Gone Girl - Just finished. I think I liked it? I am in total agreement that the last 30 minutes is quite pointless. I kept on expecting something significant to happen even after reading the last 30minute reviews on here beforehand :lol:

I think I like it. Whether I'd watch it again, probably not. For a thriller, it was decent. I'd give it a 7.5/10.
 
The Master - So much better on a second watch, where you're not waiting for a more conventional plot, or a harder hitting look into scientology to appear. It's about the main characters, and the relationships they have, try, and fail to build. Pheonix, Hoffman and Adams are perfect, it looks and sounds incredible and there's enough mystery in the characters' motivations to sustain your attention for a number of viewings. I feel like I understand Freddie now, but the Master still baffles me...
What does he see in Freddie? A lost soul he can manipulate? A friend, a son, a pet? Someone who needs help that he can provide?
Did he actually mean it when he told Freddie that he's "the bravest boy that I know"?
He obviously believes he's doing good for the world, but is 'the cause' just a way to live a good life with power and wealth?
Was the scene in the cinema a dream? I didn't understand that part of the film.

Days of Being Wild - Second Wong Kar-Wai film I've seen (after Chungking Express), but I really couldn't get into this one. For the first hour I was just bored - especially hated the main character and couldn't understand the way everyone else in the film behaved around him. It got more interesting towards the end, but there wasn't enough there to invest me in the story, or any of the characters. I'm hoping it's down to his early films simply being less polished, because Chungking Express was close to perfection. In the Mood For Love next. 5/10

Only just watched Gone Girl this evening. Really enjoyed it. My overriding emotion though is, what the feck just happened.

Very good low budget sci fi film about time travel. A good lesson that a film doesn't need a big budget to keep you entertained throughout.
The film is from 2007 but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a Hollywood remake soon.

It's in the same style as Predestination. I like these kind of movies, although it takes more than one viewing to figure things out.

Utterly pointless convoluted drivel. Like Gone Girl, folk seem to enjoy films that have twists for twists' sake, forget plots, forget plausibility...as long as they appear gripping and complex.

Anyway, I'm going to watch Nightcrawler tomorrow - I suspect...well, I hope it'll be a tad better - at least no pointless paradoxes will be created I presume!

Dunno man, it just really kept me entertained throughout, that's how I rate films though tbh. I don't pay much attention to details.

I also really liked Gone Girl but not for any twists or whatnot. Didn't even know there really was a twist in this though? :confused:

It's all about the mood. I didn't think much of it the first time I watched it either tho.
 
Thor 2 - enjoyable film, pretty much your typical Marvel superhero adventure with some jokes and twists thrown in. A couple of points of confusion, namely how Loki survived, but I'm guessing that will be answered in the next film. The scenes on Asgard were terrific. Loki's an excellent character, Hiddlestone again did a great job portraying him as the menacing villain - 8/10.

Lego Movie - I was really looking forward to this film having heard a lot of positive stuff, but I was disappointed. It is overhyped and not as funny as I expected, especially towards the end when I began to lose interest. Some good moments, but overall not as good as I expected - 5/10.

Frozen - I thought I would hate this, but it's a very good film. Great visuals, good plot, excellent characters and a fun watch for all ages - 9/10.
 
Might watch Memento today. Anyone recommend it? Or any other crime/thrillers? Something like "The Bone Collector" which I really enjoyed.

It's been years since I watched Memento so can't remember it well enough to give proper reasons but I'd definitely recommend it. It's a fantastic film.

Watched Boyhood last night, for once I actually felt a film lived up to it's hype. Not flawless but a good, unique film.
 
The Interview:

It's an interesting one. I spent the first 15-20 minutes cringing between Franco's douchebag character and the accompanying expressions and mannerisms and Eminem's plastic face.

Once I'd overcome this hurdle and my brain had adjusted to Franco's character, it was actually a watchable film with the odd chucklesome moment if you're in to stupid/gross-out humour.

Totally average film, although the opening sequence might put a lot of people off.

