Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Toy Story 4

Weakest of the franchise by far but a strong outing nonetheless. We see the Toy Story family expanding further with new characters such as Forky and Gabby with her very creepy henchmen dummies. What this unfortunately means is that some of the original stalwarts are effectively reduced to bit part players....the gang are still all there though. Don't expect too much from Forky though. Bit of a disappointment, that's all I'll say.

The animation is more slicker and clearly benefiting from advancements in technology but what Toy Story has always done and done extremely well for that matter, is primarily focusing on a great story with strong values of friendship, courage, loyalty and love.

Toy Story 4 is no different but how many times can they realistically face the same types of peril before it gets too predictable and stale. It's hard to believe that Toy Story is 25 years old next year. There'll probably be some anniversary release next year or something but it's difficult to see where next they can go with Woody and the gang. They've had a great run though.

I'm giving this a 8/10.

Yeah I really enjoyed it as a film but felt like this was the biggest weakness - really weird to see a lot of the main characters there but basically doing nothing with, like, 4 or 5 lines throughout the film. Understandable with Potato Head due to Don Rickles' families request, but strange they didn't utilise Rex, Hamm etc to a greater degree. Thankfully the new supporting characters were entertaining in their own right though.

So they did a Matrix 3?

Every single one of your points I disagree strongly.

But opinions I guess.

Hey man, you can't just leave it at that. I thought the film was utter shite but if you thought it was great, I'd like to hear your take on it.

Possum
A disgraced puppeteer returns home and had to deal with his past trauma. Well that's the log line but in reality, it was about a man who walks around holding a duffle bag for 80 minutes and gets spanked by his uncle for 5 minutes. What a load of pretentious shite from the maker of Garth Maringy's Darkplace 1/10

Haha to be honest there's a thread about the film already. The people who also loved it have put thoughts similar to mine. But the reason I replied to your post is that every single one of your points replace bad with amazing and that was my opinion.

Ah fair enough. That's the beauty of film, so many perspectives on the same thing. For example, Wonder Woman gets a lot of hate but for me it's one of the best superhero films from Marvel/DC to date. And Infinity War was like 10x better than Endgame, which a lot of people rate as Marvel's crown jewel. But like you say that is just my opinion.

‘Beauty’ and ‘Marvel’... :nono:

This old watched Bumblebee and thought it was alright. She's good, he's good, Bee's good and it was fun at times. It follows the ET/The Iron Giant/Short Circuit formula dangerously close but it's a decent rendition. The action is quite good.

I watched this off the back of the Kubo connection. It hasn't made me want to brave the murky waters of the Bay installments, but if for some reason I had to recommend a brash action film to the youngs, then I'd go with this over much of the superheroes or previous Transformers stuff.

I would not bother with the Bay films, they are a very different kettle of fish to Bumblebee. Bumblebee is much superior and you can actually see what's happening in the action scenes.

I'll be honest, I played it back several times entirely for the nudity. But yeah, it was like a fever dream for him and he's pretending the next day it didn't happen. It was haunting and felt like the point there was no turning back from how far these people were going to push him. Wasn't it right before he ended up in the field with everyone going at it?

I remember when I did re-watch it I was surprised how many musical numbers were going on around him, I had completely forgotten that. It's almost like a weird musical where they are celebrating their paganism through song to rattle him and it builds up to that. Even Summerisle got in on the music.
The soundtrack is great- I actually listened to it for the first time in ages the other day. Funny you guys are talking about it.

The film's great- even the little touches like the weird potions in the shop.

Taken (2008)

I feel guilty for enjoying this.

7/10

Taken 2 (2012)

Why do I do this to myself?
*blubs*

4/10

I saw Rocketman today and was pleasantly surprised, really enjoyed it. I'm always a bit wary of biopics cos I feel they're a bit "paint by the numbers" exercises most of the time, and I like it when they try to do something a little different. Without being revolutionary, Dexter Fletcher puts together a vibrant film and incorporates the music in a clever way. The highs and lows of Elton John's career, the excesses and the abuse are well portrayed, and all the actors do a great job - hats off to Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell who are both very touching as John and Taupin. Much better than Bohemian Shitsody, God that was a rough watch.

