As I understand, you're only locked to the step1 player in that scenario and you only need to fulfill the other criteria.

Its a wee bit dodgy looking, as wiki says his pro career started in France. Then again, he was 18 when he moved so there's a grey area.

Luckily for NoPace, he never traded Chumpito for Carlos, so he has two CBs and that means Rio will be fecking strikers, or strikers will be fecking Rio.

With NoPace trying every forward under the sun, we imagined he could do with WC wonderscorer Siphiwe Tshabalala. He only narrowly missed selection in the previous round.

@Skizzo I need some help here :nervous: . Did he really never feature for the first team there before he moved to Europe?
 
If Essien actually played for Liberty Professionals in a capacity which would make him eligible for the criterion, I can't find any proof of this.

He has no matches for Liberty Professionals on record that I'm aware of. This doesn't mean that he positively did NOT feature for them in a capacity which would make him eligible - records could be missing, but there it is.

What we know is that he moved to Europe while still a youth player by age - he was on trial for United, as many will remember, before his 18th birthday.

EDITED: He didn't go to Antwerp. We wanted him to (couldn't sign him directly - and we had a deal with Antwerp regarding youth players), but his family wanted to stay in France.

Just throwing it out there, but I think it is fair to assume that Essien played at least once or twice for them, it would seem far fetched that he played zero games for them and went on to feature in a youth tournament.

Select a player who has played league football in Asia, Africa or Oceania.

Didn't think "league football" meant "adult top flight football". I picked him knowing he played there at a youth level, playing league football in the youth leagues in Ghana. I could have missed a clarification post in the thread but I haven't read it. Just got this in the PM and it says nothing about top flight or senior football in it.



Noun 1. football league - a league of football teams
league, conference - an association of sports teams that organizes matches for its members

I.e League football is played at any ages and not a term only used for senior football leagues. I don't mind a sheep if this wasn't how the rules were supposed to be interpreted but it was very straight forward to me.
 
I would assume that "league football" means professional/senior football. Kids footy doesn't count.
 
@Skizzo, well played - you scared us to death, I can't believe how many great players missed out because everyone was too scared to pick them.

Hatzipanagis, interesting if Stobz will manage to sell him to voters. The guy was quality.

Happy with Buchwald though. Rivaldo and Jairzinho went uncontested, ffs :lol:

Indeed. If it's just youth football, it can't possibly count.

However, Stobz' idea above ain't outlandish. Seems difficult to prove, though.

Yeah, he was 18 when he left and physically enough developed to play first team football in the league there. I would be very surprised if he never played for the first team at all, but I can't find any stats about it.
 
Ffs, why isn't there any information on the Ghanaian league in 99/2000. For what it's worth, wiki says he played for the youth team in Ghana in 98/99, that summer he excelled at the u-17 youth world cup. He moved to Europe a full year later, is it really outlandish to assume that he played for the first team at least once as a sub in that year?

I'd be willing to give Annah the benefit of the doubt here, but if someone wants to veto it, because there's no proof for (or against) it, we have to wait for Skizzo to make a call.

His clubs board blocked a fair few moves as they were fearful of the crowds reaction if they did sell him but Lazio, Porto, Arsenal and Stuttgart were all said to have been close to taking him.

There was some sort of administrative balls up which meant he couldn't play more than what he did for Greece as well.

A sheep would be totally unfair, it was as much Skizzo and me not checking it properly as it was Annah's fault. We have to find a different solution if Essien isn't accepted as a valid pick.
 
Meh I'm fine with Annah keeping Essien. Only other option is to give him a chance to pick again, which wouldn't really be fair since he could probably upgrade his pick and would have help thanks to the usual naming of unpicked players that happened after the round.

Balls ups are down to the managers IMO. You clearly specified they should send links as fail-safes. His interpretation sort of explains it, but reminds me of Felipe and his paper skeleton on The Apprentice. Looked genius then increasingly not so much...

Maybe a slight downgrade to the Star Wars one?

The U-17 World Cup was late in the year (November). He went to Europe shortly after that (having attracted the attention of several scouts). He was on trial for United in April 2000, signed for Bastia in July of that year - all this before he turned 18.

But yes - I find it likely enough that he did indeed feature for the first team in the Ghanaian league: He was a huge talent, after all, and it's not like he was a baby at the time. It could've easily happened.

We kinda accepted his proof though, could have easily written, that this isn't good enough as proof instead of accepting it. Giving him a sheep seems wrong to me here, because he deserved a 3rd attempt.
 
My tuppence:

1. He submitted proof - and the proof was accepted as far as he was concerned. Even if it's an ineligible pick, it WAS accepted at the time.

2. Essien may in fact have featured at senior level for the club in question. It's not inconceivable.

Verdict: Annah gets to keep him.