I couldn't get into the Lego film at all. It was manic and I felt like I was watching a videogame. I turned it off when they were in the cloud/rainbow land bit.

Yeah, The Lego Movie is definitely for a type of person. I have quite a childish sense of humour, so I absolutely adored it :lol: I'm on pediatric placement right now, and I'm more child-like at times than the actual patients.
 
The Skeleton Twins Somewhat depressing subject matter but there are laughs to be had and the ending is surprisingly upbeat and satisfying. Brilliant performances from the 2 main actors. One of my favorites from 2014 in the end. 8/10

I'd definitely agree with that. Had plenty of flaws at times, although still excellent and with a well executed, unique concept.
 
Fury - Meh, supposedly the director wanted a greater level of 'realism' in this war film, didn't feel that way at all to me. I guess it had some good action scenes and decent performances (albeit with a load of unnecessary filler in between at times) but ultimately I never got the sort of realistic feeling of WWII that I got from plenty of better war films and shows, and it mostly just felt like the Hollywood film it was. 6/10

I thought it was a gritty, decent war film.

Some of the characters were a bit cliched and the climax was a bit over the top but I thought it had some very good scenes.

It was definitely gritty, I don't know, it's not a bad film, I just didn't really see it as much of an actual war film. More of an action/character film that's just set in WWII, as weird as that sounds. Like I said, I've seen plenty of better depictions of WWII so I guess my expectations are too high.

It does sound a bit weird, but I can see your point. I enjoyed it, flaws and all which includes Brad Pitt showing flashes of Aldo Raine.
 
The Equalizer - If you happen to own the condom franchise to an empty nunnery, Denzel Washington is your go to guy. His performance sells this ludicrous farrago, investing it with a gravitas the on-screen shenanigans in no way earn.

The movie begins low-key. Washington is an ordinary Joe, displaying signs of mortality - tightly cropped greying hair shown in close up - living in a modest apartment, and working in a huge superstore, where he carries things, and banters with his non-college educated workmates.

The film continues in this vein for about twenty minutes.

Then it steps aboard its magical flying saucer. The first stop is a room full of Eastern European type evildoers, bristling with weaponry. The unarmed hero enters, tries and abandons sweet reason, then takes out his stopwatch, and times himself while he slices and dices the whole lot in 30 seconds, or maybe 40. And that's just the beginning. By the time the final credits roll, Denzel has used a variety of garden tools and lethal household accessories to decimate an entire Russian crime syndicate, and finished off with a quick trip to Moscow for an electrifying encounter with the Big Boss.

It should be noted that all this mayhem is wrought without the use of firearms. Denzel gives the bad guys a fair chance.

So.. a movie which is not hamstrung by the limits of the possible, but chooses to embrace the impossible. Quite enjoyable, but bring a big pinch of salt.

I watched this the other night and had a similar reaction, no plot just an escalating set of circumstances, and it doesn't earn the relationship between Lerman and Pitt.
 
I started watching Locke yesterday, got about 10 minutes in and I just gave up on it. To be fair, I was quite distracted with other things but I was really struggling to get into it. I know the brief summary of the film, I'm going to spoiler it despite not really being a spoiler:
He's in a car for the whole film

I understand that concept and I don't mind it.

Do people actually recommend it because I'll no doubt give it a chance if people think it's worth the watch.

I watched it earlier today and wasn't particularly impressed. The performance by Tom Hardy is excellent but the film never really goes anywhere. I didn't dislike it, just found it very average.

Watch Nightcrawler, Vato. I enjoyed it.
 
I watched Enemy the other night. That shit was creepy as feck. Won't reveal too much about the plot because it's probably best to go in as blind as possible. Was amusing reading the common interpretation of what it was about afterwards with what was going on in my head at the time. Gylenhaal is knocking it out the park at the moment.

I thought he was a schizophreniac fruit that was leading a double life but after the long scenes together with the actor that looked exactly like him I wasn't sure anymore. Then in the end I thought it could have been right that he was a nutjob when we saw that big ass spider in his room. I really have no clue though, still enjoyed it. Gyllenhaal is a great actor.
