The Second RedCafe Sheep Draft

It's a theoretical discussion. There's no way this can be a match day type discussion as we don't know what he'll pick in future or what he'll face in a match.

In fact these discussions only help him pick future players as he's aware of the general thought process here.

If no such discussions, there'll be no posts and the draft part will just get boring as there's nothing else to post on!

As long as the manager is cool with it thats fine. He's not - so lets just move the topic of discussion to something else.

FWIW I agree with @antohan. Platini is not a Juan Mata, yes his goalscoring record is brilliant but that 80s trio of great number 10s were the most complete 10s in the history of the game. They loved nothing more than getting on the ball and dictating the game from back to front. . Similar to how Cruyff used to do it for the Dutch and Ajax. They were total footballers and not final third 10s.. they knew how to be proper midfielders as well as be trequartista/deadly strikers. So in that sense. . Pirlo and Platini are not combatible because Pirlo likes to take his time and pull the strings at his pace.. playing with Platini.. he'd have to curtail his natural game and be willing to take quicker touches on the ball and not direct play as much.

Puskas showed he can adapt to playing alongside another maestro in Di Stefano so I think he is less of a problem. He has the style to focus on being more of a goal threat but Platini/Pirlo.. I wouldn't say they're complementary but they'd be super silky to watch nonetheless.

Dropping deep at times is not the same thing as playing in a deep position. You mention Cruyff and he's a good example of someone who did the same thing as Platini.

Cruyff came deep at times but it was a secondary part of his game and he was an offensive player. XXXXXXX made Holland tick from deeper positions, not Cruyff. He actually had similarities to Pirlo in some senses albeit a completely different mentality.

But aye, the general point that they had a tendency to drop deep is true. Around five minutes into the '74 final Cruyff is literally the furthest player back player in the entire Dutch team, but it's not his position and not where he would be for the majority of the match. Nor is dropping deep incompatible with having other playmakers in the side, as Holland showed in '74 or Brazil in '70. That latter team had the most impressive collection of playmakers of any team in history, but no one would say that it stifled the side or limited Pele.

@Theon remove that Dutch player's name but I agree in a sense. Let's also respect NM's wishes and keep it to PMs

As if that makes a difference now after the hundreds of unpicked midfielders we already named during this discussion.

I know but it is never too late to start. It's also hypocritical the way we quickly jump on posters outside this thread naming players when we ourselves do the same (accidentally ofc). Just need to exercise a wee bit more caution, that's all.

I hate you all for blocking Uwe Seeler by the way.

:(

Not that bad - double block, as I expected, but I came too close to having this monster pair upfront not to be sad about it.

Pleased to see my Bergomi pick is causing blocks two rounds later.

Before I go...to clarify before everyone sends in their 2nd stage picks.

The two sections for players are as follows:

1. A player from the losing team of a European Cup or CL final.

and

2. A player from the losing team of a Cup Winners Cup, Uefa Cup, or Europa League final of the same year.

If you get a Pass from a player in section 1, your next picks still have to be from section 2. Players from different losing sides, in the different competitions, in the same year.

You need one losing player from CL/European Cup final AND a player from Cup Winners Cup/Uefa Cup/Europa League

It's not fair that Cutch and NM will not struggle after their childish mistakes. @sajeev, let's get in their games!
