Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

A Walk Among The Tombstones
Thought this set up really well and I was ready for decent crime/revenge thriller but as the film went on, it started losing gas and just fell in to genre cliches 5.5/10

Completely agree. Felt like a waste of time.

I watched Moon last night. Decent movie and great special effects when you think about the budget. I liked the story too. Sam Rockwell was fantastic. 7.5/10

It's on my list, and I absolutely loved Prisoners and Incendies. I think Villeneuve is a Fincher level talent. But it's been caned so it's further down than it would've been.

I enjoyed parts of Prisoners but didn't like it quite as much as others, have to get around to watching Incendies when I get the chance. As for Enemy its got pretty good rotten tomatoes scores but I don't think its for everyone as reviews here show.

Gregory's Girl

Scottish school-based film about an awkward young teenager who falls for the girl that displaces him in the school football team. Nice wee film, been meaning to get around to it for a while since it's well-known in Scotland. The depiction of the school is fairly non-cliched and avoids the usual stereotypes you'd get, and while some of the acting is quite poor in places from a select few, most of the cast is good, the lead actor is decent and gives some good comedic moments.

7.5/10

The graphic sex in the closing scene is a bit of a shock though.

Yeah same. Enemy seems to be a bit of a marmite film looking at opinions on it.

Plonk it on the top of the list because it's a great film.

Lemon Tree Passage
Horror film about Australian urban legend about a haunted highway. Was a decent idea but the plot was too confusing because of the way it was told and once the story unravelled, it was just a typical ghost revenge fair. Pretty disappointing after a decent start 4.5/10

Prisoners was moody in a great way, Gone Girl was so sterile.

Saw a double feature tonight:

Dr Strangelove - still my favourite comedy, there's nothing quite like it.

Taxi Driver - reminded me how more enjoyable and less convoluted Scorsese's old stuff is.

except for Noomi Rapace. Worst actress in the world.

Disagree, IMO shes just the latest in a long line of foreign/European actresses that Hollywood doesn't have a clue what to do with. She'll probably come back to Europe at some point and do some good work as she did in the TV series of Girl With The dragon Tattoo.

Predestination is one of the most bonkers, purposefully OTT, and yet somehow still obviously predicatable Sci-Fis I've ever seen. I can't bring myself to hate it because of it's crazy, balls out conviction to it's sillyness, but I also can't bring myself to love it because of it's obvious and openly telegraphed plotting..

Oh, you aren't showing us the faces of these two hugely integral characters...well, I'm sure there's a perfectly non-twist baiting explanation for that

A bit like Adrian Brody's 2009 B-movie Splice, it's so silly, and so unapologetically runs to the limits of it's premise, that you've got to at least ironically appreciate how seriously everyone's taking it.

Fair play.

You might be right. Maybe speaking her native language help her with the acting. But she killed Prometheus for me.

Yeah that's a fair review.

Enemy is more Lynchian than Fincher-esque. Gone Girl reminded me of Prisoners tho, in a bad way.

Ironically, I watched Gone Girl just after finishing Prisoners.

Gone Girl is basically just a moodily shot Wild Things. And it's a fun film viewed in that kind of way, but as Oscar hyped "film of the year" shizzle? Hell no. Unless we're going to retroactively reappraise the genius of Wild Things... Which I wouldn't be averse to.

I know some people have gone after it for it's depiction of women, but that wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't being pushed so seriously. Or made by David Fincher. If you're going to treat women badly Dave, do it with a gratuitous school girl 3-way in a cheesy light hearted romp... like Wild Things.

I'm not sure why Pike is being lauded so much either, it's a common or garden femme fatale performance. Which is fine, but then give Denise Richards an Oscar if that's your bag... Which again, I wouldn't be averse to.

@Cina thinks Gone Girl and Predestination are great films. But anyway @Mockney, why was the insane paradox created in Predestination? And have you seen Nightcrawler? I thought it was entertaining if some what hammy bollocks.

Nah I thought Predestination was a bit crap. Gone Girl was good though, but not up with Fincher's best stuff.

Who knows, you never have to explain those things in silly sci-fi shit. What else did that organisation do? Was he their only agent? Why was the time travel device a weird analogue violin case? Bonkers, but whatever. I'm more interested in how someone managed to pitch that movie.

Ok, so it's about this guy who's trying to find a bomber, who turns out to be a girl who turns into a guy and then fecks herself, and then has a baby, which is actually her/him, and also she/he is the bomber. Do we have a deal?

And have you seen Nightcrawler? I thought it was entertaining if some what hammy bollocks.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty good. Once it had set out it's stall it followed a predicatable path, but it was fun, and Jake was great. A better film than Gone Girl for sure. But possibly not Wild Things.

Have you seen Birdman? I thought it was a masterpeice, but I was admittedly in a very susceptible mood.

Yet to see Birdman. As for Nightcrawler Gyllenhaal's character was very two dimensional, almost as over the top as Panico's Montana and Ledger's Joker. But I did enjoy the film, I thought it worked better as dark satire than a commentary.

Yeah, I certainly saw it as such. I also thought Riz Ahmed was great. Not a showy performance, but considering he was playing American, and at least 10 years younger for some odd reason, I bought him completely.

I think you'll like Birdman, but it's potentially devisive. It's pretty poncy, and I disliked both Babel & 21 Grams for their uber self importantness, but this somehow avoids all his usual pretentious pitfalls with humour, and a heavy dose of undercutting. Norton almost steals it too, and I've never been a huge fan of Norton.

I watched Denzel Washington's film The Equalizer and it hilariously ridiculous but still fun at the same time. Total popcorn film. 6/10

I recall thinking Amores Perros was vastly overrated as well. I've not seen it for a decade but only one of the stories kept my interested. But yeah I'll give Birdman a try.

Still got to see Ida. Apparently, it's the tits.
