Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Patient Zero
After an unprecedented global pandemic turns the majority of humankind into violent "Infected," a man gifted with the ability to speak the Infected's new language leads the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Boring, forgettable, boring, stupid story, boring and forgettable. But I like that they tried something new with zombies, just didn't work. However, anything with Natalie Dormer is excused as she's smokin' hot 3/10

Its aggressively mediocre and directionless and not worth yours or anyone else's time.

I disliked both Kingsman movies but did not hate them and can see why they work for some people, Robin Hood will not work for anybody who isn't a masochists.

Okay thanks

I have seen this , just not wrote a review.
I think your 3 is being kind, even with Dormer, worth 1-1.5 at best.

AN was really good for like the first 90 minutes but they hype up the villain to be some badass, but it ends up being a fat, old and bald Marlon Brando. Should have casted Pacino for the role.

I think that Heart of Darkness, the source of AN, has been superseded by McCarthy's Blood Meridian. Even without his violent behaviour, that novel's character Judge Holden is a far more chilling and thought-provoking villain than HoD's or AN's Kurtz; AN seems lightweight in comparison to both Meridian & HoD.

Sorry To Bother You - Crafty satire that got increasingly muddled as it went along, finally unable to resist going full on Adult Swim. Could have done with less magical and more realism, more Atlanta and less Gondry. I enjoyed the look of it though, the wardrobe and so forth. Spot on casting too.

Stan and Ollie.

So here's the thing, I'm not really any kind of Laurel and Hardy aficionado and when they did the comedy scenes in the first section I didn't laugh. What held my attention was the acting (Coogan is very good, so is Reilly) and their interaction - it tells a side to their story that I had no idea about. I'm assuming that it is more or less historically accurate, but if it isn't, that doesn't matter: it felt real enough.

Some of the other characters, who start off looking like cardboard cutouts seem 3D by the end. Some of the comedy sequences that didn't make me laugh at first sight, made me laugh when they come back in a different guise at the end. Which seems like a pretty impressive performance to me.

Deep Cover (1992)

As usual, another good 90s crime flick. It just amazes me how much better the dialogues are compared to today's crime flicks.

Finally watched into the Spider verse. I can see what all the fuss was about. Its a great movie, and it looked glorious in 3D, probably the best looking 3D movie i've seen since Avatar.

I recently re-read Heart of Darkness alongside Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth and found it a devastating condemnation of European violence; carried out under the equally brutal, split personalities of colonial exploitation and Enlightened thought. It resonates today just as it did during the Algerian War of Independence, just as it must have at the time it was written when Leopold had his blade in the guts of the Congo. And it will continue to do so, for as long as Western Values retain their bloody lustre.

I can agree about the Judge though; such a great construction, whereas I think of Kurtz as more allegory than character.

XXX: The Return of Xander Cage

That was fecking shite. I lasted about an hour and had to turn it off. It's not even brainless fun, it's just stupid. You can't take any of it seriously because it's so stupid and not even in a fun way. Complete waste of Tony Jaa as well from what I saw. It's just soulless nonsense that even manages to make action scenes seem boring.

One of the worst films I've seen in a while, it would have been the worst if I didn't have the misfortune of seeing The Predator.

1/10 And I'm only giving it 1 because it had Nina Dobrev.

You made it past the Neymar scene? I admire your effort

Roma - a perfect film in its craft but tripped my bullshit-o-meter big time in the third act with some emotionally manipulative plotting. Cleo is near mute and completely angelic, and Cuaron piles misery on her but doesn't give much insight into who she is. I have a heart as black as coal and I'm not surprised people love this film but didn't do it for me. It has some spectacular set-pieces and is well worth seeing at the cinema if possible.

You're right. Reading the above caused me to reconsider.

That's good to hear. It certainly seems like an interesting production. I watched L&H in Swiss Miss a few nights ago and the famous rope bridge scene had me howling with laughter to the point of physical discomfort.

Escape Room - Shite/ 10

Shite movie as can be expected..but decent... something to check out if you have a couple of hours to kill...along the same vein as Saw....they are certainly trying to do the same with sequels.

Brilliant short video.

You might have already seen this but I come across this great silent Japensse horror movie

Yeah, it's great. Difficult to follow but conjured up some striking imagery. Was lost for about 40 years until the director found a copy in his garden shed.

The ultimate lost silent story:

The Passion of Joan of Arc

The original version was lost for decades after a fire destroyed the master negative and only variations of Dreyer's second version were available. In 1981, an employee of the Dikemark Hospital mental institution in Oslo found several film canisters in a janitor's closet that were labeled as being The Passion of Joan of Arc. The canisters were sent to the Norwegian Film Institute where they were first stored for three years until finally being examined. It was then discovered that they were Dreyer's original cut prior to government or church censorship. There were never any records of the film being shipped to Oslo, but film historians believe that the then director of the institution may have requested a special copy since he was also a published historian.

Is that the new one? There are a few Escape Rooms as I found out the other day when I watched the wrong one on accident.

I'm still holding out in the hope that someone will trip over Murnau's 4 Devils.
For real. No footage of Janet Gaynor has any business being lost.

Tau
A woman is held captive by a scientist in a futuristic smart house, and hopes to escape by reasoning with the Artificial Intelligence that controls the house. I want my sci-fi's to be smart, which this wasn't. There were some cool set pieces and some decent plot points here and there but overall, just felt like a film made by someone who did little to no research on the subject matter 4.5/10

The Super

A man becomes the superintendent of a large New York City apartment building where people mysteriously go missing. Wow. Thought it would be good as it was filmed quite nicely, didn't feel run-of-the-mill but in reality, that's exactly what it was. No suspense, no shock, just boring, slow, flat and idiotic movie where characters cant help but make stupid decisions. Val Kilmer was great in it though! Avoid 2/10

Can anyone suggest any good mafia films? I've watched all the famous ones like Godfather, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco etc etc

Don't know about films that will compare to those, but if you want some quality mafia stuff then watch Gomorrah the series, some of the best mafia stuff ever made. If you've seen that then try Romanzo Criminale.

King of New York

Well it's kinda Mafia...

Casino , one of my favourites

Bohemian Rhapsody
No idea why this movie is getting so much flam. It's awesome and Rami Malek deserves an Oscar for it. Made me rediscover my love for Queen.
Just watched it last night. Loved it too.
Used to love Queen back in the day and hearing their songs brought the memories flooding back.

Burning - Best film of 2018 I've seen so far. A slow-burning exploration of classism (the nouveau riche, rural vs metropolitan) and misogynism in contemporary South Korea. The story took inspiration from two short stories titled 'Barn Burning', one by Haruki Murakami and the other by William Faulkner. The three leads were great and stuff like the use of Miles Davis' Elevator to the Gallows score in the film's famous sceen recalled some of the ol' French ménage à trois films.

Priest
A priest disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece. Looked really nice, great art design, some cool action scenes and edited well but overall it was a flat, boring, soulless film 4/10

Sounds fecking riveting, mate. I've waited for a movie that fully explores this exact subject.