Yeah, it’s everything Bohemian Rhapsody should’ve been, but was too cowardly to be. And Taron tears fecking stripes off Rami Malek’s perfunctory party piece impression.

Planning a movie binge this week covering the good, the bad and the ugly in 80s/90s sci-fi.

So far, considering:
Leviathan
Event Horizon
Lifeforce
Hardware
Dark City
Aliens
Brazil
Outland
The Fly
Fortress
Enemy Mine
The Lawnmower Man
Mimic
Split Second

Some I've never seen or only seen a couple of times many years ago. Want to narrow down to about 10 if possible. Any other suggestions??

Lifeforce is fecking brilliant. I saw that at the cinema and was practically wanking from the space vampiress walking about starkers. I think the effects are pretty damn good too.

Yeah Mathilda May was damn near perfect in that movie.:drool::drool: That one's definitely in my list for sure. :)

The Thing and Altered States.

Lifeforce is one of those “So bad it’s good” classics that is always referenced on things like RedLetterMedia and How Did This Get Made.... it’s bonkers, and was made at the coked out tail end of the Canon films era, and couldnt have gotten made at any other time, by any other studio... but the effects still definitely hold up, and it’s just about the perfect mix of a crazy terrible script with an actual proper budget to always be watchable.

Also ‘The Thing’ is an undoubted horror Masterpeice. Everyone should watch it at least once.

Also also, Chris Rock is not in the Fifth Element..

They Live

Terminator 1

Predator

Total Recall

Running Man

Starship Troopers.

Bonus - It was released in 1979 so doesn't really count but worth mentioning as it might the best Sci fo movie of all time - Stalker.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople NZ made comedy drama staring Sam Neil. Lots of belly laughs and more than a few heartfelt moments. Far and away my film of the year to date. You don't need to know more about it. Just watch it.9/10

Watched it again this weekend and it was just as great the second time around.

"What have I been doing with my life?"

Chris Tucker I guess

Dunno why I said Chris Rock when I was thinking of Tucker?? :wenger:

I saw They Live not so long ago with Rowdy Roddy Piper. Decent movie. Have watched all the Arnie's to death and Starship Troopers is just one of my Top 10 all time faves so they all get a bye. Need a few more obscure films that I haven't seen in years. Gonna add Slipstream to the list with Mark Hamill. Haven't seen that one in over 20 years. Want to see Freejack as well but can't find it anywhere. Will check Stalker out.

Like a Q&A sort of thing ? If so what were he's thoughts on the film ?

Ah I was wondering why there was no Arnie on your list but makes sense if you've already seen them.

It's not really obscure but no one has mentioned it yet - Akira.

And also maybe you've seen it after Brazil, 12 Monkeys

Will check Stalker out.
Yeah Stalker is brilliant. Very slow and well very Soviet but really a must watch.

Screamers - Peter Weller in an adaption of a Philip K. Dick story. Excellent 90's sci fi.
Universal Soldier
Demolition Man
Dark Angel - Dolph Lundgren film
Cyborg
Deep Rising

If I had to pick one I'd pick Screamers.

Nah, I was just referring to Piper being in the film. The aliens were really cool. Creepy but funny at the same time, especially when you see them going about their business. And of course you can never have too much of Meg Foster's eyes.

I started watching Screamers years ago. I just remember some guy in a desert and something coming out of the sand and slicing his leg. Lost interest after that and gave up. Will definitely give it another go though. Can't say I care for the others, especially Deep Rising.

It's very fun.

Add Runaway and Robocop

Robo is another firm entry in my all time Top 10 so not necessary but Runaway is a good shout. Very slick film with Tom Selleck and Gene Simmons. Loved his cool gadgets in this.
