those posters, I quite like the less is more approach.

That last picture was nice as well, it was taken just after Sir Alex finished his 10 minute solo dance.

feck. Missed this. Any chance of vid later?

Chief executive David Gill said: "To be at a club of our standing for so long

is truly remarkable.

"In that time Alex has established himself as the most successful manager in British football history, winning countless trophies and creating numerous sides admired around the world for their flair and ability.

"Alex's contribution to United has been immense and the magnificent stadium we have here at Old Trafford is a testament to his ability and success.

"The board felt it right to take this unique step, as well as to commission Philip Jackson to create a statue to go alongside his other great pieces here of Sir Matt and the United Trinity.

"These tributes are made with the grateful thanks of the owners, board, staff, players and fans of Manchester United, for the great pleasure Alex has brought us all over a quarter of a century."

SAF: I think there was some anxiety about our play but credit to Sunderland because they battled hard. They are going through a sticky patch but I can't see how they're going to be in trouble. Steve [Bruce] is a great manager and has done fantastically well. I didn't expect that [the presentation] today. I felt very honoured and emotional to see my name on that stand. I didn't know a thing about it

Well deserved. What a tribute.

haha did you see them talking about them on the BBC this morning? What a load of shite. Tracy Emin can't draw. I think even if you do 'modern art', that should be a basic requirement.

It'll be on MOTD I would have thought. BBC have been really covering the 25 anniversary a lot.

They carried it live on the Final Score show, which was good. I suppose they'll repeat it on MOTD and MOTD2 I guess. Just listened to his post match interview on Radio 5Live, and SAF is saying he's going to sack Mike Phelan for not telling him the club were going to do this. He had no idea that the club were doing this.
